great experience, very warm friendly owners who prepare a great hearty breakfast every morning as if you were their children. offered to loan us their new jackets as we went through a sudden cold spell we were unprepared for. great if you are driving, nice quiet street with easy parking.
just need to be careful if you are using google maps as Fun House directs you to a different address, be sure to google the address instead of the name

This was our one and only Min Su homestay experience in Taiwan, and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves in our 3D2N stay, and we have fond memories of the warm Taiwanese hospitality and friendship.

The location of this Min Su is away from the main town area in a suburban district, so we had a little difficulty finding our way there as the cab driver was also not familiar with the actual location. It would therefore be a wiser decision to call the cab company which the lady owner (Sherry) recommends, as they would know exactly how to get there, and at a discounted rate.
Even though the Min Su was away from the main town area, we did not find the location a disadvantage, as we found out that the Min Su was actually beside a magnificent mountain range that brings with it a steady stream of cool and fresh air in the environment. Dotted around the entrance is a pleasant array of potted plants with colourful flowers, a nice way to welcome guests to the Min Su. It is a quaint and quiet neighbourhood, a perfect place to start off our dream vacation.

Sherry offered us excellent hospitality. She gave us good advice on nice, scenic areas within Hualien to tour. Her husband also highlighted for us some must-try food in Hualien, after hearing from us that we were keen to explore some tea houses and street stalls to try some local food. Both mornings, we were welcomed by an invigorating organic breakfast, complete with a nice pot of red tea plus another pot of home-made black soy milk. On the day we visited Taroko Gorge, Sherry was also very gracious to lend my wife her own warm jacket when she realized we were not prepared for the colder temperatures up in the mountain ranges.

The Mini-Provence room which we stayed in was beautiful, with a delightful touch of European décor and ambience. It is not a big room, but it is cosy. Being the only room located on the 4th floor also gave us that added privacy that my wife and I were most grateful for, as it allowed us time to marvel at the wonder of creation plus take some very nice pictures up on our private balcony facing the mountain range and surrounding areas.

Overall, I would say that our stay at Fun House was both memorable and enjoyable. Hualien is a beautiful county, but what really made our wedding anniversary unforgettable was the pleasure of meeting a genuine and gracious family who were not just willing to tell us more about nice places-of-interest in east Taiwan, but who also opened up their home and lives to us in a very sincere and humble manner.

We enjoyed our 2 nights’ stay at this family owned hotel (民宿). We were warmly welcomed by the boss and lady boss the moment we stepped into the hotel. They did not hesitate to recommend places to visit while in Hualien, in particular, the scenic spots in Taroko National Park. The room was well maintained, cosy, and there was an attached balcony for the guests to enjoy their hot drink in this cold weather. Breakfast prepared by the lady boss looked good and tasted delicious too. There was good interaction between the guests and the owner. They really made the guests feel very much at home.

The vegetarian restaurant located next to the hotel is worth trying. The food is freshly prepared upon customer’s order, so the waiting time had to be longer. But since we are on holiday, what’s the hurry ?

Making our first visit to Hualien, we wanted to stay at a BnB that will allow us to experience the local culture. We found Fun House on Trip Advisor with amazing stories in their reviews. I have to agree with all of them. Fun House is managed by Ann and her family who are all very friendly and caring people. Located about 5 minutes away from the city, Fun House is like a peaceful hideout. We did not want to get lost in all the touristy crowd in the city so Fun House was perfect. We start our day with refreshing and healthy breakfast and come home to a relaxing atmosphere from all the natural scents put out by her mom. Her dad has amazing stories about the local places. If you want to avoid the typical touristy places, definitely talk to her dad. Her mom also made sure to tell our taxi drivers about where to bring us so we got to see the unique sights of Hualien. They sure gave us a taste of the local culture!

If you are looking for a relaxing stay with friendly host, I highly recommend Fun House. It feels like a home away from home.

From the moment we entered, David was very helpful and even carried our suitcases to the room for us. His wife and daughter were baking cookies in the kitchen and let my kids have a go too. The kids immediately warmed up to Ann who speaks very good English. She would even pack some snacks for us each morning before we headed out for the day.

David, Sherry and Ann are such hospitable folks who have graciously opened up their home to strangers. My husband asked "How does a B&B like this work? Aren't you afraid that you might have bad people as your guests?" Ann replied with a laugh "We have had zero problems all this while. Why are you bad people?"

They were also very helpful in giving suggestions where to go/eat and what to do. Our room (Flushing Paris) was very spacious and comfortable with a little nook where the children loved to play in the morning. There's a lovely view of the mountains from one of the windows too.

The family loves decorating and are always changing the colour and theme of each room. The whole house is wifi-enabled.

Even though I'm not vegetarian, I looked forward to the interesting organic vegan variety at breakfast every morning. My kids loved the bread and Sherry and Ann had to continually replenish the butter.

Sherry also runs a spa downstairs. The room looked so inviting but sadly I didn't get the opportunity to try out her aromatherapy massage.

There's so much love poured into Fun House. You won't want to leave.

You could not ask for more.. Pickup from the station, impeccably clean, funky decor, delicious vegetarian breakfasts and most importantly for us help with the local language. David, Sherry and Anne are warm welcoming hosts. They recommended Yuri which is a minute down the road for a hotpot meal and came with us to interpret the menu. See separate review. Nice quiet neighbourhood but short walk to busy street.

This is a long overdue post. We visited Hualien in Feb 2016, but till this day, my family and I still remember the warm hospitality and kindness of David and Sherry with fondness and gratitude.

Apart from the comfortable rooms, special mention must be made of the breakfast painstakingly prepared by Sherry each morning. And she does it with pride. Presentation was immaculate, but the taste impressed us even more. Because I was in the 2nd trimester if my pregnancy, Sherry went the extra mile to brew a pot of black soymilk for me, while the rest of the family were treated to freshly brewed coffee. Such was the extent of their attentiveness and generosity. We also enjoyed our conversations with them each morning. David and Sherry are such an open and sharing couple. We learned so much from them. Their food philosophy is to cook for their guests as if they are family. David and Sherry also have tips for getting around Hualien. Do engage them early in your trip plans to find out more.

The B&B is outside of the main town centre, some 10-15min away. But set in an affluent residential area that is tranquil and safe. A mere 2 min walk from the B&B is a lovely steamboat restaurant, in fact it served up the best hotpot that we had all trip. Generous portions and mind-blowing on a chilly night.

Their lifestyle is inspiring and has convinced us that Hualien must be one of the best cities in the world to live in. If we ever visit Hualien again, will definitely return to Fun House.

We loved Fun house from the moment we stepped in. We were warmly welcomed by David, Sherry and Ann ( The Host ) and after an easy check in we were shown our room on the 3rd floor. The house and the room is well done up, clean and with a lot of arty touch around the house. I heard Ann loves art and perhaps I think that's the influence.

The room looks out to the beautiful mountains of Toroko and what a feeling to sit on the bed sipping coffee watching the clouds change textures and frames every single second. It's bliss !!!

I highly recommend Fun house for a great stay and I am definitely going to come back again sooner than later !

谢谢 David, Sherry & Ann

Settled in a nice quaint neighbourhood, we felt like part of the family the moment we stepped in. Hosts were warm and friendly and gave very good recommendations to local attractions, food and cafes.

Breakfast was amazing. Home cooked goodness beautifully presented as if you were having high tea at a 5 star hotel.

It is recommended to drive in Hualian, and coming here involves a couple of small turns but well worth it. The neighbourhood is nice quiet and friendly. We thoroughly enjoyed the 4-person room we booked, it was nice, spacious and we had a nice view of the mountains from the window when we woke up.

Highly recommended!

Hello Jennifer, great to hear from you, I believe you booking is from Jul 28-30. Here in Hualien, we don't have much public transportation, only have buses between the big tourist attractions. From the train station, you can take the taxi here, it'll take about 7 mins from the back exit of the station. Ann
