There is an exchange bank at the airport and also at the hotel. You can use Canadian dollars ($5/$10 bills) to buy beer on the bus and for tips. Once you're at the resort, the bank opens fairly early - sign is posted at the bank, down a hall on the right just past the reception area. They were fantastic. Easily exchanged our Canadian currency a few times.
There are umbrellas around the pool, which depending on the number of guests can be taken early in the morning. In July, it should not be a problem as it is not the high season. Lots of shade on the beach.
