Iberostar Waves Costa Dorada has earned commendations for its friendly and responsive staff, though the hotel's service has been marred by some cleanliness and organizational mishaps. The resort's pool and dining options are a hit with guests, despite occasional reports of outdated rooms and inconsistent amenities. While the rooms are generally tidy, their dated appearance has not gone unnoticed.
The hotel's beachside location is generally appreciated, though not without some complaints about vendor disturbances. Mixed sentiments also surround the hotel's atmosphere and value, with the latter being a point of contention regarding food quality and unexpected costs.

We LOVED it! We are on our 10th trip and this is one of our favorites.
It is not a hotel with specific attractions for children, but we had a lot of fun thanks to the beautiful beach, huge pools, quality entertainment and site activities (with animators).
Our room was very clean and well positioned on site (block 6) (we had seen sea, but ... we didn't really see the sea (too far, so not worth it in our opinion) The site being made in the shape of a ''U'' ensures that even if there is no rain, we always stay dry to go to the Lobby or restaurants
The restaurants offer excellent menus (only three, but at will, so a big plus), the buffets (different location between morning and noon) offered a nice variety (eating everything and dining space was sufficient).
The shows were decent and entertaining, that said, we preferred the pre-show animations and their variety. Special mention to animators who always took the time to play with our 4 year old son as soon as one of them passed nearby (mainly Wayne and Jordan) The beach and poolside are well appointed (with sections sun or shade (beach with trees ++++). It has never lacked chairs (beach or swimming pool), which is an advantage (no need to reserve space in advance to enjoy a nice place) There was no ''goodwill'' from seller to site by the beach, all were very respectful and non-persistent.
We really liked that the hotel was eco-responsible (no plastic, reusable bottle with water filtration, promotes compost and recycling... beautiful resolution). (Note that Wifi is accessible, sustainable and constant throughout the site (even the beach))(The app facilitates the tracking of activities) The hotel also does wildlife restoration and landscaping adjacent to the site, giving us access to magnificent relaxation space.
We were at the restaurant on the beach ''le petit François'' (independent restaurant opened by a Quebecer offering poutine), it is 5 minutes walk to the hotel by the beach.... nice attraction and very popular... a must in our opinion a puerto plata.
We highly recommend this hotel. We're even thinking about going back, which would be a first for us.

We visited the Iberostar Costa Dorada the week of January 3-9th. We are a family of 3 (two adults and one teenager). For reference we have stayed at numerous AI resorts across the Caribbean including two other Iberostar properties (one in Cuba and one in Mexico). In a nutshell we really enjoyed our stay at this resort and would totally return for another visit.
Travel: We flew with Air Transat but both ways they were not true Transat flights (e.g. run by affiliate airlines – one being Czech air). Transfers at the POP end were smooth and the Iberostar was the first drop off from the airport.
Check In: We arrived around 1:30 pm at the resort and had to wait for our room until after 3 pm. There is a shower/washroom you can use in the lobby while the bellhops hold your luggage until the room is available. We received our wristbands and were able to go for lunch while we waited for the room.
Room: We had an Oceanfront room in building one on the ground floor (room 1013) with one king bed and they provided a single cot for our teen. The cot was a real bed with a thick mattress and the room was more than large enough with the cot and the king bed. I understand that the rooms in this building have been renovated. The room had adequate storage and a couch but pretty standard for the Caribbean (eg nothing special). There was a min bar stocks with cola, sprite and beer which was refilled as needed. There is a Smart TV with no English channels so bring a Firestick for streaming if you wish.I have never stayed in any resort in the Caribbean that wasn’t damp and this was no exception but the AC worked well. I don’t think any of our wet swimwear dried all week with the humidity but that’s fairly normal. We had the power go out a few times during our stay (quick outages). They did a fumigation (no idea why) of our room one day which they compensated with a bottle of rum. No issues with hot water. The room was kept very clean.
Drinking Water: I loved their drinking water filtration system at this resort. They provide two glass water bottles in your room and there are actually dispensing stations in each building along with an ice machine. There were also water stations pretty much everywhere in the resort so you didn’t have to just go to the bars for drinking water like other resorts I have stayed. I loved this feature. We brought a few plastic bottles of water after security at the airport so it was nice to have these to refill rather than the glass bottle.
Food: there is one buffet restaurant, one snack bar and three a la cartes. The variety of foods was good but as typical with AIs the buffet gets repetitive after a while. The buffet has theme nights for dinner: Mexican, Asian, Dominican, International and Spanish. Breakfast and lunches are also served in the buffet restaurant and there is a snack bar by the pool open for 11 to 5 that had a selection of salads, burgers, nachos fries etc etc. My only complaint about the buffet is that breakfast only runs until 10 am each day. When I’m on vacation I like to sleep in so we only ended up getting to breakfast two times and ended up eating lunch/brunch most days at the snack bar when it opened at 11. I was told that on the weekends breakfast ran later but they didn’t update the app with those hours so I wasn’t sure. We ate at all three a la cartes. The Mexican was average. The tacos in the buffet were pretty much the same. The Japanese was our favorite: a fun show of them cooking in front of us and a lot of food. The Italian was also just average to us. I don’t know if it was just what we ordered but I didn’t like their tomato sauce (too sweet with a weird sticky texture) at all so that might be the reason. One highlight was the beach party paella which took place on Saturday. They cook a HUGE paella over fire on the beach which is loaded with lobster and seafood. It was the best thing of the week for me.
Service: I found the service in the restaurants (particularly the a la cartes) to be below what we have experienced at the other Iberostar properties. Service in the Mexican and Italian a la cartes was very rushed and not attentive at all. For example at the Mexican restaurant the server came over to get our food orders about 30 seconds after we sat down without even taking drink orders. We were never offered coffees after dinner etc. all of the a la cartes we were in and out in less than an hour and it felt far too rushed of an experience. In the buffet and snack bars we ended up sitting in the same places all week and the servers there were excellent and had our drink orders ready when they saw us coming. Finally there did not seem to be enough bartenders most of the time we were there and there were long lines. We also found it strange that in the lobby and theater there were no servers to take drink orders which is atypical at all the resorts we have stayed at.
Grounds/Facilities: the property is very well maintained and immaculate. They have a crew cleaning the beach each morning (more on the beach later). There is one large pool in the center of the property and a huge beach front. The pool is quite cold. At the peak of the hottest and sunniest time of day the pool felt refreshing but too chilly for me the rest of the time. The ocean was warmer than the pool! There are plenty of sun beds at the beach, pool and some in-between. As usual there were chair hogs putting out towels before 9 am by the pool and coming only late in the day but we were able to easily find pool side chairs even though the resort was busy.
Bars: There is no shortage of bars at the property and as mentioned above I felt they could have used more bartenders. There was also a huge variation in the way each bartender makes the same drinks so be prepared for that. Selection of booze was decent and they have some premium items for additional cost.
Entertainment: this resort has a jam packed list of activities each day and the Animation staff are high energy and enthusiastic. Winners of the day events win prizes which are presented at the show each night (rum or hats) The nightly show productions (eg singing and dancing) were excellent. There were four productions showing on the app but only three ran for some reason (Vegas, Dominican, Disco). There was supposed to be a dance party at the beach one night but it was canceled due to a wedding. There was supposed to be a Rock show and it also was canceled. They don’t seem to update the app when there are changes which is an area they could improve upon. When there wasn’t a “real” show there was karaoke and some lame audience participation shows. Overall though the entertainment was good. One note is that the disco is off property and open to locals.
Beach: if you’re a beach person and are expecting white sand and crystal clear water you will be disappointed. By the end of the day there is seaweed (or similar) that washes up at the beach and the water was pretty murky. That being said the grounds crew cleans the beach each morning and it’s very well maintained compared to walking further down the beach. There are locals on the beach trying to get you to come to the market and sell you things but I am used to that. In general the beach wasn’t a deal breaker for us and we did spend most of our time at the pool. I did notice I got a lot of bites on my legs on the days we went to the beach so there are definitely bugs there (sand fleas maybe???)
Wifi: Wifi worked very well throughout the resort and even on the beach and poolside. We used our Fire-stick a few times on the TV in the room for my hubby to watch football but it did buffer a bit.
Tours: we hired a private taxi for a Puerto Plata city tour (Salvador Taxi). It was super reasonable ($100 USD for all of us for a half day). It poured rain all afternoon so we couldn’t go up the cable car but the tour was still great. Just a note that when you visit the rum factory and chocolate factory for “tours” they are pretty much shops for you to buy things and not at all true tours. If you google city tour you will see all the stops as most taxis do the same itinerary.
In summary we were very happy with this resort. No it’s not a 5 Star property and has some areas for improvement but for the price we paid during peak school winter break it was great (e.g. it was half the price of other resorts in Punta Cana). We would definitely return based on our experience and the value it offered.

Third visit since 2005. We brought friends for a two week vacation. Iberostar always exceeds expectations. Customer service is second to none. Lucy accommodated our request on check in, the room was comfortable, a/c and ceiling fan kept it cool. Calls for assistance with the room had a prompt response and follow-up call, to ensure they were complete and we were satisfied. All restaurants were impeccably run, with attendants keeping the food fresh and cleaning spills. The Japanese was our favourite- delicious food and the a fun cooking show! Staff are all friendly and welcoming, everyone goes above and beyond to assist and ensure the guests are happy and having fun! Thursdays and Saturdays feature lobster/seafood stew and seafood paella on the beach at lunch time, cooked in a giant wok. We spent most time by the pool, it is huge and clean. The Animacion team is energetic and friendly, always engaging with guests. The beach is nice. There was some seaweed and there was always a group of fellows cleaning it and trucking it away. The grounds are beautiful and well maintained. This is a relatively small resort and easy to navigate. Again, I cannot give enough praise to ALL the staff! We have visited several other resorts in Puerto Plata and Iberostar Costa Dorada is the best in every category. I can’t wait to vacation here again!

Iberostar Costa Dora, a very good option, I thought about it because I was there for its opening and I was very delighted and wanted to return now to celebrate the birthday of my beloved daughter CHAYANNE. The first thing I want to thank my Concierge Dawell and another customer service guy Gabriel for being such a nice person during my stay. Second, I am very upset by the way Elizabeth treated me, who claims to be the Customer Services Manager. That position is too big for her because she is supposed to accommodate small situations that may occur. In my case, I chose such a beautiful destination to celebrate my beloved girl's 16th birthday. In total we were 21 people and when I want to reserve a restaurant they tell me that they can't accommodate that many people. I even told them to give me the last hour so I could make my daughter's birthday a pleasant moment and they couldn't make it happen, so I had to celebrate my daughter's birthday at the law firm. I wanted to buy some balloons and the guy who was in customer service at that time, I think his name was Nataniel, told me that the hotel didn't have them but that I could buy them outside and bring them. Then I proceeded to contact my concierge Dawell who told me that balloons were not accepted for the reason that the hotel protects the environment and they did not accept plastic things. Dawell even told me to talk to Elizabeth to corroborate the information because He told me that I was not allowed to have a Customer Service guy tell me yes. Then I went to Customer Service and spoke with Elizabeth, the first thing is that while she was talking to me she was using the PC, ''she didn't pay attention to me'' she told me no with a bad gesture and only offered me to buy Flowers for the birthday a 6-unit package of roses for $78 us. In the end I said no. Thanks to my concierge I was able to get my daughter a cardboard pennant that said. Happy Birthday, A Princess Tihara And a ribbon that models use personalized with her name for my daughter. It was awesome.. But the hotel's customer service is terrible, starting with its host who does not pay attention to the customer. Afterwards, everything is cool: The bartenders, the waitresses, the waiters, the entertainment guys, the very good disco DJ. Thanks to Dawell and Gabriel my vacation was great.

Cons: Rooms are VERY Dated. AC didn’t keep the room very cold, it was comfortable during the date but we were hot at night.
We complained, the front desk staff was very helpful and understanding. They attempted to move us twice. The first room had upgraded bathrooms but the AC was not working. The second room was a carbon copy of the first room. We opted to stay where we were instead of moving (a huge inconvenience).
Pool was murky & the water was unpleasantly warm…think bath water
Rust in bathroom shower/tub/ brown water flowing from the sink & tub for about 2 hours one day
No teen club or activities for kids over 8
Toilet took forever to flush (just a minor inconvenience)
Not enough outlets in the room, bring 2 prong extension cords.
No top shelf alcohol
Pros:
The staff work hard, housekeeping did an excellent job keeping the room exceptionally clean
Pool staff work hard to keep the pool clean, I think it’s a filtration issue though
Bar tenders are amazing! Josue, Raul and William kept the drinks flowing and are exceptionally kind and remembered our drinks (they even had them ready as soon as we got to the bar)
Reudy patiently took us around to different rooms he did everything within his power to help & make our stay pleasurable.
Beach is beautiful
Japanese restaurant was good Italian was pretty good too, stay away from the pizza
Mexican was our least favorite
I give this place 3 stars, would I return..no..was if awful no
Get off the resort. We did the waterfall excursion with buggies, and hoarse back riding. This was the highlight of the trip

9th stay! This hotel is incredibly clean everywhere on site. Beautiful peacocks strut in front of you throughout the site. There is a beautiful garden full of orchids. The staff is really nice and smiling. The rooms are good. Air conditioning which works very well, always hot water for the shower. They provide us with a large glass bottle that we can fill on all floors with good cold water. Tip: bring your own bottle that you can refill to take to the beach or pool. Comfortable bed, large balcony, coffee maker. The swimming pool is large and very well maintained. Lots of chairs and palapas, both at the pool and at the beach. The outdoor toilets are spotless. Good a la carte restaurants and the buffet is very varied, fruits, vegetables, fresh juices, 4-5 types of bread, sublime desserts. A beautiful beach for walking and swimming. No busy sellers on the beach. Every evening, on the large outdoor terrace, there are singers, violinists, etc. Before the late night show. The drinks are super good and the coffees too. The only downside for the princess in me is that even though we are very loyal customers, they don't give us a renovated room, but that's a detail ;) we will come back anyway. The weather was really not good… a lot of rain. But it's not their fault :)

wow! nothing negative to say just wow! I just came back from this hotel and it is incredible, the staff are super cool, always in a good mood!
excellent food always fresh and a variation of different food every evening one evening we had a wide variety of seafood, one evening Japanese food, Italian etc. it was really excellent and very fresh! as good in the morning as in the evening. there are also 2 buffets.
The number 1 staff always in a good mood the entertainment GREAT there is always something to do and the ideas are really original that entertains everyone, bingo, kayaking lessons in the swimming pool, water polo, volleyball, dance lessons and much more !
the hotel is very clean too! early in the morning the employee collects small tree debris that falls during the night on all the site. During my 7 days I didn't see 1 piece of trash lying around all week! and nothing was lacking in cleaning it was really clean!!!! Every day he cleans the beach to remove algae, leaves, etc. lots of beach and pool chairs and always replace them as you go! I advise you to place your towels early on the chairs on the edge of the pool if you want a particular place (in the shade)
the hotel is very eco responsible also everywhere on the site places for trash/recycling/compost meter in the rooms also and all the worms are in reusable plastic! and the worms from the restaurant in the window!
the shows in the evening are really impressive, beautiful dancing, beautiful costumes, entertainment on stage also to get the audience involved, it was super cool!
for our last evening there were 4 stands in the middle of the hotel which allowed us to discover the popular city specialty food of the dominican republic- Sosua/imbert/puerto plata/cabarete It was really good! there are bars all over the site too
we ate at the Japanese restaurant Sakura for the last evening it was excellent
I only have positive things to say about this hotel, I recommend it 100%, you won't regret it, I loved my experience!!!

We were just at the resort from November 10th to 20th and loved the resort, it is beautiful and the staff works really hard to keep the resort clean. The ocean was warm but not clear enough to snorkel and there was large chunks of coral that you avoid while swimming the life guard usually tells you to move away from them. The right hand side of the beach was better to swim. The food in the buffet and the snack bar was good, always varied and the staff works hard to keep it clean and fresh. I enjoyed the salad bar and the fresh fruit. The al la cartes were good, l enjoyed the Mexican and Japanese the best, the Italian was ok all had good service but l enjoyed the Mexican the best. Our room was room 4220, third floor closest to the entertainment area good grief it was crazy loud to sleep at night. I would suggest getting another room if you prefer a quiet evening. The negatives l have about the resort is the locks on the slider door was broken they should be replaced and the biggest negative l have is the resort is quiet from Monday to Friday and Friday afternoon the resort is full of young Dominicans looking to have a blast over the weekend which is great for them but it turns the resort into a huge party time. It is kind of like Miami beach on March break. The resort population feels like it triples and you are lining up for everything. Dinner in the buffet on Friday night was chaos, you couldn't get through to get to the food and when you got to the front most of it was gone. The music is loud the snack bar and pool is full and the staff is working so hard trying to keep up. Although l loved the resort from Monday to Friday, l would not come back because of the volume of people that come on the weekends, maybe if the numbers were less it would be not so crazy.

Visited the Ibearostar Waves Costa Dorada in Puerto Plata for the first time in November 2024. The resort was very clean and the staff were great. The food was delicious. The transfer from the airport to the resort was pretty fast. We were the second stop. Got to try all three restuarants onsite - the Japanese, Mexican and the Italian. Food was really tasty at all restaurants. The buffet was good for breakfast and lunches. Really liked the omelettes. We stayed in a Junior Oceanfront Suite and it was plenty of room. We requested two beds but these rooms supply only a king bed. The couch turned into a pull out bed which the staff made up promptly into another full size bed. So, we got our two beds after. The entertainment was good. We enjoyed all the shows in particular the Michael Jackson one which was excellent. The weather was mixed we had a combination of sun/cloud and rain. The rain did not spoil our trip. I really missed the straws for my drinks so I remind you to bring your own straw if you like them. Also. bring an extension cord for the room. This was helpful as not many outlets in the room. The flies were busy after the rain so recommend insect repellant. The resort supplies a water filtration system outside the rooms for drinking. Would recommend bringing your own drink bottle for water but the hotel does supply reusable ones that they reclean onsite. The pool was beautiful. The beach was nice but not like Punta Cana. Overall enjoyed the stay here and would book again in the future. Great find!

We spent the second week of December,2024 at the Iberostar waves Costa Dorada. This was our third vacation at this resort. It was great pre-Covid, needed improvement post-Covid and currently still needs to improve on many features that did not meet expectations. We waited over two hours to get a recently remodelled suite. It was disappointing to say the least. The first day the shower drain in one room plugged and repeated it the second day after being repaired. As we were in a two bedroom family suite we required both showers. The refrigerator in the main suite leaked each day despite also”being repaired.” The safe would not open on the second day and required security to come open it and reset it. The rooms both looked tired other than the bathrooms which were somewhat updated with new tile, fixtures and paint over old trim. Day two required a repair on the patio door which emitted the most excruciating squeal when opening that it was not being used. It was repaired that day. Food was great and even a hit with our three grandchildren. Despite an obvious lack of wait staff, we did get through the week with plenty of good food. Beach palapa were being renewed throughout the week which should be great for the future. Beach loungers are still a critical issue in my view. Many are reserved with a towel all day and some never used, yes, never used throughout the day. Monitoring of this issue is a problem at every DR resort. This was not an issue in One resort we visited in Cozumel as security simply removed the towels after a period of time. Weekends and locals is still one issue we have in the Dominican Republic. Although the resort does its best, behaviour and attitude makes for unpleasant meals and relaxation on the beach and around the pool. Hopefully, management will read this review and respond to my comments specifically and not in their usual “canned” comments.
