Toy wholesale store “Mitsuwaya” founded in 1935 was reborn as a backpackers hostel in 2016. Even our hostel located in Kawarayamachi is heart of city in Osaka, though we can see temples and shrines, a traditional Japanese shopping arcade around our hostel. Enjoy such a special location and traditional warm atmosphere!

It was very clean, and the bathroom, which tends to get dirty, was clean and I didn't feel uncomfortable. This time I stayed in a quadruple room. The upper bunk had a high ceiling so there was a lot of space, and it was very convenient to have lockers. However, when taking things in and out, the lid would fall over if you didn't hold it down with your hand, so I wish there was something to secure the lid in place. There was still plenty of space even with my backpack and handbag inside, and I had a padlock so I used mine. In the shared space, I was able to use the shower, toilet, and sink that other guests use without it being crowded.
Breakfast was complimentary, which was very much appreciated.

Nice hostel and a good location. The hostel had a nice spot in the lobby to hang out with tables and bean bag chairs and we were able to meet and talk with other people staying there. They also provided coffee, tea and toast in the morning. Towel rental and locks for luggage are not included so make sure to bring your own. You also have to make your bed and we both found it very hard to do so especially being on the top bunk bed.

One of the best experiences of staying in a shared space in Osaka. Very neat & clean, and well kept. The living area offers multiple options to sit and work, or just relax on a beanbag. Toilets, showers, kitchen and beds were so tidy and odorless. The hosts at the front desk were very welcoming and helpful. The bunk bed space was good, offering a reading light, charging sockets and a small space to put stuff next to you. The rooftop idea is unique for such a place. Very appealing!

The inn itself is still new, so the interior was beautiful and you could feel the warmth of wood.
However, there are a few things that bother me:
●When I went to leave my luggage in the morning, there was no staff at the reception desk, and no one came even though I called out to them several times, and there was no doorbell or bell. I called them even though they were right in front of me, and they finally came...
Maybe they were busy, but I thought it was strange that there was no one there.
●The built-in ladder, which is common with bunk beds, was difficult to climb. I wondered what it was for, maybe it was to put a suitcase, but I couldn't lift it... Also, the light bulbs were too dim

It was alright. The hostel was smaller than expected from the pictures shown online, but otherwise clean, and helpful staff who can speak English. I personality felt it was a bit pricey for the amenities offered. It was in central Osaka but still a bit of a walk (10-15 mins or so) to the nearest train station or sightseeing spots.

The rooms are clean and the staff are friendly. It's a bit far from Dotonbori, but it's close enough to walk to. The shower room and toilet are well maintained. The interior is also quite pretty. None of the guests I stayed with made me feel uncomfortable, so it was comfortable and nice. The neighborhood atmosphere is comfortable and quiet, making it a great place to relax and feel at peace. Next time I go to Osaka, I think I will consider it.

This hostel was a very nice place to stay! The staff was very welcoming and freindly, and went out of their way to help even with simple things like sushi recommendations. As well, they went the further step and called locations to ensure they were open that day.
I also really enjoyed the 2 story layout because everything was closer together and felt more cozy. I believe that having things close together made it easier to chat and meet new people. As well, the wooden architecture gave a nice, relaxing feel in addition to the quiet neighborhood.
I would definitely stay here again!

Staff were welcoming. They made takoyaki and okonomiyaki for everyone on new year's eve.
Slight inconvenience that the dorm doors requires a number pin to enter. I'd rather have a card to tap and enter the dorms.

It was great, but there was one disappointing thing.
When I was putting food in the fridge, I was supposed to write my name and check-out date, but I misunderstood and wrote it as the check-in date instead.
And it was thrown away the next day.
Since I had written my name on it, I wish they had checked it a bit before throwing it away. They said they couldn't take responsibility if someone else took it.

Mitsuwaya was easily the best hostel I stayed at during my trip to Japan. This included hostels in Tokyo, Kyoto and Hiroshima. Mitsuwaya had by far the friendliest staff (special mention goes to Yuka and Shuhei!), the biggest capsules and the cleanest, and was in an overall great location. About a 15 minute walk from the main Dotonbori area! My only regret was that I did not stay longer!

"Get your bike rental key as soon as you can, even if you aren't sure you'll need it. You will. Limited quantity and they are rented for 24 hours, ask to pay for full stay. "
