This place is such a hidden gem. Len (the host) is friendly and knowledgeable. The highlight is the animals. We saw platypus in the evening with Len, but also the next day when exploring the river by ourselves. Pademelons and Tasmanian Devils outside your cabin, birds galore, plus lizards and fish. The kids enjoyed exploring around the river and cabins, being able to go into the bush or sit on the soft lush grass. We hiked the nearby Leven canyon to the Devils elbow, as well as the private walk on the property itself. Our room was clean and well equipped, a full kitchen meant cooking was easy unlike many accommodation spots. It was summer so we didn't light the fire, but wish it had been colder because it looked so inviting. An added bonus is the use of the laundry at no cost. We're already planning to come back for a longer stay, two nights just wasn't enough.

When we first arrived at our cabin with the host, we were told to 'wipe your feet' before entering our accommodation! That's the accommodation we'd actually paid to be in. While unpacking we found one and then a second drawer that fell to bits while we were trying to put our clothes away. There's a dearth of power points; there was a powerboard but not all of the sockets worked. A never-ending leaking tap in the bathroom wastes a lot of water - when we pointed this out (just in case they didn't know) they said they'd tried to fix it. Well, clearly fixing it requires new taps not just a new washer. There is no wardrobe, just two coat hangers. Nowhere to put your suitcase while you pack or unpack. All of the knives in the kitchen were so dull we couldn't cut anything and bought our own knife as we were there for 6 days. Each night one of the hosts comes around (about 9.30 pm) and puts out lots of chicken wings in front of each occupied cabin to attract the wildlife (mainly devils). However, what we didn't know (and weren't told upfront) is that they usually don't appear until well after midnight - we just couldn't stay up that late. The next morning there are often pieces left over, some of which are cleared up by the kookaburras and currawongs but they also attract a lot of flies, and we mean a LOT of flies, such that if you wanted to sit out on the cabin verandah, there was a constant background drone all the time. This is a very low tech stay with no TV or radio. There was no cling film or foil supplied in the kitchen, so again we had to buy our own, and no salt. The front verandah had several boards that are not secure and could cause a trip hazard. Good things: we were greeted with free port and chocolates; there were some basic condiments and a tiny pack of milk; plenty of towels; free platypus walk every night; free limitless wifi. The best thing was the location - absolutely stunning, mountains, a river, a forest walk all on your doorstep and far away from many other humans. At night there are many pademelons that browse on the grass in front of the cabins - they're very cute and you can view them from the comfort of your cabin, through the glass front door. Lots of other wildlife in the area including echidnas, possums, platypus, snakes, currawongs, kookaburras. The cabins need a serious upgrade but the location is stunning. FYI it's about a 2 hr drive from Launceston. The nearest shops are about an hour drive away in Ulverstone, so come prepared.

This is an excellent and unique experience to see Tasmanian Devils on the wild. There are no guarantees with nature but we got lucky. We were there two nights through Tasmanian Odyssey and Inala tours. Both excellent tour operators. We were very fortunate to see the devils on the second night along with brushtail possums. The owners are extremely nice and make you feel welcome with a great home cooked dinner. We’ve done extensive nature travel in many parts of the world and this was one of the most memorable.

Stayed one night with our birding group in November and fell in love with this place. Absolutely beautiful location in the woods, with several extremely well-appointed cabins/bungalows designed for the nature lover. I only saw my cabin but assume all are essentially the same. It has a large open space with a queen bed and two bunk beds so you can sleep a family of 4, kitchenette, bath, and lovely fireplace with a sofa and comfortable easy chairs for relaxing. The front of the cabins are mostly windows, which allows you to turn the lights out in side and watch the nocturnal activities right outside your cabin. The proprietors were lovely people, making sure we had a great - albeit brief – stay. The dinner they served was delicious (no menu, family style) and they dropped some seed and other food to attract the night activity outside each cabin. Pademelons, Opossums, and even a Tasmanian Devil, showed up overnight to feed – and be quietly observed from the comfort of the cabins. In the morning, for birders, a slow walk around the property was lovely and productive. Cannot say enough how much I loved this place. I hope if I’m ever back in Tasmania again, I can stay here for a longer spell.

My friend and I stayed 2 nights at Mountain Valley Wilderness Holidays. It was perfect for being self-sufficient - we'd arrived with our groceries, and the kitchen had a gas stove, oven, fridge, frypan etc, plus even condiments like oil and tomato sauce which I hadn't thought of. Having the washer and dryer was a wonderful service for mid-way through our trip, and that it was free was so generous. Len was so helpful throughout - with the cabin introduction, and guidance for the night time viewing routine. We joined Len and two other guests on our first afternoon for a stroll to the river, and on our second afternoon Len showed us the glow worm cave. He was patient with my hesitation about going in the cave, and was kind enough to loan us a red-light head torch, and gumboots to wear into the cave. We saw pademelons, brush tailed possums, and a southern boobok across our 2 viewing nights. Unfortunately, the spotted quolls had recently stopped visiting (Len doesn't know why), and we didn't see Tassie Devils on either night (Len thinks that because they'd only recently started returning in September after a two month break in July and August, they were unsettled / frightened away because other guests were out walking around at night). Would happily stay there again.

Exactly what we had expected and hoped for. Simple but comfortable accommodation. A quaint little cabin, open fire, basic but had the essentials. Len was really accommodating and helpful in ensuring our family (2a+2c) enjoyed the location and wildlife. There was plenty to see even for our 3yr old. We did see Tassie Devils in the wild! A highlight of our trip to TAS. Pademelons everywhere. Great birds locally. A very pleasant stay.

Very much enjoyed staying in this log cabin and staying up to try and watch some devils and quolls. The owners are very helpful and the cabin was spotless and better than expected. Platypus viewing in the evening was distant, but recognisable. We saw devils on 2 nights and our daughter spotted a quoll. Excellent group Bbq area.

Not a bad spot to take a rest night. Len is very knowledgeable of the local area. They have a free laundry which is handy but no food available. No mobile service in this remote valley. Recommend the Paddys lake walk

Just spent two nights at Mountain Valley Wilderness Holidays, Loongana. What an amazing experience! Len was so welcoming, friendly & knowledgeable. Nothing was too much trouble, including spending an hour and a half with us, spotting platypuses. Our self-contained cabin was rustic & charming, with everything we needed for our self-catered stay (no food/facilities nearby). The bed & bedding was very comfortable. Haven't slept that well in ages, it was so peaceful & tranquil. The location is very remote, as expected, with no mobile phone reception or internet, which was a welcome relief from the normal, never-ending demands of modern life. So many lovely walks and so much beauty to enjoy both on site or a short drive away. No TV, but who needs it with the best show on earth starting as soon as the sun goes down! Pademelons, Spotted Quolls, Brush Tailed Possums & Tassie Devils right outside your door, every night! Check-out isn't until 12 noon, a nod to Len's understanding that guests often spend most, if not all night, watching the nocturnal goings-on of local wildlife. We will definitely be staying, again. Highly recommended.

We loved our stay here. Len’s a huge source of knowledge and was very accommodating. It’s a beautiful sanctuary, with some lovely hikes nearby. We saw devils, spotted quolls, pademelons and possums every night. Really enjoyed our cabin which was extremely cosy and warm. Look forward to visiting again one day soon!
