Staying in the oldest cabin right on the edge of the grand canyon would be anyone's dream. Having it fully decorated in holiday garb... we got to walk out to the rim of the Grand Canyon 15 ft away with our wine classes and cheese and enjoy the view. Once in a lifetime trip.

Buckey O'Neil suite! WOW!
Felt honored to stay there. Walked outside to watch sunrise and sunset. Very roomy with all the amenities. Bed was comfy. Janey at the front deck was wonderful. She knows how to take care of her guests.

The cabin was nice. It was much larger than the others and the mini fridge came in handy. The bedroom and living room were spacious for a cabin. The fireplace did not work and they gave us a discount because of it. It is not a private tucked-away bungalow. Due to its historic nature (the oldest structure on the South Rim), location (about 15 feet from the Rim and on the Rim Trail), and the layout (attached to other cabins in a dormirtory type setting) it is not a place to be for peace and quiet. Though I was there for my honeymoon, we didn't mind the noise outside, due to the excitement of being in the cabin and all of the hiking we did. The El Tovar was a nice restaurant, I recommend the Turtle Dessert. The food in the Bright Angel Lodge wasn't bad. It was more or less diner food but adequate. The Fridge in the cabin was perfect for our early start on hikes and being able to store food and cold drinks. The Restaurants around the canyon are very crowded and waits could last an hour or more, so any way to avoid them for a few meals is recommended. The staff was nice, especially giving us a discount when the fireplace was not working. California Condors perch outside the cabin in the canyon. A lot of people saw the condors. Unfortunately we were not around for any sightings.

The Bright Angel Lodge sits on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon and the Buckey O'Neill cabin sits the closest to the rim of ALL lodging in the park, with the most glorious view imaginable! The Buckey is the oldest structure in the park and while staying there, you will feel as if you stepped back in time. You start out by registering at the front desk of the Bright Angel Lodge where the concierge will take you directly to the Buckey and explain its history. Before staying in this cabin, I did not have a good idea of how it was situated in respect to Bright Angel Lodge. I thought it might be a good distance away but that is not the case. There is a small corridor leading from the main structure of the lodge to a door that takes you outside. Just a very few steps away is another door that has the name "Buckey Lodge" on it. It is a keyed entry so you do not have to be concerned about tourists wandering about. (This gives you very quick access to the main area of the lodge with the restaurant, front desk services and gift shop.) When you enter the Buckey Lodge, it includes several other rooms, but you will take a right turn down another short corridor which leads you to the Buckey Suite, which directly faces the South Rim. While you're in the Buckey, you don't feel like you're in a lodge with other rooms. It was very quiet. The Buckey Suite contains a very large living area, outfitted with a very comfy sofa and chairs, numerous reading lights, flatscreen TV, fireplace, a small table/chairs and a wet bar with fridge/coffeemaker. There is also a door leading directly outside that puts you a few short steps away from the edge of the canyon. (Keep your drapes drawn while you're there to avoid tourists peeking in your windows!) There is another door leading to a very large bedroom with a comfy king bed, another flatscreen, phone, reading lights, large closet, ironing board/iron and another very comfy chair with a reading light. The ensuite bathroom is not large but very nice and the entire cabin was immaculately clean. The green tea toiletries were wonderful too. There is a plaque in the room along with some pictures of Mr. O'Neill and you can just use your imagination to dream about what it was like for him to live in this cabin on the edge of one of the most beautiful places on earth. "Wow!" comes to mind! By staying in the Buckey, you are also just a very short distance from the Lookout Studio and the Bright Angel Trail. The South Rim path is directly in front of the lodge so you can easily access all the lookout points as well as El Tovar and Hopi House (beautiful jewelry). The main shuttle stop with transfer available to the South Rim West, South Rim East and the main visitor center is also very close by, maybe a 5-minute walk at most. The Bright Angel gift shop is very nice as is El Tovar's but I can't say the same for the Bright Angel Restaurant. The food at Bright Angel's Restaurant is mediocre and the service was almost hostile. However, the Arizona Room at Bright Angel offers delicious food and very friendly, efficient service. Be prepared to wait! El Tovar's restaurant is absolutely fabulous, the service is terrific (we were fortunate enough to enjoy our Thanksgiving dinner there and it was wonderful) and if you can get a table at the front of the restaurant, you'll also have a view to remember....and I'm happy to report that we had a view, and Thanksgiving, to remember! While you're staying in the Buckey, be sure to get up early at least one day to see the sunrise and go to one of the west rim vistas, such as Hopi Point, to watch a sunset. If you can't, you can still walk along the South Rim and see astounding views and possibly see one of the desert bighorn sheep leap over the canyon rim to rest on a ledge below. With tax, the cost of the cabin approaches $400 per night but the Buckey O'Neill Suite and our Grand Canyon memories were worth every penny. Unforgettable! (Please check out my review under Bright Angel Lodge for photos of the Buckey)

My wife and I stayed here for our one night at the Grand Canyon. I chose it because I wanted to overwhelm her and because I knew it could get cold in the Winter time and I wanted to be able to walk out to the rim and right back in if we wanted to warm up. The cabin is a cabin so don't expect the Waldorf but it is comfy and cozy and has two rooms one with a fire place and Large screen TV and the other with a King size plush bed and a large screen TV. From the bed you can open the windows to the side and watch the sun come up to the East and look straight out to the North at the Canyon, The Canyon is approx. 20 feet from the door to the rock safety barrier. You have two pay telescopes for looking down into the canyon literally right out of the front doors. We walked to a close by Cafeteria and got a Pizza and walked back to the room to eat in front of the fire. I would not waste time in a restaurant when you have this place. The room has a fridge and coffee maker and books for reading. Part of the cost of this room for us was justified by maximizing Sunset and Sunrise time. We had a limited amount of time and this room allowed us to be right at the rim and warm. You will not beat the view and the fun of walking to the edge of the canyon and just as a bunch of visitors start to read the historic sign about the cabin you turn and walk in the front door. The Bathroom is up to day but not overly spacious. This cost about twice as much as any room I have ever stayed in but it was worth EVERY Penny for us. Your definitely want to try and reserve well in advance since it is the one and only at the Grand Canyon with a few million visitors a year.
We had no issues with people looking in or walking in but I did make a could signs to hang that said private cabin please respect our privacy but I didn't use them.

After a week of rafting in the canyon, Bar 10 Ranch, touring through Zion and a stay at the North Rim we made our way to the South Rim. We chose early Sept thinking the crowds would be less, which I'm sure they were, but we still found it chaotic in comparison. Bucky O'Neil's Suite was our place of refuge!! Even though it's located right on the walkway of the canyon rim at Bright Angel Lodge we had solitude. We didn't have the experience some others mentioned of other Canyon visitors walking up to the door or letting themselves in. Our privacy was respected and we appreciated the special surroundings. The cabins history states that it is the oldest standing cabin on the South Rim. It is truly historic, but modern, (the first time we had a TV in over a week, but who needs that at the Grand Canyon) and I feel privileged to have stayed there.
As a side note we chose to get most of our meals to-go and enjoy them in our special cabin with a bottle of wine and a fire in the fireplace. I enjoyed having coffee sitting on the wall of the rim early in the morning before there were many people out & about.
The king size bed was extremely comfortable and the fans comfortably cooled the cabin. It's very quiet after sunset and we were not disturbed.

On our recent visit to the Grand Canyon we had the outstanding opportunity of staying at Bright Angel - the O’Neil cabin! It is the oldest, historic, and closest to the rim cabin in the canyon. I had called for reservations to any of the hotels on the South Rim about 3 months ago and was delighted to hear they indeed had rooms available. On a whim I asked if the O'Neil cabin was available. Imagine my surprise when they said it indeed was available. I grabbed it in a heartbeach! We were very, very pleased with this cabin and recommend it highly. It's two rooms - large kingsize bed in one and rustic livingroom decor with an electric fireplace in the other - rustic in only the best way possible. It also had tables, chairs, sink, fridge, coffee pot, etc. Couch, big comfy chairs, two large flat-scree TVs and a modern bath. Pictures cannot capture the grandness of the canyon – it is impossible to even describe the massiveness of it all….and we could view it all from our cabin.....beautiful!!! After touring the park we returned to our beautiful cabin, poured a glass of wine and sat on the rim to watch the sun go down…can’t quite describe the feeling…it was wonderful! After a truly restful night in our cabin ont he rim, we awoke early morning to watch the sunrise in front of our cabin (it was a very chilly start to the day) which was magnificent! Back to bed for a few hours - packed-up and checked out by 11:00. Did a bit of gift shopping at the Bright Angel Gift Shop – great items and reasonably priced. We were truly fortunate to be able to book this cabin as I have read it is almost always booked up to a year in advance. It was such a wonderful stay...wonderful! The only downside was there was a lot of foot traffic out front and often times folks would walk up to the door to peek in...we didn't mind....we even invited a few in to see our accommodations...met some very nice people doing this I might add....what fun!!!

The oldest building/cabin on the rim, since absorbed into and accessed via inside hallway of Bright Angel lodge building. Various character traits fitting it's age including creaky wood floors, updated ski lodge wood interior and warm master bedroom with firm king bed with seperate bath. Gas fireplace on timer warmed the spirits for stuffing backpacks and helped warm the two room oasis, assisted by 3 fans we found in the closet, pre dozing. Refridgerator without freezer a plus for beverage and food storage. National Geographic Adventure website lists Bucky's at 15th of 15 top weird and wild "treasures" in the US National parks system ..."Coolest view from a lodge"...we couldn't agree more...enjoyed our early open door rim view, on a brisk morning, of a Creator's sunrise....perfect start to our backpack hike down to Bright Angel campground/Phantom Ranch for 25th wedding Anniversary celebration. ...down South Kaibab, up Bright Angel. We added a couple of photos....Cheers!

We had only one night at the Grand Canyon and we were fortunate enough to snag this room! The Canyon is just a few step outside of your door. WHAT VIEWS!!! and the star gazing at night is breath taking. One note......as this is the oldest structure on the south rim and it does have a sign stating so, if you do not lock the screen door people will walk in not realizing that it is not a museum display :-)

Got a great deal from the tourist office. Cabin is cosy and situated 10 steps from the rim edge. Plenty of tourists trying to peek in but not a big problem. Nice log fire and big bed, great for couples.

Katy B asked a question June 2020
Is this room pet friendly?
Answer from Duoadrift
Washington DC, District of Columbia187 contributions70 helpful votes
No, absolutely not - why would you even want to do that to future guests. I get it if there are 10 rooms, and 3 are pet friendly...but this is one historic spot, one (SINGLE) cabin for us all to share - should all future guests (some highly allergic to pets) be denied its use because someone wants to bring a dog. Not to mention, some people allow their dogs on the bed, couch and have dirty pets.... No. it is not, nor should it be. P.S. Thanks for asking.

"If you want a room on the rim there are several to choose from between the Bright Angel, Thunderbird and El Tovar hotels. You just need to check with Xanterra (the concessionaire) and make sure you get the right one. However, there is only Bucky O'Neil suite in the world if you are looking for a one-in-a-lifetime stay."
