Jerry is an excellent resource of the rain forest and Aaron took us kayaking observing a tree hosting over 100 symbiotic plant species as well as fresh water eels. Bring the Deet and rain gear. The property is about 45 minutes south of Fox glacier.

Everything about this lodge - the food (delicious), the dining area seating arrangement (make new friends), the bedrooms, the grounds, the lake and river and the forest that surrounds it all - spectacular! The staff were great and hospitable and the chances to learn about the flora and fauna of there area were true highlights of this trip.

Wilderness Lodge Lake Moeraki is an exceptional place to stay. It's close to the river, as well as the ocean, and offers fun things to do no matter if it is pouring rain, (which it did while we were there), or when the sun is shining, (which it did also). The owners, Anne and Dr. Gerry McSweeny have worked hard...

This Lodge is one of the best places I've ever been. The team and stuff is very friendly. You will not miss Internet or TV a second a day. Free tours are very nice. But payed tour with Gerry was really worth it's money. The lake is very nice for kajaking and the rainforest is just beautiful! Not cheap, but...

Luxury eco resort with beautiful rooms, top food and service. Lounge with fireplace and beautiful books was cosy and relaxing on a grey day. Kayaking on the lake in the mist was really pretty - wished we could have ridden the river rapids. Walk out to the beach (30 mins) through the ferny forest to see seals and if you're...

Anne and Gerry looked after us so well. Everything was just brilliant. The food, the room and all the guided activities. My main aim here was to see the Fiordland Penguin and so we booked the 3 night Spring special package. Gerry took us down to a secret location and we spent 2 hours with the penguins. A truly magical...

My husband and I recently stayed at the Lake Wilderness Lodge. This had come highly recommended by our travel agent but I was unprepared for the amazing experience of seeing (really seeing with Gerry's help) the tropical rain forests, beaches and Fiordland Yellow Crested penguins (we saw 11!). The rooms were nice with incredible views and the food was good,...

Me and my partner took the tawaki penguin guided walk with this amazing company. We had the best time experiencing these amazing creatures, it has to be one of my best wildlife tours in the world. The highlight of the trip has to be gerri the guide, the work he has done and is still involved in is unbelievable and...

There really aren't enough words to describe how wonderful our stay at Lake Moeraki Wilderness Lodge was - it was just magical! My husband and I stayed for two nights in early September and had just the most wonderful couple of days. It was absolutely the highlight of our trip and we would highly recommend anyone to stay in this...

Thanks Mark and Sandy for your very kind words. We really enjoy sharing our lovely wilderness with enthusiastic guests such as yourselves. Our Spring (September to early December) is a particularly exciting time to come to Lake Moeraki. You saw the Tawaki penguins up close, the second rarest of the world's18 penguin species. They are only here until December 5....

My daughter and I stayed one night during a week in the deep south while I was researching the history of the NZ conservation movement for an upcoming book. This was the best accommodation by far on the trip. Gerry is a legend in the movement and I had been urged to visit him and the lodge by other interviewees...

Tawaki, Owner at Wilderness Lodge Lake Moeraki, responded to this review

Thanks Chris for your kind words and historical perspective. Although for our visitors the most important aspect is that they enjoy lovely accommodations, food, wine and adventures and great company, we like to think the most important aspect to the Wilderness Lodge is the protection of landscape and wildlife. If you come back here in 5, 10 or 20 years...
