The animation team (Aladdin isa and the whole gang) were great at keeping things lively, we didn’t participate in many of the games and such but it made for good entertainment and the people playing always seemed to be enjoying themselves.
We never did make it to the disco, so we can’t comment on that, but the evening entertainment we did see was great. We also missed the Saturday foam party while on our city excursion, but it seemed like it had been a fun time.
We booked a La Cartes for 5 of our evenings, you can book one day in advance in the viva Wyndham app. I would just book on the app as I woke up in the morning. We loved them all but sofrito was our favourite. Blend had excellent salmon tartar though and the Mexican had amazing margaritas.
Our room (nirvana) was always cleaned well, no robes and slippers and only bottles of pop on the first day which we knew ahead so I brought my own slippers. The website said only 2nd and 3rd floors had balconies, perhaps the call the 1st floor a terasse but all rooms in buildings 4/5/6 had outdoor seating with 2 chairs and a small table. I found the beds a bit firm personally, but I do enjoy a softer mattress.
Chairs by the pool are sometimes are to come by, but never an issue at the beach. Great food all over, sometimes a smidge repetitive but we never went hungry, great coffee at the coffee bar (and wraps and snacks) and evening coffee at the main pool bar was delicious.
Some people complain about if moving to a family resort, but honestly we never saw more that 6-8 kids ever and it wasn’t a bother.
Combined help make the days flow by. Amber does an amazing job as zoomba instructor and gets the body moving. The only suggestion that I have for the entertainment staff is They should try and come down with the microphone and get the people more involved by the pool make it more a little more entertaining (in a fun way).
Dawin at the Italian restaurant and is a genuine great human. Omar at the pool bar was my whistling buddy always knew when bar was open. We feel we made some good friends with the staff.
Now for the negatives the beach was full of seaweed and for the first week we were there they made little to no effort to clean it. You had to walk down to gran Vantana to get a clean beach. Our room had a leak in the ceiling with the rain. And to get it fixed was like pulling teeth so we just gave up and let it go(we only had 2 days left). The buffet staff need to do a better job making you feel more welcome. This is the first resort we have been to where they didn’t seat you and offer you your drinks.
Over all this is a good resort if you like a chill vibe and want to kind of relax I would suggest they go back to adults only. And they need to go back to putting Soda and beer on rooms daily as that is also annoying as you only get Soda and water the first day and 2 bottles of water daily after that. If they worked on the small things they could really make this resort a great place as it is really clean the food is pretty good every day.

The buffet and a la carte options are phenomenal including Sofrito, Peubla222, Blend and Rosmarino! Best food I have had in a long time! Our favorite bartender Windinson (WINDY) always made the best drinks for us! The buffet has so many food choices no matter if its breakfast, lunch or dinner. The pool bar has elite cappuccinos which we would enjoy in the mornings and evenings after dinner.
The overall security team at this resort really makes you feel safe no matter where you go including the mall which is super close and walking distance. You can buy tons of fun souvenirs and there's also a movie theatre at the mall. The resort also has a store in the main lobby when you need anything like snacks/supplies/souvenirs. The amount of excursions choices located nearby makes it more exciting as you have options to plan either half or full day excursions i.e. waterfalls, boat tours, buggies, horseback riding, city tours etc.
The entertainment staff are super cool and always have so many activities running throughout the day! Huge shoutout to Chihuahua, Daddy Cool, Minnie Mouse, Kankan, Lucio, Zorro, Danny, Giselle and everyone else who planned all the games including bocce ball, ping pong, beach Olympics, Zumba, volleyball, catamarans and of course the best foam party ever! The DJ's played the best hits all around and of course planned an awesome beach party. The evening shows are always super fun to watch including the magic show and the performers dancing on stage. Lucio (the Rockstar) had the best evening guitar shows by the pool with a huge list of songs to request!
Our rooms were always cleaned and re-stocked with towels, water, sodas and beers and nothing ever went missing. The staff are always polite and helped us even when our room key had stopped working. They always made sure we were taken care of.
The beach/pool area and the jungle walk way towards the beach is always so clean and very well taken care of. The gardeners and cleaners do a very good job cleaning constantly and making sure that the maintenance is on point. Huge shoutout to these guys especially when it gets super hot/humid.
Overall we had the most amazing experience here and being back home we continue to think about our time spent here. We loved it! Thank you to everyone who made our week the most memorable one yet.
As others have described, this is a 3-star hotel. The location is a short drive from the airport( 25 mins) and about 20 minutes from the old town/ town center. The hotel has one large pool and a 5 minute pathway to get to the beach.
The room we had in block 4 was very large, with a sitting room, balcony and bedroom with vaulted ceilings. The air conditioning worked very well. TV had 2 english channels and wouldn't connect with our IPAD ( ie.. watch netflix etc on the small screen only), but Wifi was good. The beds were on the hard side. Bathroom was decent, and they never ran out of hot water.
Its a combination major things, of the hotel needing a major refresh, and little things like not having face cloths, not replenishing soft drinks that lead to its 3 star rating.
Only certain pool chairs have umbrellas, and you have to be early ( 7am) to get one.
But in general, there is a lack of chairs by the pool by 9:30.. so you have to go to the beach. Its a pleasant walk to the beach, but it does take about 5 minutes. There's a decent lunch grill and bar. Playa Dorada beach is very walkable and nice. Unfortunately hotels beach area either had a few feet of weeds on the beach, and floating just off the shore. A short walk towards the Gran Ventana , the beach there was pristine with no weeds in the water or on the shore.
The food was decent, but repetitive for a 2 week stay. The specialty restaurants create a change of pace, but its really mostly the same food.
The majority of the staff were very friendly and nice. We understand the timeshare guys are trying to earn a salary but anyone who has access to google understands why buying one is a bad decision.
It does require a major update and investment to get this hotel to a 4 star level.
This was my first stay at Viva Heavens Puerto Plata, and, most likely, the last one.
Let’s start with pros:
- Small, but extremely well maintained when it comes to property. It has AMAZING staff, from gardeners to bartenders, doing everything possible for you to enjoy your stay.
- Room is cleaned daily, didn’t have any issues with AC, re-stuffed bottled water or towels.
- Perfect beach as long as you remember you are in Puerto Plata.
- Food is very repetitive, but no problem with my stomach. Always something tasty to eat.
Cons:
- I was staying in a Bliss room (no balcony, and lowest price as I was planning to spend most of my time near the ocean), and this room has a lot of issues due to poor design.
- It had only four small drawers, not enough to put all your stuff.
- No TV Channels guide: I found only one, not trusted English Channel CNN, with the same commercial about “Inside of Africa”. How difficult is to print entire channels line up?
- There is a coffeemaker on a small countertop right under the TV. Problem is – there is no wall plug to plug it in, unless you take it to a night table or a washroom.
- Hangers for towels are located on opposite wall from the shower, so you have to get out from the shower and go all wet to get a towel.
- Not a single hanger to dry out your swimming suits.
- Soft drinks were never re-stuffed.
And the worst two:
-Even with a calm air there are huge waves, knocking you down, with a send in your hair and all lower natural cavities, making almost impossible to swim in the ocean.
-Local vendors from “Playa Dorada Inc…” I met them few years ago at Sunscape, which is about 3 km away. So, I was thinking it is a safe distance, just to find out that Sunscape is closed for a major renovation and all vendors relocated to Viva. Long story short – you are constantly harassed by them. They are sitting right between lounge chairs, constantly offering you pedicure, manicure and all kind of stuff. They don’t care if your eyes closed, they will wake you up every 5 minutes. So, forget about relaxing on the beach, perhaps taking short nap after lunch… You basically laying down in the middle of flea market. They are yelling, screaming, guy with some rattled toys is making sure you don’t sleep. All this is under supervision of the guy whose name on his T-shirt is “Hector the Protector” …
So, I got very good price for this trip, but cons over weighted savings. I am not coming back, and I will not recommend this resort. The rest is up to you.
The rooms are Non-smoking however smoking on the balconies is allowed and most of the seating outside is for smoking. Only a handful of tables in front of the restaurant and bar are labelled "Non-smoking". Smoking included anything from vaping, which was the least invasive, to cigar smoking which seemed to follow us anywhere we sat.
The staff were friendly and the rooms were basic but roomy and clean.
As with many of the hotels in the area maintenance was not a high priority. The stopper for our sink did not work and the toilet tended to run on as the mechanism had been jury rigged rather than fixed. The exercise room had weights, two treadmills and 4 bikes. I managed to get one bike to work but the belts on the treadmills would slip.
We tried to eat at the specialty restaurant as much as possible since the main dining area was buffet and there needed to be better monitoring of the food especially since children were now allowed to get there own food. There was a good variety of different cuisine at the Specialty restaurants and the food was good but it wasn't always what was described on the menu.
The beach was a five to ten minute walk from the pool and water had a lot of seaweed. When we walked down the beach there were areas littered with garbage. Anything from garbage bags to thousands of plastic bottles.
Rating Systems - I know every country gets to pick its rating system, but by US standards this is a 3* not a 4*.
Food - I mean it is mass-produced food in a third world country. I could always find something to eat. The bread products/desserts were very good, fresh fruit was nice, pizza at the beach bar was tasty. Their unprocessed meats (like pork chops, steak) are good, but I didn't care for their sausage and cold cuts. The restaurants were OK - I thought the Dominican was the best - but no meal was delicious and food came out warm instead of hot.
Rooms/Property - We had four rooms in our party. Everything is a bit dated, but they were all functional. Property is nicely maintained. Housekeeping was great - accessible, accommodating.
Staff/Services - Cesar at front desk is A+. Some of the women on the Animation Team were engaging and energetic. Rest of staff was friendly. The people that work there, work some long hours and I am impressed by their positivity. I have to admit that I am not a fan of the con game with the guy who arranges taxis upfront. There are posted rates for rides to all locations, presumably by the tourism board. These rates are already pretty expensive, but I get it. When we returned to the airport our driver was insistent that the concierge told him we would pay $15 more than the posted rate. We settled in the middle (I was going to tip him anyway so out of pocket was pretty much the same) but it left a bad taste in my mouth. And from dealing with the concierge earlier in the week, I believed the driver. You can witness the taxi drivers give the hotel concierge cash kickbacks and now I know why.
Entertainment - There is some basic stuff going on during the day like bingo, zumba classes, etc. It was fun. We really liked beach volleyball - there was usually a game going and people rotated in and out at all levels. Beach was nice and you could usually find chairs available - a little more difficult to find them at the the pool. They have two foosball tables, but no balls! That should be an easy problem to fix. Their jacuzzi is still not working - from reading other posts that has been an issue for a while. Nighttime entertainment is fine. I think maybe 1-2 people are trained dancers/performers and the rest just try hard and show enthusiasm.
Member/Non-member Status - We are not Wyndham points members. Members get better tables, reserved beach seating, towels, drinks, and can reserve restaurants basically whenever they want. I am generally OK with most of that, but I didn't appreciate that they made it really difficult for non-members to get reservations at restaurants (but going to guest services a few times can help) and it was kind of ridiculous when they ran out of non-member towels, but you can see rows and rows of "member" towels available.
Overall, it was fun because we took the experience for what it was and made the most of what was offered.
The air conditioning worked very well which was great. The beds were very comfortable. The buffet was not good at all, same food every day and cold, not much variety. The buffet was good for breakfast and they make fresh eggs and omelettes. We went to all of the al a cartes and there is no limit to how many times you can go. I would highly recommend the al a cartes.
The entertainment is very amateurish and lacking. The disco was supposed to be open 7 days a week but wasn't open all the time as well as karaoke night seemed prearranged with singers and catered to specific guests.
The walkway to the beach is very pretty but the beach is very rough. We never had trouble finding chairs at the beach and the beach restaurant was good for lunch. The alcohol was very low quality especially the wine it seemed very tasteless and watered down.
This is a very very small resort with only one pool, a hot tub that is just a smaller cold pool, only 2 bars (the beach and the pool), the disco has a bar but only opens at 11pm when open. If you are looking for a night life, this isn't the place to stay at. Overall this is a 3 star not a 4 star, we did enjoy the warm weather and being able to relax but will not be back to stay at this resort.
Night life was ok. Entertainment for the kids was ok too.
There is a mall in the plaza 5 minutes up the street off the resort which is safe to walk to. We also booked excursions two through the resort and one with a vendor on the beach. The vendors are on the beach are cheaper than the resort but can be very pushy.
We tried two A La Car restaurants they were great make sure you book those as soon as you arrive at the resort as we couldn't try the other one it was already booked all the food pretty much was good specially Mexican night.
The only issue I really had staying in this resort was with housekeeping. Restocking of the fridge never really happened, we had 4 people in the room they would give us two bottles of water daily after even requesting 4 , also the only gave us 2 towels so I requested 2 more towels bc there was 4 of us in the room and it took them 5 hours to bring the towels. On the website it says they restock your fridge daily with water soda and beer that is not true and it was very hard to get 4 bottled waters for me and my 3 children daily never even seen beer in the fridge once.
Overall I would stay again. I would recommend this Resort for any with a family It's a great for it's price.
