What a delightful stay! Wilson (the Host) was very helpful and brought us firewood and some Spaghetti and sauce for dinner. We had planned on going out but decided to stay in and enjoyed a glass of wine by the woodstove just enjoying the space.
As I have some mobility issues, my daughter took the upstairs bedroom and I had the downstairs one.
We found both beds very comfortable.
We also enjoyed the 'formal' table and later played some table games provided in the tv/sitting room.
Wilson explained that the deck leading off of the sitting room was a work in progress and they are working on having it replace. Since we were only staying one night, it was not an issue to us.
Reading the log books, you will notice there are a few references to 'ghostly' encounters. That didn't bother me but my daughter was a little uneasy with it. I also had an experience but nothing really unsettling.
One other thing of note, Wilson Spaghetti was AMAZING! I am Not a fan of black olives, I like my spaghetti sauce with meat in it, and I couldn't find any salt n pepper, however... once we tasted it we were amazed at how delicious it was!! It honestly was THE BEST spaghetti sauce I've ever had and didn't need any salt or pepper.
All in all our stay was really good and memorable. My daughter, who lives in Australia said she will definitely go back with friends.
While there are some small things you may notice that are not fully restored, and it is not a 5 star place, the uniqueness of this place is well worth the stay, and to have a dinner included!
I definitely would recommend giving it a try if you are planning on being in the area.

We stayed one night here and had the best time. Every bit of the place feels special, warm and calm. Friendly host made us feel welcome. Homemade pasta sauce, pasta and a bottle of red was a delicious surprise. Had a great time cooking it listening to Bob Dylan on the stereo in the kitchen. It was very clean and the location is great. In the morning, it's a short walk to a cafe and then round 10 mins drive to get to the Binna Burra hikes. Highly recommend. Staying here is an experience, not just accommodation, as the place is so interesting with all the books and trinkets to explore. We will be back again for certain.

Four of us and our fur baby stayed at Old Saint Johns Church. Wilson met us and greeted us with a bottle of red wine and in the fridge there was pasta and a lovely home made pasta sauce that was still warm. He apologised for the deck being out of action as its being replaced and had set up the fireplace for us , returning later with a big bag of firewood. Its such a unique place to stay , so much character and charm and interesting things to look at. Its the oldest Church on the mountain and you can read the history in one of the many books you will find there. Yes , its OLD , so things do go bump and creak in the night , but we were cosy and the beds were comfy. There is lots to look at and reading the many guest books was very interesting ! Lots of positive reviews . We had a great unique stay here and wish it had been longer.. great memories made !

I have always wanted to live/stay in an old church and when I saw Old Saint John's we booked it for this trip. The location was great for us as we have family there and we really appreciated the provisions left by the owners and the small flower arrangements in the rooms (which included gardenias, one of my favourites), was a lovely touch. However, we were disappointed to find the property in need of a really good clean and maintenance. The bathroom ceiling is mouldy, the tiles in the shower are coming off the wall, the shower head drips and there is a hole in the outdoor deck over which the table has been placed and makes it a tight squeeze to get out the door. We did sit outside and noticed that the gutters were full of leaves and twigs and the rainwater tank was also covered and this would not be good for the quality of the water. On our first morning when I went to cook the eggs provided the pan was encrusted with food from a previous guest and the scrubbing brush was so worn I could not get the food off and had to use the one clean saucepan I could find. That day I bought a scourer so I could clean the pots in order to use them to cook the pasta provided. I would really love to give a better rating as this could truly be an amazing place with a bit of TLC and care. Given it cost us $765 for 3 nights we did expect a better standard of property.

We stayed one night at the church it was on our bucket list.

We were expecting a 5 star luxury converted church with a deck and lovely gardens.

Massive disappointment.

The front was really run down and dirty.
The owner said the deck was rotten and has to be demolished. The front steps looked to be very dangerous

When stepping inside We should have just left. The place was mouldy above windows and ceilings. Air cond was black would not use. Cracked windows and doors. Frames 0n windows had rot.
Bathroom needs complete Reno.

It was filthy and dusty beds uncomfortable

The musty smell hits you when you walk in no ventilation

We have stayed at a lot of places and this appeared to be such neglect of a beautiful bit of history.

We did lock ourselves out and the owners came across quickly as they live across the road.

Stayed at Old St Johns for 3 nights after returning from overseas holiday. This is the perfect place to do nothing, before getting back to work etc. We were able to take our dog, who was welcommed inside. Our daugter and partner also came for the weekend. St Johns is furnished just as an old church should be - heavy wooden tables, candles and 4 poster beds as well as lounge to sink into in front of the fire. What was super special are all the extra touches - pot of pasta and sauce on the stove for dinner, fridge with cheese and crackers etc along with fruit and veges (even a whole pumpkin which I made into soup on day 2). there were cd's playing, dvd's, books and stacks of board games in the cupboards. There were plenty of fluffy towels and bathrobes in the bathroom. Church can sleep 6 (2 in loft, 2 in bedroom and 2 on foldout sofa bed + of course your dog.) There is nothing to do here, Cunungra about 20 mins drive for xtra supplies - but we didn't want to do anything. Overall an enjoyable stay for the whole family.

This accommodation is nothing but amazing. I brought my husband here for his 29th birthday and boy was he impressed! The moment we walked into the church it took our breath away. The airconditioner had already been turned on and soft classical music was playing. Fresh fruit, flowers, wine and chocolates and been left for us from the owners as well as an authentic home cooked italian meal that was given at no extra charge! The owners came around to say hello and they were just as lovely as the accommodation and very welcoming. Oh and did I mention that the accommodation is pet friendly!! So we were able to bring our dog along with us to enjoy this peaceful paradise. Needless to say we left feeling relaxed and rejuvenated :-) we have recommended this accommodation to everyone we know and will definetley be back again soon.

We were looking for a place to get away from it all and re-connect with each other, Old St John's filled the brief perfectly.

It is a lovely private location and the hosts are obviously aware there isn't much to do in the region as they provide a number of board games, chess set, backgammon set, playing cards, DVDs, CDs and books to keep your occupied. A home cooked pasta sauce waits to be re-heated on the stove upon arrival, along with a fridge already filled with dips, crackers, fruit, chocolate and milk.

The decor and furnishings are lovely and very comfortable. There are little nic-nacs all around to reinforce the church vibe. Across the road is the owners residence in case you need anything but we didn't for the whole weekend. There is also a magnificent view of a valley and the mountains from their property.

It is located fairly close to the road but there isn't much traffic and both bedrooms are located at the back of the church so this wasn't a distraction. There is a rooster who is active in the morning.

This place is next level dirty. I'm not sure whether the good reviews are from years ago and were old owners but I will never go back. Everything is mouldy including the fridge, freezer. There are rat traps and droppings in the kitchen and cobwebs everywhere. You get a Tupperware container of slops as the 'Free meal upon arrival'. I felt dirty and creeped out the entire time. Glass doors had massive cracks, windows wouldn't close and the smell was like it had not been cleaned in years. Yuck....don't even want to give one star but have to rate for review.

Yes this accommadation is quaint and historical being an old church. Yes it is set in the beautiful area of Beechmont.. that is where it ends. Most of the pictures most be from a few years ago when it was in a better state of repair and maintainence.
Outside yard is an overgrown mess. Front steps rotted dangerous health risk. Back steps equally unsafe and the deck totally rotten in places with a major concern to walk or be sitting on in places. Gutters full of leaves and rotten tree debris. Water from tanks discolored and then we ran out of water on third morning!!
Inside kitchen, lounge and upper bedroom quaint. However only small amount wood provided for fire. Fireplace glass in door loose.. dangerous. Front glass doors to church huge cracks thru both doors-not a good look.
Main air conditioner absolutely filthy in need of a service and clean of filter.
Kitchen needed more glasses, only one small saucepan, no breadboard or cutting board. No cloth for the sink. Oven door wouldn't close properly.. we put a bungy cord around it so we could cook our dinner. Wilson said they were looking for a second hand replacement stove. Well it needed to to work and there is not much available in food places up there.
2nd bedroom freezing no heater provided. Everything dusty. Linen on bed musty and doona stained.
3rd bedroom, a joke.. tired old sofa bed lounge with a dirty sheet on it. The under mattress looked like mice had been chewing on it, dirty with holes.. had to ask for sheets. No pillows., luckily we had bought a couple with us. I wouldn't be surprised if there had been mice as they had mice traps set everywhere throughout the church.
The towels provided were old and musty. One had brown stains on it. We used washer/drier which took hours to wash and partial dry the towels. The bathroom was tiny and crowded with the washer drier being in there. Shower mouldy. It had great hot water until we ran out of water.
Overall the place needed a deep clean, alot of maintenance needs to be done, deck steps dangerous .. A rip off at $240 a night. Totally spoilt our weekend away.. renters beware.
