I travel a LOT! So I have become a bit of a hotel/resort snob. I only fly first class and only stay at five star facilities. I say that to qualify my review because there is a different standard of expectations for people who travel often vs. those who do not. And you’re never sure what that experience level is when reading reviews. When our car service first pulled into the circular driveway at the hotel’s main entrance, on a rainy day, I gave my husband some serious side-eye. At a glance this was NOT the type of “luxe” resort we were accustomed to. This was a surprise birthday getaway. So I was like “why for heavens sake would you bring me HERE?” Even after the golf cart whisked us to our bungalow I wasn’t convinced. The decor to the rooms are a bit dated and everything is heavy dark wood. Even the terrace furniture. I’m not a fan of dark furniture. But when I woke up the next morning to the sun shining through our terrace window and saw the unobstructed views of the sparkling ocean waters (we stayed in Bungalow 1604) I began to change my mind about the place! We could walk from our bungalow about 40 steps (I counted) thru the shallow water to the pristine WHITE flawlessly sandy beach. I’ve never seen sand this fine before. It has the texture of brown sugar — soft and incredibly fine. The service for the cabana was flawless. Daisy waited on us each day and her service and personality were both outstanding. It was the food and our Butler KAREN, however, who totally won me over. The food is INCREDIBLE at each of the restaurants and room service food is fantastic as well. I am still feening for the grilled salmon and asparagus risotto you get from the room service dinner menu. I gained 5 pounds in spite of the limited portion sizes for all food, so be careful. They are great at customizing your orders. Our Butler, Karen, deserves a paragraph of her own. I’ve never seen a more enthusiastic, consistently bubbly and service committed person outside of a Ritz or Four Seasons or St. Regis property where personnel are trained for excellence. Karen could put some of those service professionals to shame! She was non-stop service helping my husband plan a couple of miniature birthday surprises for me. She started our day each morning with a bright and cheery sing-songy greeting of “Hola!!” and smiled until she left us at six in the evening. Karen was the gift I needed for my birthday! She seamlessly met all of our needs. It’s because of Karen I would return to the bungalows. What the lodging lacks in luxe and plush posh Karen more than made up for with her service. The outdoor showers are a great feature as well. The activities company Lamos responsible for providing off grounds activities was severely lacking when it came to providing up-leveled experiences. We were on our own for example in finding a quality yacht experience during our stay. It’s those little attention to details that prevent me from giving the resort the highest rating. If you want to play in the big league resort space you have to know what those types of travelers want and this is where I felt the resort fell short along with the limited “posh” feel of the property overall.

My husband I travelled to the Palafitos for my 40th birthday and this place exceeded my expectations. Our butlers Aldo and Samantha were there for our every need and took very good care of us. They took care of all the bookings for us and were always checking in to see if there was anything we needed. Samantha set the mood for romance by filling our jacuzzi tub with bubbles and rose petals without us even asking. The Palafitos overwater restaurant was among the best dining we have ever had and the staff was attentive at all times. Manuel went above and beyond to make a special evening for my birthday. The beach and the private Palafitos beach area was perfect and we were well attended by the beach butler , Daisy, and the bartender . The bungalows themselves are gorgeous and made for an instant relaxing experience, including an outdoor shower, jetted tub , glass floors, double sinks, private balcony , pool, and lounge deck. You will see plenty of fish and love the privacy and intimacy of the bungalow. The property itself is immaculately maintained and had a beautiful orchid garden, pools, loungers, couches and daybeds. Breakfast served on your deck at your time of choosing was an awesome experience as well. This was the best trip I have ever had and we cannot wait to go back. It’s worth every penny and will be a tip you’ll never forget. It was truly a dream come true, we have never felt more pampered. Thank you so much to all of the staff!

We stayed at Dorado Maroma Palafitos for a few days. First, we were in the presidential Villa because the overwater bungalows were sold out and then we moved to the Palafitos overwater bungalows when they were available. I should first state that our stay in the presidential villa was great! We had no problems there or with the Dorado Maroma staff. However, the palafitos overwater bungalow experience was awful. We were checked into the bungalows during construction and our villa didn't even have a deck. So we paid full price for a bungalow without the ability to access the ocean(which is the major draw)! On top of this, we were told construction would be ending as we checked in, but they worked two additional hours. So instead of a beautiful ocean view underneath and outside our room, we had a view of about 15 construction workers who were trying to piece the decks together. After we told the concierge about this, Pilar, she said that they would offer us a benefit(which never happened even after e-mailing and calling multiple times). On top of this, it took an additional hour and a half for our luggage to be delivered to our room. At that rate, we would've rather just handled our luggage ourselves(which I asked to do and they refused saying they would deliver it with no trouble). I even called and asked if I could come get the luggage and take it myself. They said it would be there within minutes, but we had to wait longer. After all this trouble, Pilar promised us a voucher for a reduced price stay upon return. Get this...Palafitos even made myself and my wife sign a waiver saying we wouldn't hold them responsible for the sub-par experience and construction if they gave us the voucher. So we signed and were told our voucher would be e-mailed to us. This was the only reason I didn't leave a scathing review in the first place. But then it gets worse. We have now e-mailed them and called them multiple times to no response. So we basically signed a waiver saying we couldn't hold them responsible for the construction of our room and we didn't get any sort of compensation or voucher in return. To me, it seems like they only treat their members well. We have stayed in luxury resorts all over the world(Santorini, Amalfi Coast, Hawaii, Japan, Australia, etc.) and have never experienced something this terrible. We have also been to Cancun many times and to other parts of Mexico. Our stays at the Nizuc, the Rosewood, and Thompson Hotels across Cancun, Cabo, and Zihuatanejo were one-thousand times better. Plus the food at all those locations are much better! Do yourself a favor and stay anywhere else but here. If you really want the draw of an overwater bungalow, stay at the ones in Jamaica or just go to Bora Bora or the Maldives. Even at a discount from those place, Palafitos overwater bungalows are NOT worth the price!!! I'd rather spend thousands more to have a good experience at another location. We will absolutely NEVER return to this hotel. Oh! And the restaurant at palafitos made my wife sick the last night we stayed there! She is emetophobic, so the sickness was just the icing on the terrible cake. Please stay elsewhere. Better food, views, and service can be found elsewhere at a similar price! My wife is also an influencer that has over 1.3 million followers between TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook. We really thought about her leaving a scathing review to all her followers so that this resort could own up to their promises from a viral video, but we decided we would take the high road and just leave poor reviews. TLDR: Food made wife sick. Construction ruined vacation. Promised voucher we never received. Made to sign a waiver based on construction. Awful experience and will not return. Go elsewhere instead!

My husband and our best friends stayed at the gorgeous Palafitos to celebrate turning 50 (mine was during our stay). We could not have been happier with our choice of destination. The Palafitos were heavenly and the service was fantastic. Our butlers Janet and Alex went above and beyond to make our stay special. We spend our afternoons on the beautiful beach and had the pleasure of fantastic service from both Daisy (beach butler extraordinaire) and Luis (bartender) daily. Daisy served us picnic lunch on the beach daily and Luis kept us in delicious drinks all day. Everyone was so friendly and helpful, especially with plans on my birthday. The food was fantastic everywhere we ate (I have not found this at other resorts). Standout service was provided by Janet, Daisy and Luis and they truly made this the most wonderful 50th I could imagine. We will be back next year! You can’t go wrong with the gorgeous rooms, phenomenal service, and gourmet food. Thank you for a memorable stay. Dreaming of our return trip will help get us through this winter!

We travelled to Palafitos Bungalows for our honeymoon in November. From the moment we arrived, we received 5 star service. Nothing is too much for the team, Alex and Mauricio, our private butlers, looked after us day and night. We had a slight issue with some water leakage in our first Bungalow and they immediately moved us the next morning to another vacant bungalow which highlighted their dedication to guests having the best experience possible. We experienced bad weather during our stay and they were always on hand with a buggy to drive us to a restaurant or bar or would just come by at the bungalow to ask how we doing, update on what restaurants we could visit or just stay for a chat talking about the resort. They were incredibly kind, funny, knowledgeable and had incredible personalities. They are an absolute credit to the resort and they made a massive difference to our stay throughout. The food in the Palafitos over water restaurant was some of the most delicious food we have ever had. Everyday we were treated to fresh seafood, juicy steak and wonderful cocktails and all served by the incredible staff there that always had time for a chat and a joke and just made the daily experience such a wonderful event. Daisy looked after us on the beach, providing us with daily beach picnics and when the rains came ensured our picnic was delivered to our room and nothing was ever too much trouble. Her smile and lovely nature was a daily joy to behold and many other people said the same as us. We enjoyed the reggae music night at Ricks Bar and also the Mexican night – the Mariachi band is not to be missed! We also had the most incredible spa experience – the hydrotherapy experience is the best we have ever had. We had a couple massage which left us floating on air! Words can not really describe what an incredible place this is but what really made it a 10/10 was the staff – simply the best we’ve had the pleasure to meet. Thank you for the wonderful experience, we hope to return! Glenn & Clare Jackson
