This is my first time taking my 2.5 year old and my 2 elderly parents on an overseas trip and we could not have been happier than at Star Mist B&B. From the moment I made the reservation, to sending a message on LINE to confirm details, the personal service and thought were meticulous. It was our first trip to Hualien and here's what I wanted for my family:

- Very Clean (I'm the kind of person that vacuums and mops the floors in my home daily) - CHECK!

- Western bathroom (Being American, I could never stand wet floors, lack of floor mat, water getting everywhere - CHECK! And it was so comfortable that we all took a nice long soak in the tub. The water pressure was strong and the water was hot enough for some post-hiking r&r.

- Clean air - CHECK! (Having spent days in Taiwan cities, I longed for clean crisp fresh air and this place is so much nicer than staying in downtown Hualien. Only 10 min cab ride, but clean, serene and comfortable.)

- A/C & Heat - CHECK! (I was at first looking up 5 star hotels, like the Silks Place Taroko Hotel, but they didn't have heat. Previous reviewers complained about freezing in their rooms. This little B&B has both heat and A/C which we ended using both, as it as 60 F for a couple days then suddently 70+ F and very sunny on our last day, so the host turned on the A/C for us.)

- Tasteful - CHECK! (I looked through airbnb, hotel websites, other B&B sites and most of them, though cute, were not as tasteful as I was hoping for. I understand I was going to Taiwan countryside, but I wanted a relaxing vacation and to be pampered, therefore tasteful decor and layout were a big draw for me.)

- Attentive & Personal Hosts - CHECK! (Having only the ability to speak broken Mandarin, not being able to read much, whilst caring for 2 elderly and 1 toddler, I wanted personal attention. The hosts went above and beyond to make our stay comfortable and provided such genuine, warm attention that we wished we could extend our stay in Hualien.)

- Hualien Expert & Logistics Network - CHECK! (My life prior to going on vacation has been busy, stressful and sleep-deprived to say the least. Hence, I had no time and no energy to even plan my vacation itinerary in Hualien, besides choosing a place to stay. This was no problem for Star Mist as they had an extensive knowledge and intimate network relationships with taxis, gourmet coffee roasters, gourmet deli sources, maps, always reachable via phone/instant messaging and more for rates that you could not negotiate as an individual traveler.)

- A daily breakfast - CHECK! (Well it's a B&B, so I was expecting breakfast. But I wasn't expecting the B&B to have decent coffee. Coming from the SF Bay Area an abundance of artisinal coffee joints, local roasters, single-origin, pour-over, cold-brew from Philz, Blue Bottle and more.. you name it. So I was really surprised that this B&B provides your morning coffee sourced from a local roaster who also happens to be a perfectionist in his art. I was also impressed that their onion rings were not fried, but I think it's baked to be more healthy. I was just blown-away with the attention to detail and the high standards they held themselves to even to the most minute detail.)

So the above were my requirements (or had hoped to achieve). Here are some of the bonuses:

- The host practices wood working as a hobby and crafted/carved the wood panel of the concierge himself. The host also crafted the central dining table + chairs himself. Impressive!

- They also have a 2.5 year old son that played wonderfully with my 2.5 year old daughter.

- Their other guests were very family friendly. We met a 1 year old and a 4 year old. :)

- The host and the hostess were very friendly and fun to chat with. We spent nearly all our breakfasts chatting with them and the other guests together in the dining room/lobby.

- We loved our floor to ceiling windows in our room and the wonderful balcony.

- We loved their huge green lawn for the kids to run around and play on.

- We loved that they had free bikes and even one with an attached toddler seat for biking.

- We loved that there was a well-known and scenic hiking trail within walking distance from the B&B.

- We loved that they hooked up with a taxi service, equally focused on customer service and gave us discounts on every ride, and picked up us from anywhere with a phone call.

- We loved the local driver/guide they recommended to us and from asking around the rate we paid for those 8-9 hours couldn't be beat.

- We were really appreciative that our daughter broke a ball the hostess gave her to play with and they were so gracious about it, that they gave her another ball to play with.

Since we got back from our little r&r vacation in Hualien, we couldn't stop showing off photos of Star Mist, our Taroko trip and more to our friends. They were all impressed we found such a great B&B from TripAdvisor.

Oh one more thing...

- The photos displayed on the Star Mist website are faithful to what you will encounter when you check-in. Usually hotel/accommodation photos are professionally taken and dressed-up, so it's important to reference other guests photos of the place to get an idea of what it's really like. Well, their website photos are actually faithful. The rooms are that nice and the place does really look that nice. This place is pretty genuine... all the way through.

Their service exceed my expectation, staff are very friendly and helpful. As I didn't plan my trip before I go basically just pack and go, they suggested and arranged many activities for me during my staying which is really cool. I would say the owner run their B&B by heart and love. You can tell by that by just looking at the breakfast they serve, all the food are well positions with fresh salad at the top and egg roll at the bottom to make sure you eat the food in correct order.

Room is very clean and roomy with a big LCD TV got a million channel to watch( not exactly one million but enough for me to spend a whole day to just watch TV haha) There is a big mountain at the back of this B&B which means unlimited fresh air supply.

My overall experience is 10/10 and I will recommend anyone who is coming to Hualien.

This is a very nice and relatively new (4 years) modern B&B (minsu) run by a young couple, Jerry and Ivy. The location is at the foot of the mountain and there are hiking trails where you can walk to directly. It takes about 15 min drive to the city with taxi costing NT$200 which the B&B will arrange and a 25% discount is given. The bedrooms are modern, clean and comfortable with 2 bottles 0.5L drinking water and electric kettle provided. Jerry is friendly and very helpful in whatever help you need be it recommendation of restaurants, itinerary, booking, etc. He speaks good English having lived overseas for some years. We were lucky that he was free when we arrived and departed and he kindly offered to pick up from the train station and also send us off. This saves us the taxi fares to and from, not a big sum but a good gesture, as we stayed for 3 nights with two rooms. One area they could improve is perhaps the breakfast. It was a small breakfast which I did not like as it is neither local nor Western nor of any kind. Basically, it consists of fried onion rings, fried potato cubes, a very small portion of salad, with bread or local buns or local pancake (different each day) accompanied by coffee or tea. I would have preferred basic continental breakfast of toast bread and butter/jam or cereal, with juice, coffee/tea. Nice if yogurt can be included. I don't expect a full breakfast with fried eggs and bacon but certainly it is not too demanding either as the rate in this B&B is quite high. Alternatively, if they offer the traditional Taiwanese breakfast of porridge with dishes it would be my preferred choice. Overall, we enjoyed the stay with only a slight disappointment with the breakfast which was not our cups of tea.

Well located but would definitely need your own transport to travel around. Very lovely deco. Cleanliness can be improved (small hair found in bedsheet), we didn’t bother to ask for a change since we are there only for a night. Host was very friendly and provided lots of tips in getting around Hsinchu. Service is definitely 5*. Oh yes, the breakfast was excellent-all local produce

I had an amazing time spent here in this B&B. The rooms were nicely decorated and very cosy! Very clean as well. I love the spacious backyard around the house and particularly the mountainous view behind the house. I am very thankful for the wonderful hospitality from the owner Jerry and his wife. Jerry was extremely helpful and caring. He gave us many tips and suggestions for places to visit in Hualien and also recommended us a great personal tour guide for Taroko Gorge. The couple even offered us a ride to the city area! All in all, the B&B was nothing short of amazing and I would definitely come back here again!

We stayed here for 2 nights. The cosy country deco in the room and the common dining room make the place very homely. The host, Jerry and his wife took good care of us during our stay, including the recommendations of places to visit and local food specialty to try. They also assisted us with the car booking for our day trip to Tarako National Park and the train tickets to Yilan Jiaoxi. Overall, pleasant and comfortable stay.

Three reasons to stay at Star and Mist B&B
1. Convenient Location:
The B&B sits at the foot of a lush, green hill about ten minutes from the Hualien Railway Station and the Bus Station, as well as the City Centre. Surrounded by greenery, it is a place to rest and relax in the middle of Nature. Breathe in the pure, clean air, listen to birdsong at dawn, watch the star-studded night sky or simply stroll around in the expansive garden.
2. Personalized Hospitality:
Jerry and his wife are warm, friendly and extremely helpful hosts. They pay personal attention to the needs of the guests. Pick-up and drop to the station, arranging tour guide and taxi, recommending places to eat or shop at in the town, helping with the money exchange at the bank, the hosts did all this with good cheer and a wide smile.
3. Comfort:
The large, spacious rooms are full of natural light and offer great views of the garden and the thickly forested hill. The bathrooms are clean and well appointed. The linen is soft and luxurious. Toiletries, abundant bottled water, tea, coffee are supplied liberally. In short it assures you of a relaxed and luxurious holiday.
And a bonus reason – the breakfast!
The breakfast platter personally cooked and served by our hosts is scrumptious and filling. We stayed for three days and the breakfast menu changed every day. Most satisfying and yummy!
