Set in an excellent location very close to the sea, the Hotel could be described as a boutique hotel with designer style decorations. Our Master room on the top floor had excellent views of the sea and was extremely comfortable, spacious and well appointed and the free bar including alcohol was appreciated - nice wine too.
Half board is included in the price and the breakfasts were very good . However if you stay for five nights, as we did, you will get bored with the same menu every night ,except for occasional specials.
The staff are Ok but for my liking the service is just too slow and the atmosphere is too cool and precious. Some exceptions though like the sommelier are more chatty. During our say we never met who was supposed to be in charge and staff should wear names badges.
I suppose its an ideal place for 2 or 3 day breaks but be prepared to dress smart for the evenings - shorts, t shirt and flip flops will not hack it!
We never tried the spa so cannot comment.

My wife and I spent a wondering 5 days at Halcyon House kicking off celebrations to our 25th Wedding anniversary. From the moment we arrived, we were looked after very well. Welcome drinks, printed itinerary and we were given a room upgrade because we are essential workers. The view from the top floor, room 305, was amazing and on our first night we watched the whales swimming off the beach. The room was immaculate and it was the little things that impressed: Sparkling wine and fruit on arrival, an all included mini-bar that was restocked each day, the turn down service each night, included breakfast which was fabulous and a farewell gift of bodum coffee cups (same as in the room) with Halcyon House written on them. A momento of a wonderful 5 days. We walked on the beach, ready by the pool side, rode the complimentary bikes to Kingscliff, went Hot Air Ballooning at Byron Bay, we at at some local restaurants (Xenia in Casuria was awesome) but also had cocktails by the pool, dinner at Paper Daisy and we simply loved our time there. We hope to be back! Our tip: Before breakfast, claim your spot by the pool - they go pretty quickly.

We stayed here for 4 nights and loved it. This little boutique hotel is gorgeous with a pool and a restaurant with incredible food. It also has a spa and is about 100m from the little village and is absolutely right on the beach which is perfect to watch the sunrises.

We found it a great base to explore the surrounding areas however had to always weigh this up against just staying and relaxing at the beautiful pool.

The 4 night rate includes breakfast and a 4 course degustation dinner whereas 5 nights or more only includes the breakfast. I did feel that 4 courses every night (especially with a 4 year old) was too much (even with the amazing food) so would suggest the hotel consider providing a breakfast only rate when you stay for more than a couple nights, also because you want to have dinner out at other places too.

Staff were so friendly and helpful. We loved it.

We stayed here for one night for a bit of luxury in the middle of a two week road trip in the camper trailer. The service is outstanding (as it should be at this price!) and it is well worth it. They get the little things right with the turn down/tidy up service and the welcome drink and the later (11am) check out allows you to soak up the place a little bit longer.
Staff are super friendly and helpful and we hope to be back one day.

We just enjoyed a very relaxing 5 night stay here.

Loved the general vibe the minute we arrived. Greeted warmly and offered a complimentary gin and tonic each whilst waiting for our room to be ready.

We stayed in a ‘Master Room’ (#301) which was on the top floor and had fantastic views of the beach and pool area below.

The room was huge and had a very generous balcony with both chairs and sunlounges. The bed was super comfy as were the luxe linen/pillows. Bathroom was great size and the shower head and water pressure fantastic.

The inclusive breakfast was great, despite a few ordering mistakes from waitstaff on two of the mornings. Very delicious.

Lunches around the pool or at the outdoor dining area most enjoyable.

Dinner was included each night and whilst delicious, I personally found it a little repetitive after 5 nights.

I think a choice of an inclusive lunch OR dinner would be a good option, as we often prefer big, long leisurely lunches whilst on holidays then a lighter meal before bed in the evenings.

All the staff were very friendly and a special mention of sommelier Fletch and restaurant manager(?) Michael. Both had fantastic wine knowledge and suggested some outstanding chardonnays and champagnes, which we enjoyed immensely.

Our only real grumble was housekeeping. Not on the standard of their jobs (which were very good), but the very annoying knocks on the door every morning and evening of our stay asking if they could clean or turn down our room.

Our dinner was pre-booked by the resort at 7.30pm each night of our stay. Why knock on our door at 7pm every night as we were showering and getting ready for dinner to ask if they could turn down our room? Surely F&B would say ‘The Taylors are in at 7.30pm every night of their stay’ and Housekeeping would know to come during our dinner service.

Every morning there was knock, in one case I was still asleep. Again, our arrival for breakfast could be communicated very easily. Or if this was missed, a call when we were poolside.

We had spa appointments booked at 10am on day #2. No surprise, a knock on the door at 9.30am.

We are fortunate to have stayed in many ‘luxury lodges’ in Australia in not dissimilar price brackets to the $2000 a night we paid here. At these other similar sized lodges (10-40 guest suites), there always appears to be very good communication between the F&B, Spa, Activities and Housekeeping departments with regards to guest movements throughout the property. This does not appear to be the case at HH.

We had a great mini-break but came away feeling for the price we paid, there could be a few small improvements to get it to the 5 star experience we were hoping for.

My husband and I stayed at Halcyon House for 3 nights in March in an ocean superior room. We had high expectations for our stay and had been wanting to visit for a long time. On first impressions the facilities are intimate and beautifully designed. It was easy to get a park and to access our room. The staff were a true delight and were consistently friendly, efficient and unpretentious. Nothing was too much trouble and we felt very welcome.

Our room was beautiful and the attention to detail was exceptional. We appreciated the small touches such as welcome chocolates, a canvas bag for the beach (to take home) and the lovely candle as a farewell gift. The included mini bar was also a huge hit with my husband! The bed was the most comfortable bed we have ever slept on and evenings were tranquil and quiet.
Our visits to Paper Daisy became the highlight of each day and the food was excellent. We also enjoyed trying the cocktail menu (seriously delicious!) and our waiter Fletcher knowledgeable and funny. During our stay we visited Halcyon Spa and enjoyed a very relaxing morning. The decor and facilities were beautiful, and again the staff were warm and helpful.

Overall we were so impressed and Halcyon House exceeded our high expectations. It was a truly relaxing experience and we can’t wait to visit again.

Unfortunately when you are paying for this luxury stay you expect a certain level of quality, finishes and presentation and sadly the building and rooms were a dressed up motel, definitely not worth the nightly rate. The pool lounges are stained and old, the pool timber edge is rotting and the cement pool surround as well as the unsightly plastic used under the pool beds looked cheap.
In the rooms they looked tired and our bedding had stains as well the the curtains. Details like this should not be over looked.
The service however was brilliant and the staff were knowledgeable and helpful, the food was delicious and was definitely the highlight of our stay.

You can feel the relaxed atmosphere of this motel conversion the second you walk in. Luxurious yet understated. Service is always friendly and accommodating. The restaurant is excellent too. The dinner menu is a choice of 4 meals for 4 courses and doesn’t change much from night to night so if you’re there for a few nights it gets a touch repetitive, but all dishes are delicious. The rooms are not huge but definitely spacious enough, with very high ceilings which gives them a good feel. One night we had to stay in the disabled room which I’d recommend avoiding but apart from that I really can’t fault this place. Try a sunset on the headland too, they’ll provide you with a blanket and esky if you need too. Also take a bike and ride down to Kingscliff which is a relaxing 45m ride each way and mostly flat.

We had an extremely disappointing experience with Halcyon House and would not recommend this hotel to anyone.

After confirming with reception that should any border restriction be imposed (due to COVID) we could re-schedule the booking, my partner and i booked a 2-night stay. This communication was in writing.

A few weeks out from our booking, borders between NSW and QLD closed, preventing travel. As a result, we contacted the hotel to see if our booking could be rescheduled given our inability to travel. Despite the written communication prior, the hotel would not honour this.

The customer service we received was beyond disgusting. This service does not reflect the luxury boutique prices you pay. I would highly suggest looking elsewhere.

We stayed at Halcyon House a couple of weeks ago after hearing lots of good reports. Following the stay, Halcyon sent us an email asking for feedback, to which we responded with the following. Never received a reply!
Good afternoon

As you have asked for feedback, I am sharing with you my thoughts. I had heard a lot of good reports about Halcyon House so was excited to come and visit last week. My husband and I travel a lot and I am not saying this for any other reason than to highlight that we have experienced a huge variety of accomodation all over the world and usually 5 star so our comments I think are a fair comparison to other similar hotels.

If I had to rate the stay out of 5, it would be 1.

I say this mostly because we just could not justify the price of $1,440 per night, mid week, in the off season of winter, outside school holidays etc. The service was good, to the standard of a 5 star hotel and the staff we encountered were all lovely and helpful - I think this was the biggest positive of your hotel. The food was nice, but again, personally we didn’t think it justified the cost. I both emailed and mentioned on the second night that I had an intolerance to garlic, that ended up being in something I ate, which caused me, shall I say “unpleasantness" for the rest of the night. In addition, to be charged $27 at dinner for basically tap sparkling water is ludicrous. Had it been bottled, where there was a cost to you for the water, I would understand but this was just unnecessary. We were also not reminded at the bar about our complimentary aperitif each night so didn’t end up having it, just small things but they add up.

Other small things that I felt were not up to the standard of accomodation of this price was the iron in my room was stained so when I used on my white trousers, it left a small stain, I did get it off, but I left the iron out for the cleaners to clean, but they just put it back in the cupboard, still with the stain on it from a previous guest. There were also unpleasant stains on our bedhead that could and should easily have been removed before we arrived. I attach images of both.

To put it into perspective, following our stay at Halcyon house, we went to the Langham on the Gold Coast. The price was more than half, (granted without dinner included), but a brand new hotel, with equally good service and the restaurant was excellent. We have also booked a return stay at 5 star Maldive Island for later in the year, overwater bungalow, peak summer season and school holidays for $1,650 per room, per night, all meals, including alcohol and several tours as well as one day spa visit for the stay.

When you look at this, as I said at the start, for the cost, although the setting is really pretty and we liked the decor and the way the old hotel has been restored, there is just not value for money in a small town like Cabarita. Some of the things I have mentioned may seem petty, but not what we expect when paying such a high price for a hotel. I guess at the end of the day, we just don’t like feeling that we have been ripped off.

Regards
Jules and Russell Ingall
