Stayed at Fanlin House for one night in July 2015. Stayed in a twin room: quaint room with one bed up steep stairs. Room was all right, as well as the bathroom. Shower is very small and doesn't have a curtain. Liked the small garden, pond and the beautiful flowers hanging down from the front porch. People were extremely friendly and helpful. We got there 2 hours early and only waited for 15 min to check in. Area around Fanlin House not the nicest, but it didn't bother us since it was only a short drive to Hualien City. Nice place to stay over for a night or two, but definitely not the place for you if you're looking for a modern place.

This hotel is nice, the garden is very cute, it looks like a Disney movie.
My room was comfortable even if it's not a luxury place.
You will be in taroko in less than 30min, so quite convenient.

The bad point is the location, this hotel is not located in main town, so if you want to have diner, you have to rent a car or bike, and it's noisy, train and factory not very far.

It's still a good place to spend a night, very cheap

Fanlin House is a cozy B&B just outside of Hualien. The rooms are very nicely decorated, with dark wood and original designs. Ryan, the hotel manager, is a wonderful guy. He took care of everything we needed and more, we really felt at home! The breakfast was also great.

Had stayed at Fanlin house in Apr 2014. Overall, it was a unique experience, but we didn't feel the Minsu hospitality at Fanlin. The staff was a little grumpy in answering questions and the answers were rather "unfriendly" and "closed answers" given for "open ended questions".

Unique experience, but won't be back to experience such unfriendly services.

I have to admit that for the first time I can absolutely NOT agree with the other tripadvisor reviewers at all!
I still do not get why it has been described as "quiet", "oasis" etc.... When we got there just a few nights ago I obviously had totally wrong expectations due to all those reviews I had read before booking it.
It was NOT quiet - how could it be? It is located approx. 50 meters away from the railway track with trains going every 3 minutes and as it felt at night, not stopping through the night either.
On top of that we had several (!!) fighter jets starting from the army airbase located just around the corner which noisewise seemed to go right over our roof - VERY late at night! Believe it or not planes taking off from Hualien airport also seemed to fly right past "Fanlin House"...
So either we were just really unlucky or I really do not understand the previous reviews.
I can not point out enough how much we were disappointed to have booked this B&B because of it assumed location off the beaten track, in the green, away from the town.
Only to find out that the "lush garden" are only located on one side of the building, on the other side there was a dump, right in front of our room.
Yes, the "apartment for 5" that we had booked was quite spacious, but when sitting together in the evenings to play cards/have a drink and a chat, we had to sit on the naked floor as there wasn't any sitting furniture and/or coffee table...there would have been enough space for that though.
The room had lots of windows but as they were either covered with permanent "shutters", so far up under the outside roof that no sunlight could get in or they were completely (!) overgrown by plants from the outside so the whole "apartment" was quite dark and did not feel nice.
On top of all that we had lots of mosquitos in our room so one of our children got bitten a lot and had some nasty reaction to all those bites....having this big "pond" just outside the little garden mad all these biting insects (also lots of sandflies) flourish.
We didn't experience a "breakfast made to order" (as some other reviewer wrote) either as we were just given what was there...scrambled egg, ham sandwich and salad with apple and fatty dressing (?)... OK, but definitely not great.
Not even the bathroom was great, tiles falling off the wall, mould in the shower and you had to walk through the shower to get to the toilet....which left you with wet feet as soon as the first person had had a shower.....
Overall: NOT a good experience, very disappointing location, noisy, dark, "lush garden" being tiny.
I would not recommend it to anyone - unless you have very low expectations and would be happy with all the above.
Manager RYAN was very nice, informative, approachable, friendly and helpful by the way! Sorry for him that I felt I had to write this, but I hope to help others making the right decision when booking an accommodation.

This is a nice place to stay if you like to be away from the town. Quiet place with lots of.charm with beautiful garden and nice dogs and cat. The staff are hospitable, thoughtfil and helpful. The configuration of our room for 5 is like a tree house which my children loved climbing up and down the room and to the upper deck bed.

We stayed at Fanlin for one night in July 2013.
Our room was appealing, had a nice little balcony and an ensuite.
The staff were very friendly and Ryan speaks excellent English, so this is a good choice for non-Mandarin speakers travelling in Hualien and looking for a good home stay.
Tasty breakfast too.

This is BNB is a great surprise! After seeing many blogs and reviews of the BNB, when paying the visit in person, I was still thrilled by the delicate details and decoration of the whole structures and gardens! Even with the noises because of the wooden structure, I still enjoyed the stay very much. The experience was so impressive that I even did a watercolor painting of the BNB!

Fanlin House proved to be an excellent location. The hotel is very pretty with natural wood decor. Very artistic use of different woods throughout the accommodation, coat hangers are very artistic. Good breakfast provided and English is spoken. Property is located out of town but easily accessible. Natural sounds of the bullfrogs in the nearby pond breaks the countryside silence but no real problem when having a relaxing sleep.

Very unique & cosy garden minsu with lovely pets & extremely friendly host.

Traveling out to town e.g. Ziqiang night market was a breeze. Hosted arranged Quan Guo Taxi company to fetch us to which ever destination in Hualien at a fixed rate of NT150/way. Artistically cute self drawn map of Hualien was provided by Minsu.

We've got a Free upgrade to the treehouse room (3 adults + 1 child) during our stay. There is patio right at our door step. Obviously it's catered for our Happy Hour session in the evening.

Minsu located in a secluded area not recommend to cycle at night.
