The lake is truly beautiful but the location is quite touristy. Solution: a high floor suite at The Lalu.

Beautifully designed, the property does not show its almost 20 years and the views from the suites are unbeatable.

Only question mark is about dining options (including also breakfast, where amongst others service was not so good): they are just not up to the standards met in other premium venues across Taiwan.

The location of the Lalu offers outstanding views of Sun Moon lake, arguably the best views of any hotel or indeed any location in the area. There is also an infinity pool which faces the lake, but the views are particularly good from the lobby and the lobby bar as well as from the lakeview rooms. The views in general is clearly the best part of the hotel. Of course the hotel itself is also very well designed and luxurious, with use of wood and Chinese-style architectural features and decor such as Chinese style chairs and tables. Kerry Hill is the architect and I find the style quite appealing as it is luxurious while also being low-key. Also, the hotel is located close to various nature trails that allow you to take in the lake from different vantage points. Most people, it seems, either ride bikes or drive their own cars from the hotel, as there is no free shuttle provided around the various sights in the lake (I think there is a paid tour but I skipped it). You can take public buses and shuttles but the schedules are kind of erratic and most of them do not stop at the hotel, I think. In the end I decided to just walk around the lake myself. The breakfast is also pretty good, a buffet style with Western and Chinese dishes. The sauna/spa area is pretty well equipped as well. Service is prompt and professional (I corresponded with the staff in Chinese). Overall a very pleasant and unique experience. But I will say that if it was cloudy and raining during my trip, it would have not been as enjoyable, fortunately I came at a good time right before a typhoon struck the area. It is alsoexpensive, especially by Taiwan standards, but I think it is unique and it is definitely the best hotel in the lake. Also it has historical significance as it used to be frequented by Chiang Kai-shek.

Dear justinkS9400PT: We really appreciate that you enjoyed the best view of the Sun Moon Lake from our lobby, lobby bar, as well as from our infinite pool. We are proud to say that the architect, Kerry Hill, was willing to design the hotel for us because of being touched by the same scene as you saw. No matter it is rainy, clouded, or sunny, the mountains, the lakes, and the Xuanguang Temple are playing hide-and-seek with clouds. It is glad that you tried and loved our SPA, located at the spot where you can over-looking the Sun Moon Lake and immerse yourself in the skilled and professional aromatherapy and the sauna facility. Our fusion breakfast with Western, Chinese, and Japanese style provides variety of choices, guests can always find their favorite dishes. Furthermore, some dishes have their interesting stories related to the former President, Chiang Kai-shek. With the best view of the lakes and mountains and the trendy cuisine concept of buying food from local farmers and markets, we do love to create unforgettable memories for our guests. Thank you again for sharing your experience, it is the best motivation for us to maintain our quality and enthusiasm. We are looking forward to seeing you soon. The Lalu Sun Moon Lake

The first impression when entering the hotel was "wow". Aesthetic Japanese style architecture with a great view of sun moon lake. The bar and reception also have a beautiful lake view. The staff speaks excellent English and is very friendly and helpful. Upon entering our suite with lake view we also said wow. Great styling, spacious room layout, large balcony with beautiful lake view. On closer inspection of the room we noticed that it was worn and used in various places, sockets did not work, stains on the sofa, defective lamps…. In addition, there was no coffee maker in the room, only instant coffee.
The pool area, overlooking the lake,is also very stylish and well maintained. The service at the pool is good. However, the pool is soon shaded in the late afternoon. There is a peculiarity when visiting the pool, which seems strange, at least for Western guests: in the outdoor pool, a bathing cap must be worn.
The restaurants look very nice, but we had problems with the menu card because we don't eat fish or meat. The selection was very limited, leaving us with only the pizza from the room service menu. The hotel is very popular with Japanese guests, only a few Western guests. At the morning meal, the service staff started cleaning the floor before the end of breakfast time. Quite a few guests were still eating. For a luxury hotel with these prices, this is a no go.
From the hotel, you can walk along the lake on a nice, quiet sidewalk, and get in about 10 minutes to the main town, where the boats depart. The Lalu is by far the most beautiful hotel in Sun moon Lake, but should be renovated to justify the high prices.

Dear luxuryvoyage, Thank you for choosing The Lalu Sun Moon Lake for your vacation and share your feedback with us regarding your recent stay at our hotel. Delighted to hear that you were impressed with the stunning Japanese-style architecture and the picturesque views of Sun Moon Lake from various parts of the hotel and appreciate your positive comments about our English-speaking and friendly staff. We take your comments seriously, and we will be addressing the issues you mentioned with our maintenance and housekeeping teams to ensure that our rooms and public areas can meet or even exceed the standards from our guests. The requirement of wearing a bathing cap in the outdoor pool is a government regulation, which we understand might seem unusual for Western guests. We will make sure that this policy is communicated more clearly to our guests in the future to avoid any inconvenience. We will try our best to continuous improve our downsides and maintain our upsides in order to provide you a extraordinary experience for the next visiting in the near future. The Lalu Sun Moon Lake.

Conclusion:
Location and the original design : spectacular., 4 out of 5
Food: poor: 2/5
Service: 3/5

Room and facilities
Renovation is required , especially attention must be paid to some details. For example, worn and stained carpet and lift.

Audio system in the room is obsolete: CDs and iPod dock? No Bluetooth speaker, seriously?

Although in general the room is clean enough, but some details were missed. (See the picture, i.e., the modem or mod box for the TV was disgusting)

Food is poor.

Apparently, the management does not care about the substance of fine dining at this hotel. All they want is an appearance of fine dining. For example, the Japanese restaurant is a disaster, especially the nigiri sushi from the set menu was terribly made; the rice was dry and poorly made. I barely touched them.

Service: the staff are inexperienced and not well-trained.

One of us asked not to serve Salmon sashimi to one of the waiters who took our order confirmed. However, when the sashimi was served, every plate for us came with salmon and the one who served us had no clue!

At the breakfast, when we were asked if we would like to have coffee, we requested for latte and she confirmed. However, when the other servant came with two black coffee, she told us that the hotel no longer served latte and that you might add milk to your black coffee, which we had no issue with that if it was true. But apparently another servant serving the table behind us clearly promised the quests at that table that they might provide latte and cappuccino! Then I tried to ask around that if the espresso machine could made latte or cappuccino why they did not offer it. The truth was that they did provide latte or cappuccino and they had not clue why I was so told by the servant. OF course, the manage quickly responded to us and apologized.

The swimming poor staff was amateur. When we made it clear that we would stay at the deeper end of the pool, where the couches did not have cushions, the lady who served at the pool, rather than immediately getting us the cushion for the couch, seemed to ask us to get our own cushion when I asked for cushions.
The pool policy that requires swimming caps and prohibited ordering drinks at the pool side is strange at best.

Given the above, I could only say the staff was inexperienced and poorly trained.

Went for a diner set that cost about 100€ pp. let’s say they tried, but trying is not succeeding. Waiter that honestly did not know how to open a champagne bottle which can still be interpreted as somewhat cute was it not for the fact that the champagne was not cold... First course was un-eatable. We think they forgot some ingredients... got offered a replacement salad which was nice. Soup was ok. Weird but ok. Next course was cuttlefish cooked to gummy. The steak was full of ligaments. The lobster cheese ratio was about 1/5. Now I’m a person that says death by cheese is a good way to go. This was not. Only desert was a nice no comment course. every course got servers 25 seconds after eating the last bite of the previous course and we got served with the bill before desert.

This was a no never ever going back here.

My second stay at The Lalu. If you have read, I really enjoy the first time – however I went again, and alone – (haha). It was very near to the lunar new year holidays in Taiwan – and it’s a big celebration in the city. This time, I book the lakeview at 6F. Last time was a lakeside at 3F. I also requested the corner
suite unit which is nicer in my POV. Like the last time, I had the full experience at The Lalu (SPA, Afternoon tea, Dinner, Breakfast, Lunch, Tea).

I was given a single spa room this time for the bath I ordered – some ginger treatment which was amazing during winter there. Afternoon tea was average, dinner was excellent. The breakfast that worth mentioning is a must do/order when you’re there. Although the breakfast given is complimentary at
their restaurant, but why not have it at your private balcony capturing all that lake heaven to yourself? It was truly magical (see photo attach). Imagine butler service with white glove preparing your table. Well prepare breakfast set I must say.

This time round, I also take a short walk by the lake from the personal entrance for hotel guest of the hotel. You’ll feel like the king & queens using this entrance which is directly near the CKS wharf. This is also used to be the royal guesthouse for the government officials then later becoming Chiang Kai-Shek hostel.

The overall experience at The Lalu is just truly amazing. Even though it is one of the most expensive hotels in Taiwan – I spent around US$1.5k just for one night stay with all meals included + SPA and some souvenirs, this is also due to the lunar new year, but the hotel also decides to give away a tea
set as souvenir which is a plus. Until I step foot to Taiwan one fine day again, The Lalu memories will be always with me (it’s even my iPad wallpaper!)

I highly recommending to book in advance if you have short holidays in Taiwan (preferably months in advance). This is a must stay and experience if you’re a luxury hotel lover like myself :)

That day we had dinner here to celebrate my grandfather's birthday.
The dining environment is very comfortable, and you can directly enjoy the beautiful scenery of Sun Moon Lake outside the window.
Although it is impossible to get close to the lake, the view is still vast and pleasant.
那天我們為了慶祝我外公的生日而在這裡聚餐,用餐的環境很舒適,而且窗外可以直接欣賞日月潭的美景,雖然無法親近湖水,視野依舊遼闊與宜人。

Where do I even start? Such a heavenly stay! I had the most beautiful birthday weekend! Weather was so perfect, we slept late and woke early to appreciate the stars and sunrise, we used the pool twice. My first time ever swimming underneath stars! We felt like we were living in a dream 💗
Yes the hardware was a little dated, but we didnt mind it at all. We came here for nature and relaxation and we left with the BEST memories.
Thank you to all the staff for your great hospitality, in particular we remember Axel and Marshall, thank you for the warm welcome and send off.
Breakfast was scrumptious, lots of local delicacies and well thought out options for international travellers.
Truly recommend!
