Our stay at this hotel was wonderful from the moment we arrived - by the hotel’s own boat and tractor along the sands, avoiding stray cows and water buffalo. Our lodge was delightful - spotlessly clean and well equipped. But the view was it’s crowning glory. The restaurant and pool area are well organised, beautifully situated and chilled. We couldn’t fault the food or staff. Nothing was too much trouble - equally the boatmen, grounds people and hotel staff were attentive, friendly and good at their jobs. Bee should be mentioned as the most lovely hostess, thoughtful and efficient. Staying at La Folie has induced such relaxation that we feel as though we’ve been here much longer. The island (Mr Mee’s restaurant shouldn’t be missed), the people and the location all add up to a very unique and special place to spend true quality time.

We made the crossing of the Mekong from Champasak to the island with the resort boat and the last few hundred yards with their special tractors... welcome was warm and genuine, Management and Staff always courteous and helpful.
There is plenty of space for everyone with a maximum of 60 guests at the resort during high season. The pool and it’s location are prime, at times all sun lounges are taken early.
Gardens are beautiful with a description for each plant and tree. For the 31st of December a cocktail around the pool with local musicians and some dancers from a school nearby was organized and followed by a nice dinner. We look forward to return there when plans allow.

This lodge is the perfect setting for a truly unique Christmas holiday. The location, accommodations and most of all the staff made our 5 day stay one of the best we’ve had in Southeast Asia. For Christmas Eve, the lodge prepared a very sweet celebration with live music cocktails and a table service dinner. We also really enjoyed the cooking class with Mr. Mee at his village cafe. Going off island was easy and we enjoyed taking the complimentary bicycles into to town to explore. Chez Mama’s is worth a stop for picking up a special woven scarf or wall hanging. Each day at the lodge was perfect relaxation either by the pool or on our bungalow deck especially because of the kind and generous staff. It is well worth the time to travel here and stay for a while.

We stayed three days at the lodge. We loved the location and the setting and we found the rooms in the bungalows nice. Is wonderfully quiet with nice views on the white beach and the river.
However, there are downsides. The breakfast is ridiculously poor for such a place. No fresh juice, the fruits of the breakfast taste always like they were cut at least a day before. Some pancakes are stuck for hours and except the eggs you cannot have anything freshly done. While the lodge advertises its involvement in the development of the island and the communities, there are things on the environmental side which are shocking: If four couples book a transfer from the airport in Pakse for exactly the same flight, the lodge sends four vans, each one with enough space for 12 people. Same is true for the activities you can book with the lodge for example going to a day trip to the 4000 Islands.
While the pool is nice, the way pool towels are managed is quite surprising. Even if you try to use the same towel twice in the day, cleaning staff will replace them immediately you can end by using 10 towels in the same day.
Food is OKish but really not more.

Dear Valued Guest, Thank you very much for your detailed review. We are pleased that you enjoyed location, views and rooms. We are very sorry that the breakfast did not meet your expectations and we will obviously investigate the pancake issue. Regarding juices and fruits, we share your disappointment. This time of the year in this area is known as the ‘dry season’, which makes it difficult to source quality fruits that are produced locally, and not flown over. However in terms of having anything "freshly done", we do offer a selection of dishes cooked upon order (fried rice, noodle soup, omelet/eggs) and each breakfast comes with homemade bread and Jams/honey made in Laos. Please be assured that the Lodge takes environmental considerations very seriously, being one of the pioneers in Southern Laos (please see our website for more details), although not at the expense of our guests’ comfort nor the cleanliness of the Lodge. We believe guests booking a private transfer usually expect a private transfer. Some guests prefer shared jumbos, which we are happy to help coordinating. Regarding the pool towels, it is the lodge’s policy that used ones are to be changed once the guest has left the area. Please accept our apologies if the staff kept replacing your towels too quickly. We wish you a pleasant journey, and hope you would give us another chance if you ever come back. Best regards, Sylvain

Ah, what might have been! The location is beautiful, the private transfer across the Mekong is charming (including the funny lawn mower operated cart across the broad sandy beach). The lodges are comfortable, the pool is relatively spacious and the whole infrastructure is well maintained.

There are a few minor issues that could be improved, like the inclusion of the hair conditioner in the bathroom which should be standard in a 4* place. And then there is something that spoils the entire stay: the breakfast. There are no buffet options whatsoever, so you have to choose from the menu. The quality of the food is atrocious. The "home made bread" turned out to be the cheapest kind of commercially made toast. The fried egg was raw on top and the scrambled egg was rock hard. The rice congee was a lamentable travesty: some broth with what looked like a leftover steamed rice with hardly any condiments.

We did not even try the ridiculously overpriced dinner options. There is a lovely local eatery fifteen minutes walk away in the village where the nice Mr Mee will provide freshly made good food for a fraction of the hotel price.

The place is definitely redeemable, but not without serious reorganisation of the kitchen and much more sensible pricing policy of the food.

Dear valued guests, We are sorry and apologize for the breakfast that spoiled your entire stay. It is indeed the most important meal of the day. We will investigate what went wrong with your eggs, congee and bread. As you may have seen around you, we are not spoilt with places that sell “the cheapest kind of commercially made toast”, which is why, since the opening of the Lodge more than 10 years ago, we have always baked our own bread daily. We organize buffets depending on the number of guests, otherwise we offer à la carte with just as much options, and are happy to change any dish which would not be cooked to your taste. Thank you for letting us know what is standard in the hotel industry, what kind of reorganization management should put in place and what should be our price policy. Although we would have been happy to have you for lunch or dinner. Mr. Mee’s is indeed a great option, and therefore mentioned on the map given to our guests on arrival. All the staff and I were finally happy to read that ‘the place is definitely redeemable’, it gives us hope! We hope the rest of your trip was fine, and would be happy to welcome you in the future. Best regards, Sylvain

Overlooking the long beach of Don Daeng Island, the lodge is very peaceful and relaxing.
The lodges are made entirely of simple wood but well furnished with a nice terrace overlooking Mekong.
The swimming pool is beautiful.
Excellent welcome with the staff who take care to pick you up with the lodge boat either in Champask or at the pier arriving from road 13.
Good food with the possibility of changes from the menu upon advance request.
For those wishing to use the bicycles of the lodge it is possible to travel around the island where cars are prohibited.
For the more adventurous, the staff transports you by bike by boat to Chapasak to reach the temple of Wat Phu.
Thanks to the manager who due to a small problem, then solved, at the swimming pool, not usable on our arrival, offered us a bottle of wine for dinner.
Highly recommended for those wishing to spend a few relaxing days.

We booked for one night and ended up extending for three! This hotel and island are truly out of time, magical places. From the very unusual arrival, the check-in with Bee, the rooms entirely made out of wood, the natural amenities... The food was very tasty and fairly priced for such a remote area. The breakfast was one of the best we had in Laos, and special mention for the vegetarian options (thank you!). Our only regret is that we should have booked earlier instead of staying at the horrible place on the other side of the Mekong, do not hesitate to stay at least 2 nights otherwise it would be such a waste!

We booked to stay at La Folie for 2 nights and ended up staying another night, we liked it so much.
The resort, the rooms, the pool were all lovely and well kept. We had the resort to ourselves for part of our stay as Laos is very quiet at the moment. There are bicycles available to explore the leafy lanes and rice fields around the island.
The food was excellent - try the fish special in bamboo. The French fries were also addictive!
The resort works to provide jobs for the people living on the island and to support projects there.
The biggest praise is for the team - all of them looked after us and made sure we were happy and relaxed. They were friendly and great to chat to.
I would recommend this place to all.

Beautiful views of the Mekong beach and mountains. We had small children and they had so much fun playing on the beautiful white sand beach. The rooms all have a private balcony with an amazing view. The staff was very attentive to all our needs. The grounds are kept up and very well maintained with beautiful flowers and fruit growing along the pathways. The pool was beautiful, the only down side is the shallow end of the pool is 5 ft so if you have little ones bring arm floats or something for safety. This place is so quiet and relaxing. Even the ferry ride over was relaxing.

Stayed for three nights in January 2020. Quite an experience. After arrival on a boat with lawn chairs we were taken over the large sandbar to the hotel on an iron buffalo (a motorized contraption used widely throughout SE Asia for a variety of farming tasks) pulling a small trailer. Very bumpy but quite a unique experience.
The lodge was well thought out and featured everything one could possibly want (with the exception of television). Food was good and reasonably priced, the pool was good and the rooms very comfortable. The staff were well trained and pleasant to deal with however, unsurprisingly, some were not at all fluent in English so communication could be a bit of an adventure. We had a couples foot massage that was far superior to those we have experienced in Thailand.
All in all, if you want a quiet retreat this hotel is highly recommended

Dear Valued Guest, Thank you very much for your comment, we are very happy to read that you enjoyed your experience. Indeed, most of the staff in general are not at all fluent in English (as they all come from the island). However we have been organizing English trainings during rainy season for the past three years for the service team, and it is starting to bear fruit. Thank you for recommending the Lodge. Best regards, Sylvain

Hi Southside, thank you for your questions and interest in La Folie Lodge. I can see that former guests already replied so I will add our answers as well for your information. 1. There is indeed a local restaurant on the island (called "Mr Mee", who has been actually working with La Folie since the beginning). He serves local food like fried rice, fishes.. He is usually open every day except during rice season or special occasions. We can call to check at any time while you’re here. As much as we all love Mr Mee’s place, do not expect the same standard as the hotel restaurant, this is something many guests do not seem to realize. 2. December is high season but not as busy as November or February. Of course, it depends as we may have groups from time to time. However, regarding the noise complaints -which we are truly sorry about-, they were all related to our garden view rooms which will not be available anymore in the future due to transformations. The Mekong View rooms have a better insulation. 3. All bookings include free and unlimited transfers to Champasak and back. Crossing after sunset depends on the weather, usually in December the Mekong is low and we can organize boat transfer so that you can have dinner in Champasak. 4. Price of the restaurant. As you mentioned indeed, there are logistics reasons behind the prices of the restaurant. We are in Laos, so everything is imported and more expensive than Thailand or Vietnam. Beside transportation, La Folie offers fair opportunities to local people, which means we do not just pay salaries but also all the taxes so that the staff can be covered by the social security. Unfortunately many businesses still do not do so in Laos. We also remain open all year long and offer fair employment conditions: the staff can arrange its schedule to keep working in the ricefield during the season, and we arrange different activities such as training during the low season. We also participate with our budget to complete community projects that you can visit when you come on the island (renovation of schools, infrastructures, medical dispensary). Regarding the menu,we have at the moment items from 5 up to 20 USD. All the preparations are homemade, stocks/sauces are homemade, bread is homemade, we do not use MSG or palm oil (…). You are always free to use the area’s restaurant if you want to try something else: Residence Bassac, Nakorn Café… Do not hesitate to get in touch with us for more details through our website.
