Matapalo is a little off the beaten track. But it's worth 3 hour drive from SJO airport. We used Daytrip, a private transport to get there. Rolando was our driver. He was exceptional, teaching us a lot about Costa Rica, especially our Matapalo destination. We got to ask a lot of questions along the way, instead of stressing out about the drive. Once we arrived at Mi Vida Lodge, we both knew it was the haven we were looking for. It's a small hotel of 5 guest rooms. Situated at the edge of the jungle, we had a leisurely 4 minute walk from our room to the warm Pacific Ocean. We were welcomed with open arms by Anya and Frederico, hosts worthy of their warm and sincere reputation. The strong Pacific waves crash through the night, inviting us to the beach every morning. We really enjoyed being on a vast beach, seemingly by ourselves. The mist rose above mountains in the distance, and our chairs rested in the black sand. What a gift to be in this place. In February, the water was invitingly warm. We loved walking the peaceful beach very early, and even swim then as well. The water was so soothing and not cold at all. The ocean and jungle will tell you when to get up. Our deluxe double room was ample size with great air conditioning. The room safe worked easily. We used American dollars for our stay, and our king sized bed was quite comfortable. The gift of this natural setting also requires ecological mindedness. As in many beach areas, toilet tissue must be disposed of in the container provided, not flushed. Our room was well maintained and cleaned every day. The grounds, especially the outdoor living room, were lush and well kept. Beyond all of this...we felt well cared for. Each day the bed was always freshly made. The flowers, and towel art were lovely. In my opinion, this is a truly wonderful place to comfortably, and affordably, return to nature and peace of mind. The hotel owners are natural stars. Anya served us a fine breakfast each morning, and easily arranged a local kayak tour. She is a warm and most gracious host, as is her counterpart Frederico. Frederico taxied us to nearby restaurants and Quepos as we had no car. Smiles and laughter were always abundant. As their previous guests have truly said, Anya and Frederico are pleasant, and caring beyond check-in. It's obvious they are happy to inspire the Pura Vida life in their magical nest. You will find more good food and a convenience market within a 5 minute walk from the hotel. We will gladly return again.

Great place in great location. Matapalo is a very quiet place and it is perfect as a base to visit Dominical, Uvita or Manuel Antonio. The sandy beach is only a few metres away and is great for a walk in the morning or to sit down in the evening to watch the sunset. The rooms are spotless and very comfortable. Breakfast is good and the attention of Anya, the owner, excellent: Nothing is a problem for her. We'll come back.

CASH ONLY. They claim their machine "is broken" but Visa told me otherwise. They said they would work with us, but they did not, They make you drive 35km to the town of Dominical and get ATM cash and they actually threatened to call the policia on me if I did not. There are many places along the coast that are better maintained. You'll get more bag for your money anywhere else. 14 days in costa rica and this was the only HASSLE.

At the check out, the owner told us that we cannot pay with credit card, it was cash only. Even with the reservation saying those payment methods were available. There are not. The credit card machine is conveniently "broken", for good, I suppose. We did not have that amount of money, so we had to go 16km to atm to withdraw it. And 16 km again to check out. Plus the withdrawal costed us 7000 colones (more than 10 euros). It's not okay that those costs are supported exclusively by the client. She should have informed us of the "inconvenience" at the check in so we use one of our previous deslocations to withdraw the money and get prepared. The place is very close to the beach, there is no pool but there is no need (for us, at least, the beach is always the choice). The breakfast is fine, although we have experienced much better in CR (with pancakes and some sweet options - here they have only bread, scrumbled eggs and tradicional costa rica's breakfast). The place is beautiful and the staff was kind and helpful. But it doesn't worth 130 dolares for night. Definitely too expensive for what they offer.

This is a wonderful small personal hotel with beautifully appointed rooms, with air conditioning, wonderful landscaping within steps to the beach. Even better the meals, and the service. The hotel owner Anja is very accommodating as is Flori who was our main person while we were there. There is a convenience store within walking distance that is open until about 9. There's also a bus that goes into San Jose not far away.
