this small hotel consists of 10 double rooms and 10 twin rooms with one large family suite. The daily breakfast served at the restaurant by the sea consisted of either an indonesian breakfast or american (eggs any style, fruit, coffee/tea, toast, criossant and sweet bread) plus extras at a small cost. The restaurant food was excellent at very reasonable prices.Tha manager Agung is very accomodating and speaks well. The only downfall is you don`t have tea/ coffe making fac. in room or small bottles of s/poo, etc. But I never need these items.

We stayed here for a few days last year on our annual trip to Bali so decided to do the same again this year...
We spoke with the new managers last year who were just lovely!! They had recently taken over the management of this small hotel so it is lovely to see the improvements they have made in just one year... The beach at the front is nice and clean now complete with sun lounges, there's also many sun lounges around the pool, the bathroom amenities are of nice quality and there seems to be more people staying here. The gardens are lovely and well maintained.
The hotel is beachfront in a GREAT location, all the other hotels in this area are upmarket and expensive but Mata Hari Terbit has the location without the big price tag.
The rooms are comfortable and very spacious. The bathroom is dated but still clean and adequate. There is a small private terrace to sit on and the food at the restaurant is AMAZING!!
The breakfast is lovely, not buffet but more than enough to eat.
We met up with some friends last night at the restaurant that was celebrating the opening of "Mr Bob" Bar n Grill. We all ordered the Ribs that were recommended... They were DELICIOUS!! Without a doubt the best ribs we've ever tasted!! I would highly recommend you try this restaurant even if you stay at another hotel in the area.
The staff of both hotel and restaurant were so friendly and attentive to guest needs. Although this hotel may be a little older than others it has real Balinese charm.
I don't think you could get this wonderful beachfront position anywhere else in Bali for this price... It is FANTASTIC value for money...

We started our Bali adventure here with my hubby & 3 kids and we all enjoyed our time. Spent 4 nights. It is a very low key resort with beautiful well kept gardens and beach front access. The beach is a little messy but that doesn't matter because it's just great to see all that's going on out at sea. Everyone at the resort are super lovely people and will go out of their way to assist with whatever you need. The rooms are big, beds super comfy but the bathrooms are a little outdated. Hubby & I had a wonderful full body massage at Grace Spa. They charge more than other spas in the area but it worked for us ($15 Aud each still cheaper and better than aussie) 1 parent could get a massage while the other watched the kids in pool than swap over. This is much better and easier if you have kids. Plus I found grace spa was a lot more spacious and she has different areas to have it rather than being in a room with no natural light. They have Watersport facility right on beach. We did the fly fish and I would recommend doing the sports here. There are not much vendor operators here so you have a lot more space at sea and you go really high. We went to the other water sports down the road where every one goes and is was chaotic. Just too much happening and looked unsafe. We also did the fly fish and it wasn't that great. Because there are too many boats around, you can't go as high & enjoy it like the one at Matahari. My best tip would be to try the Bumbi Buli Restaurant. Right next door to Matahari. The meals are just beautiful with a lot of traditional Balinese herbs/spices/sauces. More expensive than other restaurants in the area but well worth the all over experience. You have to make a reservation as well. Overall staying at Matahari with their low price meant we got to spend money on all the activities the area has to offer plus I love the fact it's a small resort. There are no queues at reception and breakfast is nice & fast. If I came back to Bali than I would definitely stay here again.

Booked for 18 days after inspecting the hotel in May 2013 - a beautiful tranquil setting. May 2014 we stayed 5 days out of 18 and had to run for our sanity. There is a reception center next door which looked like beautiful parklands ... until they set it up as a full scale stadium. The doosh, doosh started at 8am and finished after 11pm. It happened in 3 days of our 5 days stay.

This is not just a complaint about the music - the sub woofers are so fierce that it penetrated the whole building and you can FEEL the thump with all doors and windows closed. Forget watching TV - you simply cannot hear it.It was totally stressful. Sleep ? Forget it.

I rang Agoda.com and after many non-returned calls, it was finally sorted after 2 full days and they penalized us an extra night cost. We had no choice, it was the money or our sanity.

So dear readers - BE WARNED - we wish some-one posted about the noise before we booked. As i have gained a lot through this forum, I do owe you by posting this warning.

Look elsewhere .....

All of thing related this hotel is excellent. Staff, room, breakfast, service and more than those things, they have private beach!!

My daughter love to play around the beach. Compare to other beachfront hotels around tanjung benoa, this hotel is worth of money, because cheap and private beach facility.

Food is good as well. Garden around the hotel, swimming pool near the beach and they have beachside restaurant.

One word for this hotel, excellent!!

The resort opens to the beach and is at a very convenient location in Nusa Dua. The water sports are right beside the resort and you can spend the entire day resting at the beach with food from the restaurant. Their service is very friendly. The rooms are big and clean. I did try their spa and its alright. Its an apt place for German tourists as the whole staff can converse in German besides Eng & Balinese. The food is quite good. The whole resort gives you the feel of a countryside with small huts made in between the rooms and near the pool.

I've stayed at the Matahari 3 or 4 times now but unlikely to go back. The bathrooms are in serious need of upgrade and the pushy sell reception of trips and tours when you're checking in at 1am is just irritating. However, the gardens are still immaculate and the layout of the chalet with the outside balcony area is very nice and can't complain about the amenities in the room itself eg tv, fridge, tea & coffee etc.
Main downside is the Matahari's new neighbours - basically it's an events space which seems to be hired out for weddings etc which have VERY lound music and all night long. Even if you've hit the local bars and ready to turn in at 1am ... you'll be kept awake long after (assuming that someone has hired it when you happen to stay).

Foodwise, lunch and dinner was very nice and staff are friendly, breakfast is very uninspiring. I had previously stayed at the Kind Villa Bintang before I tried Matahari and this is where I'm likely to go back to next time.

Small but well-laid out hotel which is good for relaxing around the pool or on the beach with a book. Everything is very clean from the beach to the gardens and the rooms. Recommended for adults that want to chill out and enjoy the peace, not for families or people looking for a lively atmosphere. Plenty of restaurants close by and the hotel food is also very good. Reception staff are very friendly and happy to help with any trips although price-wise I think you can do better by talking to the tours guys along the road. If you enjoy boat trips, I would highly recommend the sailing trip to Lembongan island

On the downside the bathrooms could do with an upgrade and seem to have deteriorated in the last 6 months. Really need some regrouting, general decoration, remove the chipped soap dish etc to freshen them up. Selection of toiletries seems to have reduced too. Breakfast is a la carte rather than buffet and limited choice is ok for a couple of days but certainly not outstanding.

Small hotel with lovely garden right on the beach, in need of investment, our room was large but dark and smelled of mold, we had go to get some pine disinfectant to improve the odour. Bath room was nothing short of discussing. Moved out after one night.

I booked this hotel just for a couple of nights and was very very pleasantly surprised. The photos on Hotels.com don't really do it justice. Huge clean rooms, lcd TV, gorgeous exotic gardens which are incredibly well tended to, and a fabulous swimming pool right overlooking the beach. The breakfast was great too- lots of it and delicious- included in the price. The resort also has a spa, which I didn't use but it looked lovely, and the staff were always helpful at reception. We found this room at a fantastic price, and it really was great value for money. 100% recommended, would love to go back.

I did not notice any door that could connect the two rooms. But the room we had was very very large and could easily fit 4 people - great for a family.
