Chris and Ann run this very nice place in the direct vicinity (15 mins) from Cognac. A most friendly couple of British origin who know all the inns and outs of the area. Rooms furnished with local antiques, breakfast with fresh croissants, they do everything possible to make your stay as welcome as possible. Downstairs is a kitchen which is not meant for making your own meals but guests can use it for making a cup of tea or coffee and there are cups, glasses, plates and even a microwave. Very handy indeed. Large garden with several tables and chairs. Very quiet neighborhood. Cognac, Saintes and (further away) La Rochelle are wonderful places to visit.

We really liked this place and were gutted we couldn’t stay longer. The owners were really friendly and gave us lots of recommendations of things to do in the area. Our room was of high quality, very clean and pretty decor and comfortable bed. Breakfast was delicious! We would highly recommend this place and will be back ourselves!

This area of southwest France is new to us and Demeure du Chapitre, a bed and breakfast in a village just outside Cognac, was a great choice. As my husband makes wine, we were keen to do a vineyard tour. I could not find what I wanted online before our holiday (too expensive, too complicated….). Fortunately, I mentioned this to our hosts, Ann and Chris, when I booked our room, and Ann suggested a tour of a local organic (very important to us) vineyard, and she also mentioned a tour of a bigger Cognac house and Chateau. Both tours were fabulous and in English. This was all down to Ann’s help in booking them (Ann and Chris speak French and ours is very limited). We booked a ‘table d’hôte’ dinner (be aware, Ann and Chris offer this service twice a week and you must book in advance). It was what I think of as ‘proper’ table d’hôte – everyone sits down to the same meal. So, there is no choice, but Ann asked us beforehand if there was anything we can’t or don’t eat and adapted the menu accordingly. We all sat at the big dining table. It was a lovely evening, memorable for the great food, lively conversation and the chance to benefit from Chris’s knowledge of Cognac and the surrounding area. Breakfast, served at the same table, was equally good. On a practical note, there is plenty of parking and Chris helped carry our bags. Our pretty, spacious bedroom had everything we could need, including a very comfy, good quality mattress, so I slept well despite my bad back. If you want a welcoming place to stay, this is the place to book. I review a lot of places as we travel a lot and I do give 1-star reviews for the bad places and 5 stars to the good ones. I have never before wanted to give more than 5 stars- and I can’t- but Demeure du Chapitre is the place for that if I could!

Upon arrival we were impressed by the warmth of our greeting from Chris and Ann. Our room was tastefully decorated and well appointed with slippers, fluffy thick white towels and a wonderfully comfortable bed. There is a large living/dining area with plenty of seating where we were served first class three course evening meals that were on a par with good quality resturant food. Our hosts were very knowledgable about the local area and gave us some great tips for sightseeing, following this we had some lovely days out walking into Cognac and touring the famous distilleries. We also drove to the coast, Louzac is ideally placed to visit the ill de rey, La Rochelle, and Bordeaux. The surrounding area is great for cycling and walking with many historic towns and villages such as Pons and Saint nearby. A huge thank you to Chris and Ann, for helping make our first visit to Cognac a special one, we will return next year and continue our exploration of this beautiful area of France.
