We were so pleased when we saw this in person. We parked our car right out front and the room we were given was very cosy. The staff were very helpful and accommodating with any questions we had. Gave us directions to a good place to eat and told us where to go to see things. We felt very safe...

El Beaterio is an elegant, understated, and extremely affordable oasis in the historic center of Santo Domingo. A restored convent, the stone walls, interior courtyard, and period furnishings lend a historic note to anyone's stay. The location is ideal, the the personnel are hospitable and helpful. This is truly a wonderful, intimate hotel to which I plan to return.

So glad to have added four days to our trip to see Santo Domingo. The Zona Colonial is a feast for the historically curious and El Beaterio is ideally situated. Very nice staff and an amazing aura from this place. Rooms are lovely, air conditioning is great, the wrought iron furniture has character, the upstairs rooftop with small garden is...

This was an amazing experience. The environment is special, the room is fine, and the location is safe and convenient for walking in the historic district. There are many opportunities to learn about the building and look at some of the collections on display. The breakfast is simple but good enough, and the staff are helpful, even speaking French and...

An historical hotel with a good display of its various stories in both Spanish and English around the building. We'll located in the zona colonial, El Beaterio is beautifully preserved, with good prices for the area and quality. The rooms and bathrooms are small, however, reflecting the original nature of the plane - a home for monks! Service was good...

In early 16th. century, "Beatas" lived in this house, pious women, loyal to the Dominican order, devoted to serving people. They were not nuns and, therefore, not cloistered. The ruins were meticulously restored and transformed into a small boutique hotel in the 90's by its original owner, an Englishman, and in recent years sold to a Frenchman from one of...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
XVIth century old convent, El Beaterio witnesses the history of Santo Domingo for almost 500 years. Faithfully restored in keeping with the original charm and architecture of its period, this quaint and private hotel offers its guests a unique atmosphere of the inimitable Dominican art de vivre. Nested in the heart of the colonial city, El Beaterio offers eleven coquettish and sober rooms, laid out around a flowery colonial interior patio. Between its stone walls, it’s a peace oasis in the middle of a vibrant and enlivened city. Established in 1530 with the beatas given the task of collecting girls of all ages, Spanish and mixed race, lost on Earth». You’ll find out what a beaterio is, and you’ll learn about the religious figures responsible for its foundation in Santo Domingo. You’ll discover two residents of El Beaterio, Sor Leonor de Ovando and Dona Elvira de Mendoza, first poets of the New World. Since 1990 when UNESCO declared the Colonial City of Santo Domingo as “World Heritage Site”, El Beaterio is classified as “building of documental, historic and architectural value”. In 2016, El Beaterio is officially recognized as Dominican Republic’s first hotel-museum by the Ministry of Culture. ... more   less
