Spent 2 nights here end of June 2020 during Covid. Was really dreading this stay after seeing the online pictures and reading the reviews, especially since we tend to prefer high end hotels. However, we were pleasantly surprised! The rooms were much more updated than the dark pictures make it look. Bathrooms were just fine. Kind of reminded of the quality of a Hampton Inn in terms of bed/bath, but walls felt like dorm room. Great location at the rim of the canyon. With covid, there was plenty of parking everywhere including just outside our room and when we woke in the morning there were maybe 5 people out at the rim enjoying the view. Pretty great.
Was very concerned about swamp coolers during 100 degree weather, as we're from CA and know how little those actually do vs traditional AC. Again we were pleasantly surprised and the room stayed wonderfully cool. BIG caveat - the swamp cooler turned off at night when you stopped moving around and this was super annoying as we like it cool at night and my spouse had to keep triggering it everytime we wanted it activated. Annoying! Of course, to stay in the park your options are limited and this lodge is literally on the edge of the canyon so location is awesome. During covid there's very little food available (good coffee only at a shop outside another lodge we had to drive to) so recommend bringing in a cooler with some snacks or knowing that you'll have to go out into the town for dinner. Also, the housekeepers don't seem sure what to do with the compost trash when you ask. Kind of gross to have to keep compost trash in your room for a couple days without someone taking it for you. Beware that there are lots of steps inside. We were on ground floor but you go up 3 steps, walk a few yards then down 3 steps then walk several yards, etc. Don't think I need to return to Grand Canyon so probably won't stay here again, but would recommend it to others wanting to take the trip.

We stayed at The Thunderbird for one night as we wanted to experience an evening and morning at the Grand Canyon and one of the essentials for our choice of accommodation was location, which The Thunderbird most certainly delivers on, being right on the South rim and only a few footsteps away from the edge. We knew in advance that our room was on the side of the building facing away from the rim, so that wasn’t a problem, all we wanted was not to have to have a long walk to the rim.

So, the above is really the highlight. As many others have noted, yes, the hotel does have a dated feel of late 70s early 80s, but it is clean and didn’t appear be rundown or in need of repairs in any way, just simply dated. Check in is at the hotel next door, The Bright Angel Lodge, with The Thunderbird essentially being simply an accommodation block as it doesn’t have any other facilities or functions other than accommodation rooms.

Parking for us was fine and easy outside the Bright Angel and there are bays around The Thunderbird, but I have no problem imagining that finding a space could prove difficult at peak times.

Breakfast? Nope, that wasn’t included in the price…..and talking of the price, our rate was £210 for one night in a standard room that was not facing the rim. To put that in to perspective, following this stop off we stayed at Paris in Las Vegas that was cheaper than this rate!!!

So back to the start. It’s all about location and let’s face it, if you are coming to the Grand Canyon you are there for the views and the outdoors, not hanging around in a hotel room. The bus service, rim, restaurants, parking, etc are all very close by and that is what you are paying for.

Had a really great stay at the Thunderbird Lodge, having been lucky enough to a secure a room last minute. Normally, as with the other lodges on the southern rim, it sells out months in advance. The price was also not excessive, and even slightly lower than comparable hotels in Tusayan, 20 minutes drive away from the canyon.

The Lodge is situated right on the canyon rim. Even if you aren’t lucky to have a canyon view room, you are literally a dozen steps away from this natural wonder. You can easily enjoy the canyon at sunrise, sunset or even during the night (the stars are amazing) and the historical Bright Angel and El Tovar Lodges are close by and accessible for meals and drinks.

Externally the lodge is an unattractive concrete block, but inside the rooms are large, bright and nicely furnished. Beds were excellent, the bathroom was immaculate and the usual amenities like fridge, coffee make, iron etc were all there.

The hard working house keeping team were happy to clean rooms daily or provide additional amenities and supplies.

There is no restaurant here, but you can eat at Bright Angel next door and there are vending machines. Car parking is available right next to the building and I could always find a space. Highly recommended.

I read the reviews describing the 70s decor and small rooms. I still wanted the view so I kept to plan. The rate I got was $325 a night. My email sent to me by Expedia said 3pm. When we tried to check in at that time they clerk said between 3 and 4. We finally got check in at 4:30. I understand extra cleaning is necessary but that information could be sent a head of time. They had already sent me an email regarding no extra pillows, towells, pens and paper and the coffee machine??? being taken out of the room even though they were all available at the last 2 hotels we had stay in AZ during this trip. The price wasn't worth it but I had to experience it myself. The breakfast at the Tovar was great and reasonable but coffee addicts beware no coffee available until 7am when the Tovar and the food court open up.

Obviously the franchise owner could care less about this place. Actually, it’s not only this hotel but that’s what the review is about. Bare minimum of a room severely overpriced for a start. Our key stopped working after day one of our scheduled three day stay. Knucklehead at the desk told me it was because our keys must have come into contact with a phone or credit card which somehow erased all the information on our room key. Nobody carries a phone or credit cards right. Uh huh, sure that must be it. Our room had an adjoining door. If you do decide to stay here do not allow yourself to be in a room with an adjoining door. I would have sworn our neighbors were in our room as we heard everything they said and all their phone calls as an extra special bonus. They will not make up your room unless you make a point to ask them to do it when you check in. Reason? They say valuable resources are being conserved. That’s funny as the Williams to Grand Canyon train sat idling for multiple hours opposite the hotel. Smelled great and I’m sure saved valuable resources. Had trouble with our heating unit. Two guys came up to look at the thermostat and exclaimed that they had never seen one of that type before. It was a baseboard heater. Well, it was one thing after another after another at the Thunderbird. You couldn’t pay me to stay in this dump again. I guess the Park Service doesn’t care what goes on or who runs the concessions as long as they get paid.

I hate to write a poor review. The only thing going for the Lodges is the location. We are a camping family with realistic expectations. The lodges were dated and dingy, comfy beds and lots of hot water, however! And the team did a great job of snow removal. The fact that the Lodges cannot figure a way to have a microwave anywhere on the premises when the restaurants close early and/or are closed due to Covid makes it a really rough time. The idea of paying a premium is to park the car and enjoy the stay without driving. I will, unfortunately, recommend to people to stay anywhere by Xanterra and I will not make reservations at the locations at other National Parks based upon this previous stay.

The Thunderbird Lodge is a great location to stay if you plan to hike the Bright Angel Trail or the South Rim Trail. It was unbelievable that we were just steps from the South Rim. The prices are a little expensive but in terms of convenience you can’t beat it. I wish there were more places to eat near the lodge but a lot was closed because of Covid-19. Everything is expensive here so plan accordingly. I would definitely stay here again. The room was very clean and comfortable but there really aren’t any amenities here. You are paying for the convenience of being so close to the South Rim.

My husband and I stayed two nights in late Sept. We booked this lodge to be in the park and had low expectations regarding the quality of the room, but were pleasantly surprised. It was clean and reasonably updated, had a comfy bed and pillows, and everything else we needed. We had a canyon facing room and we wouldn't do this again as there is no balcony and you really need to stand up in your room to look out the window, over a roof to the canyon beyond. This wasn't a problem for us because we were rarely in the room, but others may be disappointed.
Staying in the park and being literally steps to the rim were amazing - and such a time saver! We were able to catch the hikers' express shuttle right out our door at 7 a.m. without getting up at the crack of dawn to drive to the park.
Finding food in the park was a bit challenging during the COVID related staff shortages, but it worked out fine. We had very good dinners both nights at the Fred Harvey Tavern in the Bright Angel Lodge and there were plenty of lunch options at the Market Plaza.
Four stars instead of five because there is no counterspace in the bathroom and we had to wait a long time for our room to be ready past check-in time. However, we would still stay at Thunderbird again because the location was awesome!

We stayed here over spring break, a family of five, with three teenage boys ages 16, 17, and 17. The room itself only sleeps for people in queen beds, but we brought a blowup bed for our fifth person. Even with the blowup bed, we found plenty of Space inside of the room. It was your typical hotel sized room. Plenty of hot water. The mini refrigerator was very nice. As others have mentioned, it would be nice to have a microwave in the room, but it was not a dealbreaker for us. Maybe they could have a microwave that someone could access somewhere along the floor or in the entryway? Just a thought?

We found it nice to have an extra bathroom down the hallway, one that was I communal bathroom on the floor. Just since we had so many people in our room. It was very clean, and had extra sink space when our shower was occupied.

The location is perfect. We did not pay the extra dollars for the Rimview, as we spent most of our time outside anyways. Although they described this as a basic motel, we found little touches to be very nice. Some of the decorations in the bathroom with animal tiles were very nice. There were plenty of towels. Everything was exceptionally clean. They even had a TV in the room, although it was not great reception, it was a pleasant surprise.

Parking can be difficult since it is the Grand Canyon, but if you wait a few minutes, a spot will open up near the hotel. The Wi-Fi was pretty good at this location as well.

The access to the bright angel and alto bar larges is also wonderful. Very easy walk in either direction for great dining, shopping, or just enjoying the views of the canyon.

We stayed for two nights, and one of the nights some mule deer came right up outside of our window. Kind of nice to see that much nature so close.

We have stayed at many Xanterra properties, and would definitely stay here again.

We decided to book a get away here on a whim for Valentines day. The park was cold and air was crisp - the hotel room was warm and the views of the canyon were stunning. We got to see snow fall & melt, all in two days. There are shops nearby to get coffee and food, plenty of modern amenities in the middle of a historic location. I've visited the canyon previously and stayed outside of the park and I can say with certainty, the convenience of being inside of the park is worth the additional hotel room rates if you can swing it.

Yes as mentioned above, there is a pod coffee maker in the rooms. We were there mid March, there was more options to eat than I thought there would be. Although by all of the post that I had read prior to our trip, I was afraid we would never find breakfast so we bought breakfast bars and had some bread and peanut butter in our room along with some snacks. There is a small refrigerator is the room. Also, we bought some lunch meat, Mayo/mustard and chips that I put in sandwich bags and made a lunch that we would take with us when we went out. I hope you have a lovely trip!!!
