The New (Shin) Takanawa Prince Hotel was designed by Togo Murano, one of Japan's leading architects. Every one of his design concepts from the exterior of the grand banquet halls to the restaurant interiors to the handpicked furnishings all harmonize beautifully, despite their different functions. This is the largest hotel in the Takanawa complex and it is a monument to individuality, décor and functionality. Like its other two counterparts, the New Takanawa Prince sits majestically on the beautifully landscaped grounds of a 10-acre Japanese garden.

We picked this hotel because it’s walking distance to Shinagawa station which is convenient for getting to Haneda airport and taking the Shinkansen train. We had two separate stays in a week - before and after our trip to Kyoto. The first time our room was on the 12th floor, good view and renovated and we were very happy with it. The second time we were on the 3rd floor and the room was considerably more dated and configuration was odd - no drawers, closet didn’t have doors. But otherwise room was spotless, beds comfortable.

Bathroom had big tub, good water pressure and scented bath salts, hair brush, shower scrub towel, razor, toothbrush and toiletries provided. No body lotion.

Room had thermal water kettle, tea bags and instant coffee, complimentary water bottles.

We booked with the breakfast buffet which was pricey but excellent for both western and Japanese options. There’s a 7-11 downstairs which is very convenient. The hotel was fairly empty when we stayed no doubt because of the coronavirus and all the staff had masks. Not sure how crowded it gets normally.
Overall would stay again but try to get a renovated room.

It has been 5 years since I wrote my last review for Grand Prince Shin Takanawa. My review is due for an update especially since it is my first stay since C19 restrictions were lifted in Japan.

I usually stay at the hotel at the beginning and the end of my trip. This allows me to store my extra pieces of luggage at the hotel and travel around the rest of Japan with smaller pieces of luggage.

The hotel looks the same with the spacious lobby and convenient access to Shinagawa Station. There is a lot of construction going on at both the station and the area right across from the station that used to be occupied by Shinagawa Goos. This has two main effects. The first is that there are more trucks and noise in the area although you won't hear it from the hotel. The second is that the number of eateries around the area has gone down drastically due to the station construction. The little ramen area off to the side of the station is no longer there which makes late night eating very inconvenient.

All of the services are still there and the staff is as friendly and professional as ever. Check-in was fast and the staff speaks English well enough to assist. The rooms are still the biggest I have stayed in when in Japan but is starting to look a bit tired. There hasn't been any updates since the last time I stayed there in 2019. However, it is still a well appointed room. I noticed a few changes. One of which is daily housekeeping which used to be optional (every 2 or 3 days instead) which is probably a C19 measure. The other thing is that they do give you 2 bottles of water each day with housekeeping.

As I was staying for 5 days this time, I noticed that the walk up the hill is a lot more tiring than before. The last hotel shuttle leaving Shinagawa Station is at 9:20 pm which is pretty early. It guarantees that you will be walking up the hill at the end of dinner every night unless you have an early dinner.

Grand Prince New Takanawa is a little older but still retains a lot of the benefits and services that keeps me going back.

My family stayed in a triple room for 9 nights. Originally booked for 8 nights, but ANA canceled our return tickets for some unknown reason, so we had to stay an extra night. The hotel graciously extended our stay for one night, which was quite nice and alleviated some of the stress we had from our unexpected flight change. The room was large by Japanese standards - accomodated 3 beds and a small sofa. We also had a balcony that overlooked the very nice garden area. Our room looked a bit older, but everything was clean and in good working condition (except the small safe, but we didn't feel the need for one). One thing that I thougth was slightly odd (but perhaps is standard in Japan) is that after a few nights and the room cost reached JPY100,000, I was asked to settle my account. We didn't spend much time in the room, but when we returned each evening the room was cleaned, with fresh towels, bottled water, and replentished coffee service. Shinagawa station was close enough to walk, even with our luggage. The buffet breakfast in the adjacent Prince Hotel was decent but we felt a bit overpriced. So overall, the room was a good value for the price and we enjoyed our stay.

We stayed at this hotel for four nights in total. The first room they put us in was small, and needed to be renovated. We asked for an upgrade for the next two nights, which was given to us at the price of 2000 yen per night, which was reasonable. The upgraded rooms, while better than the first one, needed refurbishment and some cleaning. The carpets in the hallways leading to the rooms definitely need replacement. We stayed on the 3rd, 8th, and 9th floors. This is a consistent need in the corridors.

The breakfast buffet is very good. Nice selection of choices, both western and Japanese. The coffee was excellent. The staff in the restaurant were accommodating and pleasant.

When we checked out for the second time (we stayed two different times), the hotel staff charged us for a late check out (9000 yen), even though we had an itinerary that stated we had paid for a ‘guaranteed late checkout’. This was something we debated with the check in staff person and the manager, and we believed it was all taken care of. Upon check out, however, they charged us the 9000 yen. Had we known that, we would have checked out on time, and left our luggage with the bell desk. It seemed like a ‘bait and switch’ to us.

The location of the hotel is very convenient to the Shinagawa station. There are several other hotels in the near vicinity. If we go back to Tokyo, we will look at other options to the Grand Prince shin Takanawa.

Arrived by car around 8pm, and was worried because the parking lot was almost full. When I arrived at the entrance from the parking lot, an attendant came running to me, took my luggage, and guided me to the front desk. The front desk was spacious and there were several attendants, and it was my turn soon.
The woman who checked me in was smiling and quickly guided me through the parking lot procedure and the breakfast service for platinum members, which I liked.
The lobby was luxurious and spacious with many sofas, which I think is good because many hotels these days don't have many sofas in the lobby.
The superior room on the 7th floor was renovated and I liked the color scheme.
There were disposable slippers, a safety deposit box, an iron, a kettle, etc., and a toothbrush, razor, and brush in the bathroom. Shampoo was in a large bottle. Since it was a superior room, there was no Nespresso machine like other Prince hotels. You have to go for deluxe or above. There were two bottles of water.
We had dinner at the Italian restaurant in Sakura Tower. The last online reservation was at 7:30pm, so we called to inquire, but we wish they would accept phone reservations instead of just online reservations. The Italian restaurant had a nice atmosphere and seemed reasonably priced.
For breakfast, we went to the buffet restaurant at the Takanawa Prince Hotel where we were staying, but when we got there at 8:30am, there were 20 people in line at the rush hour. There was a notice that Diamond members were given priority, but we waited in line thinking that it would have been nice if they gave priority to Gold members and above like Hilton does.
For breakfast, there was a Japanese and Western food corner, and more than half of the customers were from overseas, choosing their own breakfast dishes to suit their tastes, which was interesting and showed the national character of each country. The restaurant had a bright atmosphere and the food was delicious, but the Japanese food in particular was substantial, with udon, mentaiko, and natto. Coffee was available to take home in paper cups.
Overall, it's a large, old hotel, but it's been renovated and has a luxurious feel. You can use the many restaurants in the three hotels, Shin Takanawa, Takanawa, and Sakura Tower, and you can get discounts for guests and members, so it's fun to choose from. It's a great hotel.
There are events in Shinagawa this fall, so I've already made a reservation at Takanawa Prince.

It is one of three hotels with a large and tranquil Japanese garden within walking distance of Shinagawa Station (there is also a shuttle bus).
The current official names are Grand Prince Hotel Takanawa, Grand Prince Hotel New Takanawa, The Prince Sakura Tower Tokyo, and Takanawa Hanakohro (in Takanawa), and this time I stayed at Grand Prince New Takanawa.
This is a nostalgic hotel that I used to stay at often when there were only two buildings, Takanawa and New Takanawa Prince.
Even after decades, the lobby area and restaurant have been updated and are elegant.
The service from the front desk lady at check-in was average.
The early check-in time was not communicated correctly, and it did not have the hospitality image of a 4- or 5-star hotel. (To be honest, it was a bit scary. My husband, who does not speak Japanese, had the same impression.)

This time, I booked a room with a club lounge.
The famous white balcony is the same as it was in the past in a good way, but the bathroom is almost the same as it was in the bad way. The sink area has been updated, but I think the bathtub is the same as it was in the past.
However, the rooms are spacious enough, all amenities are provided, and you can use the other two lounges, so it's good value for money.

Cafe time starts at 2:00 and 2:30pm, when snacks and sweets are lined up.
Cocktail time starts at 5pm, when wine and hard liquor aperitifs and appetizers are lined up.
Sakura Tower has Western-style.
Takanawa has Japanese-style.
Shin Takanawa has Chinese-style.
Each hotel offers something different, so it's fun to hop around.
The guests staying at the hotel also go around the lounges, so many of them become familiar faces.
One thing that was disappointing about the lounge was that everything was cold appetizers, and there was nothing hot.
It's not a buffet table, so it's disappointing to see cheap carbohydrates like pasta, potatoes, and pilaf lined up, but it would have been nice if they had soup or hot fried foods.

Recommendation level:
If you're in Tokyo for sightseeing and are pressed for time, Shinagawa Prince is more conveniently located in front of the station, even though they are both Prince Hotels.
However, there is a shuttle bus to the Grand Takanawa area three times an hour, so if you time it right, it's not a problem and you can enjoy the elegance of a Japanese garden in Tokyo.

Well located in Shinagawa, it allows for easy access to JR lines snd shinkansehn. Recommend taking a taxi if you have luggage as it’s an uphill hike to the hotel.
Our room was spacious, though outdated.
The fees to access the pool are ridiculous. On a weekday it is ¥5000 for an adult and ¥3000 for a child plus ¥3000 to hire a deck chair.
The garden is lovely and when we stayed there was a night light installation which was gorgeous.
We were able to leave our luggage after checking out due to a late flight. The lobby is beautiful and a nice place to relax. The restaurants were expensive so we took advantage of the eateries in the nearby Shinagawa Prince complex - En Washoku was a highlight and the bakery at Aux Bacchanale was reasonably priced.

It is advertised as a 4 star hotel with zero focus on cleanliness.
The carpets (in the room & outside) would not have been vacuum cleaned in years. First room was so fithy that our room had to be changed to a slightly better room.
But very loud noise of trains passing by almost every few seconds makes it almost impossible to have sound sleep.
I am told their other hotel (Shinagawa Prince Hotel) is much better.

Hotel room was dated, bed frame damaged, carpet and couch looked dirty. Bathroom like those in a motel in the 60’s. No body lotion in bathroom, tried to leave a note (in both Japanese and English) asking housekeeping to give body lotion when make up my room, no response. Ended up have to call housekeeping to bring one to me. Breakfast arrangement was funny. Lots of empty tables in the cafe but still asked guests to line up and scan the code to register first and comeback later.

Hotel is nice but very old. Rooms have no closet no drawer showers have plastic curtains😳😳 gym is a joke with only 3 treadmills. I was told to go to another hotel to use their GYM and SPA they wanted to charge me over 60$ for one time use. They need to do a lot to call themselves a 4 star hotel. By the way every morning that we want to use the buffet we have to wait for more than 15 minutes to get in.
