Hotel El Convento, nestled in the heart of Old San Juan, earns high marks for cleanliness and a prime location favored by guests for its proximity to local attractions. While the hotel's historic charm and complimentary amenities like the wine and cheese hour are celebrated, reviews on the rooms are mixed, with some guests finding them less luxurious than expected and occasionally noisy.
The attentive service provided by the staff is frequently commended, yet some travelers question the value, feeling the experience does not justify the cost.

Hotel's Favourite
My husband and I had the great fortune to stay at El Convento, in the historic old town in San Juan. We were drawn to this historic building and its’s position in old town. A perfect location to walk to forts, art galleries, restaurants, shops and our favourite Anita’s ice cream and sorbeto shoppe.
All staff were friendly, helpful from check in to check out. We had the opportunity to have a number of meals in the restaurant which is a lovely oasis. I have allergies and they were most accommodating. I would like to give a special thanks to Andrea, Indira, Stephanie and Jesus as they are not only great representatives for El Convento but really took care of all guests and especially helped me feel safe with regards to my food allergies.
After all that Puerto Rico has had to do after the massive hurricane seven years ago, I am amazed by the people and their strength to move forward.
We will treasure the memories. Gracias.

We really enjoyed our 3 night stay in San Juan, prior to our cruise departure. Largely because we booked a charming old world hotel called El Convento.
The rooms were elegant and soundproofed and air conditioned. The center courtyard was large and comfy and had lots of umbrellas for rain and sun protection, plus a lovely resident cat!
We had several meals there and were impressed with the quality and service.
The hotel offers a nightly wine and cheese hour at their sister hotel, which was a short walk away. It was lovely and Henry( the GM) checked in and chatted with guests regularly.
The hotel kindly left a bottle of wine and glasses for my birthday, gave us bottled water and provided umbrellas. There were 2 weddings and a photo shoot while we were there. A lovely hotel!
Lots of shops along the cobbled streets, historical sites easy to walk to.

We decided to visit Old San Juan for a Christmas family vacation and this hotel and the staff did not disappoint. The bell hops were all super attentive and just nice people. They were all quick to help with a restaurant recommendation or calling a taxi or just helping with bags. The front desk was also great especially want to say how great Griseliz and Adioha were upon checkout. The bartenders were all super cool too.
As for the hotel the best part is how you feel like you’re transported into old San Juan of 200 years ago. From the architecture, to the decor, to the surrounding square and cathedral it’s amazing how you feel like you go back in time. The location of the hotel is perfect as it gets you away from the cruise ship frenzy and closer to the restaurants that make Old San Juan special.
We took advantage of the hotel partnership with the Marriott on the Isla Verde beach. This was a nice feature but it also made us appreciate El Convento that much more.
There’s more I could say but just trust me that staying at this hotel will make your trip to Old San Juan memorable.

Review of Hotel El Convento, Old San Juan, Puerto Rico
Hotel El Convento has a reputation for luxury, but my recent stay left much to be desired. For the price, I expected well-maintained systems and a comfortable experience—neither of which was delivered.
Cons:
• Unreliable Wi-Fi: The Wi-Fi was painfully slow and dropped connection frequently. Additionally, the network was unsecured.
• Tiny Bathroom: The bathroom was cramped and not what I’d expect in a "luxury" room.
• Empty Amenities: The body wash and shampoo dispensers were empty upon arrival,
• HVAC Issues: The climate control in the room was abysmal. Upon arrival, the room was an icy 65 degrees. Opening windows and the door to warm it up led to walls and floors drenched in condensation due to the humidity. Attempting to turn on the heat made the air conditioning run instead. Ultimately, we had to turn the system off entirely and manually toggle between warm-up periods with no system and short bursts of AC to cool down when it got too warm.
Pros:
• Prime Location: The hotel is perfectly situated in the heart of Old San Juan, making it easy to explore the area.
• Friendly Staff: The staff was courteous and welcoming.
• Free Bottled Water: A nice touch, though not enough to outweigh the negatives.
Verdict:
While the location and friendly service are positives, the lack of functional systems, empty amenities, and significant HVAC issues make it hard to recommend Hotel El Convento. At these prices, the experience should be seamless, and it simply wasn’t. I would not stay here again unless significant improvements are made.

Excellent location but extremely noisy with service issues. The location in old San Juan can’t be beat, and the hotel has great bones. However, our experience was heavily marred by loud noise throughout the night from their wedding venue and guests enjoying the pool area adjoining our room at all hours. Service was also an issue with incredibly slow service in the dining room and lack of assistance in other areas typically expected at this price point (for instance, we didn’t see a valet upon arrival or bell staff to help with bags). Our queen vista room was fine, but not exactly decorated in a historical or luxurious manner, especially at the high price point we paid. We also had some mystery charges posted to our credit card after departure, which upon our inquiry, were promptly removed. Basically, we loved the location and historical aspect of the hotel, but the hotel fell short in terms of what typically offered at luxury hotels.

I had high hopes for this property, given the reviews I read and its location and pictures. Location cannot be beat. You are very central to everything in Old Town. The property’s public spaces are very nice to sometimes breathtaking. It is an old convent at its heart and much of the structure and architecture is maintained. It is beautiful. The rooms (we were on the second floor) were large and, although not luxury, nicely furnished. Everything was reasonably refreshed and new. Linens were great. Towels (when you got them) were ok. All the expected consumables and such were provided.
What was unsatisfactory for my $400+ a day stay was the complete lack of service skill, and annoyingly, intermittent internet and phones. The first two days we could not get a second washcloth from either the housekeeping staff or via calls to the front desk (who encouraged us to call for anything, several times.) Eventually, we were able to liberate one from a maid’s cart so the second of us could body wash that day. But we dared not drop those or our towels, as those, apparently were not to be replaced. Take that back, the first day there, maid service never showed up, even though we were out of the room from before 0900 to past 330pm. The only time we ever got full maid service was on the next to last day. The internet dropped out at least twice and day and required someone’s action to resolve it – that meant a call to the front desk. That worked, usually, unless, as happened on the 3rd day there after we lost power for a half hour or so, the phones stopped working. Dead phones was a common theme the remainder of the stay. Once you went to the front desk to beg resolution, your success was maybe 50-50. But you had to try. The final indignity was upon leaving, even though we said we would Uber, the staff insisted on calling a cab. The cab was 15 minutes later arriving, and twice the price, to get to the airport as the Uber.

Good Morning Jay Boy, Thank you for staying with us. I am glad you enjoyed our property and its location in the heart of Old San Juan. Your experience is not the norm at our hotel. From your comments, I gather you stayed right before the fiestas. During that week, traffic into Old San Juan is restricted on some days, which is why our staff probably recommended taxi service. For example, on Thursday I took an Uber to work. It left me a 15-minute walk from the hotel, because they were not allowed into Old Town due to preparations for the festivities. On one day of that week, our WIFI service provider had difficulties. Thankfully, they responded rather quickly to correct the situation. Our WIFI network was upgraded two months ago and has been working very well. The hotel has an electric generator that powers the entire property. I will share your comments about the housekeeping service with our team. If there is anything that I may assist you with, please feel free to contact me directly at Henry.Neumann@elconvento.com or 787-648-8834. Thank you, Henry Neumann General Manager

We too experienced a party of some sort going on in the hotel the night we arrived. When calling down to the front desk, we were also told there was nothing they could do about the noise, and it would go on until 1AM. Lucky us. The hotel said they would refund half of our room fee for the Thursday night noise, We never saw it. They said they sent it to our third-party booking agent, they said they would send us an email confirmation that it was actually sent, never got that either. The hotel is in a great part of old San Juan, other than that, the slow service in the restaurant, the noise and the charm of the room resembling something you might find in North Korea. On a positive note... free bottles of water! For a better experience, stay on Condado Beach and Uber to Old SJ for the day.
Give me your canned response Henry.

We recently stayed five days at El Convento. We read many reviews prior to coming and understand some of the bad ones, but we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. You can’t beat the location. If you are wanting to primarily explore Old San Juan, you can walk everywhere from the hotel. (It’s also secure). The hotel is overall beautiful, but it does need some refreshing (lamps, furniture, some paint), but this is easily overlooked. The bed and linens were comfortable. The bathroom is small but new and clean. The balcony seating in the courtyard added usable space to the room. Inside the room there are extra features to help with noise from the courtyard. The pool is small but probably the only size allowed given the structure. It’s enough to cool off in and the rooftop view is great. We weren’t planning on eating here because of the food reviews, but ended up dining twice and were pleasantly surprised both times. Rene at the bar is awesome and makes a fantastic mojito! We didn’t have any problems getting Ubers. We enjoyed access to the Marriott Isla Verde resort for some beach time. The unlimited free bottled water came in very handy! Good coffee/smoothly place across the street. Staff is super friendly and helpful.

Wow--I've never seen such whiney reviews! To think I almost passed this up because of of a few negative reviews! This place is a GEM--in the heart of and in the most convenient location in Old San Juan. It's an antique building, and a converted convent--if you want perfect silence, a generic room with all the bells and whistles, please--go stay at a Marriott somewhere! I found it perfectly enchanting--my room had high ceilings with beams and my own private covered patio! I'm a light sleeper and my room was literally across an aisle from the restaurant. I slept perfectly well--they stop all service at 11 p.m.--if you go to bed before then, you're probably not having a great vacation! All service people were amazing, accommodating and friendly. Had Eggs Benedict and cappuccino for breakfast and a margarita and watermelon salad for lunch--all perfectly delicious--can't wait to come back!

I was there for a wedding. The hotel is well kept and clean. The room, Queen Superior, was large with a modernized bathroom but wooden balcony doors and windows could use some updating. Employees very friendly and professional. My only complaint was the internet. You had to go outside of your room to connect and then stay in the lobby or hallway to stay connected. If you went back into the room, you may/maynot remain connected. We ate in the restaurant in the lobby and the hamburgers needed seasoning, or at a minimum salt.

I am unaware of any shuttle. It's a 20 minute drive. I believe you'll either drive or take a cab.
I had a queen deluxe room 1 queen bed only. No other places to sleep. It was a simple room but clean and quiet.
I wasn’t aware of any resort fee and I didn’t check tax calculation. Sorry I haven’t been of any help on this.
