My family went to Hualien and stayed at Errantry Lodge for the whole time we were there. It is definitely the best experience I had, and Arthur and Theresa were the most welcoming hosts we’ve had.

Breakfast was so intricately and meticulously prepared by Theresa and it will be sure to fill everyone up. The ingredients were healthy and every dish was extremely tasty.

The rooms were spacious, very clean and equipped really well! And little snacks were provided and topped up! Each room has a different theme (eg. Japan, Greece etc) but no matter which one it is, it is always comfy and homely.

The house was very nicely decorated and kept exceptionally clean. It was very cozy and well equipped! The bed was very comfortable and the rooms were spacious.

Arthur and Theresa were the best hosts our family has had. Besides being extremely welcoming, they were very helpful with the many questions we had and gave us recommendations on where to go. They even provided us with fruits and snacks after we came back at night from a day out sightseeing.

We will definitely go back to visit and stay there again!

We had a lovely weekend stay at Errantry Lodge, mainly to go visit Taroko Gorge. Arthur knew both English and Chinese, which was helpful. He and Theresa followed up regularly to make sure our stay was going well. We booked the Taiwanese-style breakfast after we checked in, and it was so delicious and healthy! A lovingly homemade meal with diverse ingredients.

The room was larger than we expected with a modern bathroom and shower. The Lodge fulfilled our request to borrow bikes, although in the end we didn't have time to use them. The neighborhood seemed safe, charming, and quiet at night.

If I had to pick one downside, it would be that the location is not walkable to the downtown night market, but the 307 bus stops on the main road right outside and goes straight there. Arthur also gave us his taxi contact number and a few tasty local food recommendations. Only wish we could have stayed longer!

Arthur was extremely helpful. He arranged transportation to meet our tour to Taroko Gorge and lent us bikes to explore the local area. The rooms were clean and comfortable. Plenty of options for places to eat in the area. Highly recommended!

We stayed in Errantry Lodge from 19 to 21 June, and absolutely enjoyed our stay. We had chosen the Aborigine Room, which was beautiful, spacious and clean. We especially loved the mix of jazzy and instrumental music playing from the music player in our room, it really allowed us to rest and relax our mind and spirit.

Arthur (whom I address as Jian Da Ge) is a wonderful host. You can see from every little detail of the guesthouse just how much heart and effort he poured into it. The lovely european (and somewhat retro) decorations, the soothing music playing in the background, the hearty and homely breakfast (the best I have ever eaten at a guesthouse), the complimentary photoshoot (more on that later)... All of it contributed to a memorable, “real vacation” experience for us.

The photoshoot was an eye-opener. Arthur is a professional photographer, and his studio is simply furnished but well equipped. We were very awkward as we had never taken studio shots before, but the photos which Arthur took for us came out really nicely. He emailed a soft copy of the photos to us just 2 days after we checked out, and we were delighted to receive it. We may consider including some of the photos for our wedding in future. :)

All in all, Errantry Lodge truly feels like a home away from home, and a real gem in Hualien. Arthur told us that he has a dream – that Hualien could one day become a destination everyone must visit in their lifetimes. He said he is slowly working towards realising this dream, and I found this really moving. Indeed, his (and his wife, Theresa’s) warm hospitality and kindness makes us want to visit Hualien again. And to those who are considering visiting Hualien, Errantry Lodge is a reason why you should visit this scenic county.

I truly hope to return to Hualien soon and stay at Errantry Lodge again. :)

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at Errantry. I visited Hualien as a single female traveler in early April 2012 and stayed 2 nights in the Aborginal room. Errantry is located in a upper middle class residential area (10 minutes drive from the Hualien Railway Station) and the main entrance is password protected by a digital security lock which the owner (Arthur) takes care to change every day. All rooms are very spacious and done up immaculately in different themes. From the decor, it is evident that a lot of thought has gone into the sourcing of furniture, bed spreads and ornaments.

Errantry also recommends very reliable tour guides. I had a very personable and knowledgable guide/driver Ah Ming whom I contacted 2 months before my trip. Those from Singapore may recognise him as the tour guide from Channel 8 travel shows hosted by Thomas Ong and Darren Lim. He knows the history of Taiwan and Hualien, best food places and all the tourist traps such as some so-called rare stones that are actually from Myanmar. I avoided an overpriced seafood restaurant along the Pacific Ocean scenic drive on his advice and got a discount on my purchase at Zeng Ji Muah Chee, thanks to Ah Ming's tour guide license. If you are going to Hualien or Taitung, I highly recommend him. But book early because his schedule gets filled up pretty quickly. As a single traveler, I paid TWD 2,700 per day for Ah Ming's transport and guide services but you can send him an email to check on dates, itinerary and quote. Google gggming for his blog and contact details.

A healthy and hearty breakfast is freshly prepared by Arthur's wife every morning. I had the western breakfast (club sandwich with mushrooms and tomato on the side, soy bean milk with blended pumpkin, red bean pudding, tea/coffee and fresh fruits) on the first day and the Asian breakfast (rice porridge with sweet potato and about 5 assorted Taiwanese side dishes, tea/coffee and fresh fruits) on the second day. When Arthur knew that I had not had enough rest the day I arrived, he prepared a warm drink with a local herb that helped me relax before going to bed.

Early one morning from 6.30-8.30am, I explored the easy cycling trails around the area to enjoy the fresh air, vegetable farms and ecology park. I highly recommend this as it was one of the highlights of my trip! The mountain bike which was in good condition was provided by Errantry without charge and came with a bottle holder stand and a pouch strapped to the bike for your valuables. Arthur is very helpful in giving directions and would provide a simple map that you can take along with you.

I had a wonderful experience and would strongly recommend Errantry.

We stayed at Errantry Lodge at the end of November. We were debating between a few different choices, but ended up going with Errantry Lodge based on a friend's recommendation. We could not have been happier with our choice! It was one of the best decisions we made for our vacation.

We have stayed at a few different bed and breakfasts (mostly in the United States), and this place blew us away in comparison. The owners are so friendly and warm-hearted, and the food and comfort level are top notch. The place is kept impeccably clean. The furnishings are very nicely done with a tasteful and modern touch. Arthur and his wife have clearly spent a lot of time thinking about their B&B and how to make their guests comfortable. Our family stayed in the Bali Room and the Cartoon Room. One thing to mention which I didn’t realize before arriving: there are 3 floors of rooms (there is no elevator, only stairs); the Japanese Room is on the 1st room right next to the shared living/kitchen area, so this room is probably most prone to noise (though with only 5 rooms total the Lodge is not really that noisy of a place to begin with). The 2nd floor has the Aborigine and Greek room. The 3rd floor houses the Bali Room and Cartoon Room. The 4th floor has Arthur’s photography studio. Each guest is treated to a portrait session with Arthur, where he spends 15-30 minutes taking various portraits of your family. He picks the best proofs and sends them to you at your home after you leave.

From the moment we arrived, Arthur and his wife showed us so much hospitality and went above and beyond what I expect as a guest at a B&B. Even though we didn’t arrive until later in the evening, they greeted us immediately and had house slippers for us. There is plenty of filtered water and tea for you in the kitchen area. Arthur gave us a map of Hualien and showed us exactly where to eat dinner, giving us several recommendations based on our tastes and preferences, and even called and arranged a taxi driver to pick us up. One of our family members was celebrating a birthday that night, so we had called Arthur prior to our arrival and asked about arranging the purchase of a birthday cake. When we came back from dinner, Arthur was waiting for us again – this time, he had a delicious chocolate hazelnut birthday cake waiting for us, complete with candles and tea. What a lovely gesture! The next morning, one of us was up early and went downstairs to read in the kitchen. Once again, Arthur was up and brought us some tea. He also set out several bikes for us to ride, telling us which routes to ride to get the best view of the mountains. We went for a wonderful early morning bike ride which felt great (the weather cooperated). For breakfast, Arthur’s wife made a multi-course Chinese breakfast with congee, fresh fruit, vegetables, and other sides. It was delicious and such a nice treat. Again, when we were departing for the train station, Arthur arranged a cab to pick us up.

We were truly sad to leave. We could have stayed there an entire week – it was so homey yet luxurious in an understated way at the same time.

One thing to note about the location: I truly think that Errantry Lodge is the ideal location for visiting Hualien and Taroko National Park. It is about a 10 minute cab ride from the train station. The cab ride was only $5 USD ($150 NTD) each way. It is also a short cab ride away to Hualien city, where there is the night market and many places to eat lunch/dinner. The other places we were considering were Silks Place and Leader Village. We drove through both during our tour of Taroko. They are both in the middle of Taroko – good if you are interested in a totally isolated stay in the middle of nature… but having spent an entire day touring Taroko, we felt like staying there would have been overkill and much less convenient. You are resigned to eating meals at the hotel, and a cab ride back to Hualien/the train station would cost closer to 1000 NTD (according to our cab driver). We actually ate at Leader Village for lunch during our tour of Taroko. Though it was touted as an “aboriginal” meal, it didn’t seem that unique of a meal and frankly was nothing memorable. Seeing the log cabins on the property, combined with the isolation and the meal we had at Leader Village, made us happy that we didn’t choose to stay there. Silks Place looked nice, but again, was in the middle of Taroko Gorge and would have been much less convenient to explore Hualien in the evening.

If you are trying to decide where to stay when visiting Taroko and Hualien, look no further – Errantry Lodge is your place!!

Wonderful service by the hosts. :) Very comfortable rooms. Overall, a cozy B&B. Breakfast is nutritious and home-cooked. We miss the breakfast! Our stay at the lodge includes a set of photos taken at the studio located on the top floor of the B&B. Arthur is a great photographer. We had lovely family photos taken by him. :)

My husband and I traveled the world for one year and we have stayed in numerous hostels, guest houses, and hotels all over. Errantry Lodge & Studeio in Hualien is definitely one of the best guest houses we have stayed in. It is absolutely spotless. Breakfast is fantastic, and the owners are extremely considerate and hospitable. If you like getting pictures taken, Mr. Jian also has a studio upstairs where he'll take quality pictures of you. He can help you organize river trekking tours and other activities as well. You won't go wrong with his recommendations on local Taiwanese food joints either. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Errantry Lodge.

Thanks again Mr. Jian! (Diana & Jiande)

HI! I think there is no need for train reservation. There are plenty of trains... If you will stay in errantry lodge, I would suggest the closest room to the entrance for your 80 year old traveler - there are not many steps to get in...I think it is the Japanese room. But the owner will find the best option for you - just dont forget to make a reservation as rooms tend to be occupied quite fast... Sorry, but I didnt rent a car. I just used taxi and bicycle. Have a good time! ps I should visit HongKong once...just it seems quite expensive... Greetings from Slovenia! Igor
