We have been to Jani shortly after the opening in 2017. Without any doubt, it was amazing, yet also very much “waterworld” back then. We know many things changed in the meanwhile thus we were thrilled to return. And what shall I say – we really felt in love! Arrival was in style: At Velana, we were escorted to the seaplane terminal in the Soneva Tesla. What a nice surprise – our former butler Aju was waiting for us there! We know her from Fushi, years ago, she is now based at the Soneva lounge. New add inside: An ice-cream, cheese and chocolate parlour, amazing 😊. And next luck: The posh branded seaplane was also waiting for us. Jani lies amidst a vast, turquoise lagoon and offers fantastic views over the wide ocean and some small islands. We stayed in one of the beach hideaways, there are only 3 units which are relatively new. This is truly a wow-villa, very private and super spacious, nestled within the tropical greenery. The huge bathroom is one of the fanciest I know. We also had our own banana tree next to the outdoor shower 😉. It’s possible to open all wooden shutters which separate the bedroom from the yoga platform and the bathroom behind to get a real open-air experience. The design of the villa is pretty chic, white wooden furniture and cushions/fabrics in white and blue hues creating a cool ocean vibe inside the villa. The house features as well the retractable roof, but no private slide. Entry level consists of the bedroom with a small washroom next, a large sofa and table area, a pantry and a separate kids room with ensuite bath. On the upper floor located is the gym, equipped among other tools also with a punching bag plus another rooftop lounge and dining area . Outside terrace offers so many nice options to chill and hanging around. The sandy beach on that side is long, yet currently are some broken coral pieces on parts of the shoreline which makes it a tad tricky to get in during low tide. This will be handled soon. The newer overwater villas on chapter II are larger in size than on chapter I and a bit different. They feature an infinity freshwater pool, and an air-conditioned living-room without the sunken table. There is also one villa which is perfect for people with mobility needs, combined with an easy access to South beach.

The impressive three-storey overwater building The Gathering in the North is the heart of the resort with several dining options, also it’s the perfect spot for sunset cocktails. Here is the communal slide located, as well the observatory plus the venue Overseas by Mathias Dahlgren. An intimate restaurant which is only open for dinner, focussing on local seafood and plant-based meals. We enjoyed a late lunch at Down to Earth, hubby decided to go for grilled fish and I took the prawns. Both dishes were excellent and the views over the lagoon are gorgeous. Dinner time was Cinema Paradiso time – we went to the amazing Director’s Cut venue opposite the large overwater screen. A superb experience, this was truly a memorable evening. Recently, there has also been added So Bespoke, an open-air teppanyaki table, seating only 10 guests. On the Southern part is the rustic Crab Shack located, also So Primitive and So Chill. Crab Shack offers a wide selection of crab dishes from around the world, of course you can also select other seafood items from the menu. Lunch was delicious, this outlet is definitely something very special. More options are So Local with rotating menus from one specific country each month, and So Wild with plant-based food. All day dining is available on both areas, North and South. One day we went for breakfast to So Chill which is directly located on South beach, perfect setting with toes in the sand. Next day we drove over with our bikes (well, that was a rather long ride) to The Gathering, home of the main breakfast area with a large selection of items presented on both storeys.

Soul is the spectacular wellness and health complex with wooden bridges that connect the different treatment huts. I was a bit injured as prior to our departure from home I stumbled down the stairs and got a bad hematoma. The spa receptionist was so kind to send me the nurse to the villa to bring along some remedy, very thoughtful. I enjoyed a wonderful treatment (all natural body scrub plus massage) and post a fresh booster on the outside recreation deck. Soul offers an immersive treatment and wellbeing program, personalised by the resident therapists. Also, Jani is the only address in the Maldives providing stem cell therapy. Afterwards, it was time to have a look at The Den, the two-storey kids club which is the largest in the Maldives. Paradise found for all kids! Including a zipline course and a swim-in bar under the waterfall where the kids can order drinks 😉. Next to the Den lies the new Olive Ridley Marine Turtle Rehabilitation Centre, which will open soon. Very good to have another base in the North! Apart from the wide offer on watersports, there is also a surf wave close-by and a resident tennis/padel tennis coach is as well based on the island. Beach-wise are several places to chill and relax scattered around the island. You can ride along with your bike and catch a sun lounger on your favourite spot of the day. The island itself is very lush, 2 kilometres long (plus each jetty another 1 km) and comes with two natural lakes. One is a sanctuary for crabs (of course not the ones which are served at the Shack). Also, there is an artificial lake which is the remnant from the wastewater plant. After different filtration stages, the water is purified and can be used for gardening etc. Their solar panels cover currently around 45% of the islands’ energy needs and it will increase in the future to around 70%. An eco-friendly mosquito trap system is in use, without harmful chemicals. We had no mozzie issues at all. Of course, there is also a huge Eco Centro on the island where food leftovers are composted and most of the solid waste goes into recycling process. Turtle Hatchlings could be spotted (with some luck of course) at certain times, the identified nests are monitored by the resident marine biologist. Always such a bunch of things to do on Soneva, and always time flies too fast!

And finally saying, the Jani team is just fantastic. Our guardians Aslam and Kelly (she is in the qualification, thus we had 2 butlers) were very dedicated and kind. Aslam is already on the island since the beginning or shortly after and a real Jani insider. Great to see again Sajeed, which we know from Fushi, and so nice meeting Manas and Samuel, both very amiable persons. Special thanks to Pea from The Gathering, a lovely girl and a good photographer as well! It was a wonderful time on this exceptional island and we are strongly thinking of a comeback next year.

Dear MichaelaReisser, Thank you for returning to Soneva Jani and for your beautifully detailed review. We are thrilled to hear that your experience surpassed your previous visit and that you felt the magic of our island once again. It’s lovely to know that your arrival was memorable and that you were warmly welcomed by our team, including your former butler, Aju. We are also glad that you found our wellness and health complex, Soul, to be spectacular and that our team could assist with your injury. As soon as you arrive onto the dock of Soneva Jani you are instantly met with a wow factor. The stunning pathways over the water lead you to the gathering which is the biggest over water structure in the Maldives.
It’s views of the surroundings lagoons are breath taking and the attention to details of the internal decor is magical. Sunken dining tables over a glass panels so you can feel close to the water, lights shaped as jelly fish hang from a large ceiling to create an amazing environment for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

We stayed in an over water bungalow in the recently completed chapter 2 side of the island. The room has the biggest wow I have ever had, a large sweeping balcony and a terrace with a pool on the edge which the incredible ocean was just 2 steps away.

Day beds ran along side the terrace, with sun loungers on both sides to maximise your time in the sun. A sunken table on the edge of the water was just an incredible place to relax and have a drink and take in the marine life around.

The kitchen was full of everything you need, including healthy homemade snacks, homemade island kombucha and a great selection of wines.

The bedroom was perfect, the room was personalised for your needs. The pillow and smells you requested when booking. The music was playing with all your favourite requests. Every detail was managed.
The bathroom had an internal shower, a shower on the bathroom balcony and a bathtub just 2 steps away from the sea which made you feel like you were on a deserted island.

Music could be played throughout the room including the second floor terrace which had incredible views of both the eastern and western sides of the island and another great spot to relax and enjoy a meal.

The staff - exceeded all expectations, they were kind, informative and attentive. They went above and beyond to make sure our stay was perfect. The story telling also made you feel part of the community and the family that live on island.
They were always on hand to offer you their best recommendations, if it was water sports activities, sunset cruises or offering their favourite coffee or fruit.

The garden which is full of produce, such as herbs, vegetables and fruit, serves the restaurants with fresh organic food taking a tour with the lovely gardeners is a highlight as they proudly let you taste all the different varieties of plants and fruits.

The Soneva brand is sustainability and this rings through the entire island. Their eco tours are fascinating and a great insight of what can be achieved with upcycling and recycling and using leftover materials for new materials. They are a leader in this field and the world could take a lot of learnings of how they have developed and innovated this element of the business.

The family feel is real, the environment is incredible, the food and beverages and health and wellness leave you feeling recharged and energised which is what we feel holidays are about!

I don't have enough words to describe the beauty of this place! Let's start with the absolutely gorgeous blue lagoon, it's one of the biggest in the Maldives. We started our stay touring the resort which is HUGE. We visited the organic gardens where the fresh produce comes from, the Eco Centro (they separate and recycle the waste - this place was so clean and organized, we were really impressed). We saw the gorgeous Cinema Paradiso, (the only silent cinema in the Maldives), tennis court and spa!

Our overwater villa was just dreamy; it has a rustic luxurious feel to it, beautifully designed, built with sustainable materials! Everything was impeccably clean. I loved the semi-outdoor bathroom where we enjoyed a nice, relaxing bath. We also had a blast going up and down the water slide and snorkeling in front of our villa.

Breakfast at Down to Earth inside the gathering is just delightful, they have several live stations to choose from and you can also order from the menu. We experienced lunch at the Crab Shack which I highly recommend, the chef came out to greet us and the food was spectacular. You can also enjoy the beautiful views of the lagoon and palm trees. So relaxing! For dinner, we tried So Starstruck (VERY SPECIAL experience, must book in advance) where you literally dine under the stars! The food was delicious and we had Maarvin, (their amazing Astronomer) walk us through what was going on in the sky. We got to see Jupiter and Saturn conjunction on the telescope and it was stunning. We also experienced dinner at Overseas by the Swedish Mathias Dahlgren, a plant-based set menu with delicious pescatarian dishes. Anywhere you go, food will be high quality, fresh and mouthwatering.

The staff was very kind and super helpful at all times. They sure go above and beyond to meet your expectations and make sure you have an unforgettable stay. Our Mr. Friday was Shimmi, he was simply amazing and took care of anything we could possibly need. I can't recommend Soneva Jani enough, our stay was exceptional and we can't wait to go back to try the brand new Chapter 2 and the Soneva Unlimited concept!

Dear Aryanne Pdilha, Sunny greetings from Soneva Jani! We sincerely appreciate that you have taken the time to share a great TripAdvisor review. Thank you so much for your fantastic comments! It really touches us that you enjoyed roaming freely around our beautiful island on your bicycle. The lagoon and surrounding nature are truly one of a kind and all our guests make wonderful memories they take back home. Thank you for highlighting our organic gardens which our Island Guardians take great care of, in order to sustainably grow the produce used in all our outlets. The Eco-centro and Cinema Paradiso are some of our signature experiences. We are very happy that they were beyond your expectations. I am equally delighted that all of the outlets you have had the pleasure of dining in, offered a mind-blowing experience for the taste as well as for the entertainment. I will personally pass on your special mentions to our In-house Astronomer Maavin, our Crab Shack Chef Pryantha, our Overseas Chef Joakim, and share your positive feedback with all our Hosts who strive daily, to offer the very best service. I’ve been fortunate to stay at a few wonderful resorts in Maldives & have always had a special time in this beautiful country. Soneva Jani, however, isn’t just a resort… it’s truly an “experience”.
And it begins the minute you are greeted by the Soneva team at the airport.
When we arrived there was a bit of a rainstorm so we ended up needing a seaplane and a quick speedboat ride to the resort.
As soon as we got on the boat, we were asked to remove our shoes since Soneva lives by the motto “no news, no shoes”. And for the next 5 days I forgot what it was like to wear shoes or even need them… and that’s quite a statement coming from a shoe addict!!
Our villa was the 2 bedroom water reserve in chapter 2 which only recently opened in December 2020 and I cannot begin to explain just how stunning the water villa was. It was huge!!

2 floors, 2 gorgeous bedrooms, the coolest lounge area, 3 full bathrooms, a perfect dressing room and the piece de resistance; the deck, slide and pool. I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many stunning shades of blue of all together. We had both the sunset and the sunrise view! Beyond grateful for that.

I liked that we were tested for covid on arrival and asked to stay in the villa until the results came because once they did we could truly forget the outside world & felt super safe.

I say Soneva is an experience because there is so much to take in. The cinema under the stars with Japanese cuisine, the fun and moorish crab shak, the various visiting Michelin star chefs, the sunset dolphin cruise where we saw some spinners! There is even a dinner under the stars with the astronomer but the skies weren’t clear enough that night.

Soneva is all about sustainable luxury, connecting with & respecting nature on in the water & on land. So it isn’t just about the beautiful beaches or sandbanks. It’s also about the greenery across island which is endless and stunning. One of my greatest memories will be the privilege of seeing the turtle hatching! It was incredible.

The new spa opens next week but we got a sneak leak and I’m sure it will be another level when it comes to wellness. It’s surrounded by a little forest, it’s own healing space. Getting a massage to the sound of waves was truly magical and there are so many more wellness and fitness experiences I didn’t have time to Indulge in.

All the staff is lovely and welcoming . The GM Frederick, resort manager Shaaz and our butler Yassir all went out of their way to make this a truly memorable stay. Really hope to visit again & can’t wait to see what they do next!

Dear Sophie Choudry, Sunny greetings from Soneva Jani Resort! Thank you for taking the time to give such wonderful feedback. We are delighted that you fully embraced our ’No News, No Shoes’ philosophy. Taking the time to reconnect with nature is essential to your wellbeing and there is no better way to do that than with your feet in the sand! Our Covid procedures create a safe environment for both our Guests and Hosts to respectively enjoy a mask-free holiday and life. It gives us great joy knowing that our brand new Chapter 2 overwater villas enchanted you in every way. Natural light and spaciousness are key elements in the new villa designs. The Island Spa is another new addition to our resort – a peaceful and relaxing area nestled in a green sea of mangroves. Thank you for highlighting some of our unique dining concepts. We strive to offer various cuisines to satisfy all our Guests. It is very kind of you to recognize Shaaz and Yasir. Yasir always wows our Guests. I will be sure to share this with him. Soneva Jani is the definition of paradise & one of the most impressive places I have ever stayed. The lagoon is so special, the beach is perfect & having a waterslide in your room is a dream. Loved the diving & snorkeling trip.

I was exceptionally impressed with the welcoming/friendly service, breakfast (food & setting) was divine as was the ice cream room. Cinema Paradiso fantastic!

The bikes are new,the WIFI works well, the gym is solid & staff in kids club were great.

The rooms are brilliant outside - waterslide, large deck, heaps of great seating, outdoor bathroom. The problems are when you go inside.

Bi-fold doors are hard to open/close,they bang in the wind, allow rain to come in & also allow heat to come in. I like sleeping with the AC off but it's hard to do that (and be environmentally friendly) when the room is so poorly insulated.

There is no AC in the lounge room so it's incredibly hot & meant our family of 4 had to sleep in a cramped space rather than across two rooms. A massive villa that can host 25 people outside but struggle to sleep a family inside!

Appreciate Soneva Jani is exclusive & expensive but at times it came across as a total rip off. A kids milkshake cost $19USD!! Was more expensive than a beer. Also the $12USD water charge is a joke. Yes they put $3 towards charity but why not build into the room price? A 10min kids banana boat ride - $280 USD! We are happy to pay a huge nightly rate for this paradise but no one wants to be ripped off for simple things.

Dear NarrabeenRooster Thank you so much for your very nice and informative review. It is good to read that you enjoyed your stay with us. I take full note of your comments regarding our pricing. We are very careful to ensure our pricing is in line with much of the industry in the Maldives and whereas we may be more expensive than others around the world, the logistics for supplying our islands are complex and expensive and this reflects in this pricing. We look forward to perhaps welcoming you in the future. If there is anything you need, please do contact me directly. Kind regards, Antony.

The lagoon at Soneva Jani is literally incredible and the epitome of why you come to the Maldives for the crystal clear waters!

Not only are the villas amazing (and yes, get one with a slide), but the hosts (staff) truly love their team and it reflects on all aspects of the property through dining, spa, tours, excursions, activities, etc...

We recommend staying here and at the original Soneva Fushi for a true experience. They’re both magical properties and I can’t wait to visit again!

We stayed in a sunset villa, which was villa number 1 and had 2 bedrooms.

They’re expanding with even more water villas and beach villas and I truly can’t wait to see where their creativity takes them next!

Thanks to the whole team for an amazing stay! xoxo

Soneva caters for everyone and makes sure your stay is the best

Taking our children away we thought was going to be stressful but this was not the case at all because of the amazing teams of staff

We took a tour to The new chapter 2 villas also during our stay this is at the south of the island they are amazing so be sure to check them out

We stayed in a one bedroom water villa with a slide on chapter 1 it was simply paradise

The best place on earth . I’ve been to the Maldives about 5 times now and nothing compares or even comes close to Soneva

Dear Andrew, Sunny greetings from Soneva Jani Resort! Thank you very much for your amazing comments. Our Team was delighted to make your stay the best you have ever had. Our overwater villas with lagoon slide are indeed unique in terms of structure, design and space. They definitely offer a magical environment to spend time with your family. Thank you for highlighting some of our Dining Destinations. Chef Priyantha from the Crab Shack and Chef Nikki from our overwater Cinema restaurant - Directors Cut - will be pleased to hear your kind words. It was a pleasure to take care of your lovely children. They had a very fun time in the DEN with Shais and Opo – our Children DEN attendants. My Team and I are looking forward to welcoming you next year and all the years to come! Best wishes, Frederic

Soneva Jani is a special place and photos do not do it justice. The owners (Sonu and Eva) are dreamers and it shows. I would sum up their concept as a luxury, eco version of fantasy island (without the creepy parts). The idea is for guests to have personalized experiences in the most beautiful settings. Some of the highlights were snorkel trips with Marvin and Ellie, lunch at Crab Shack, dinner at Cinema Paradiso and So Starstruck dinner with Marvin. Service is the number one priority and all staff treat you like family (our Ms. Friday, Rahu, was fabulous). There are very few villas on the island (currently) so even at full capacity you feel like you are the only ones there! We were there for their New Years extravaganza, which was the most amazing new year’s party I have ever been to. All the sommeliers were fantastic and chefs and their serving staff went above and beyond. The company treats its staff extremely well and invests significantly in sustainability, which means prices across the board are “So” extreme. We felt it was a good trade off and we will definitely return one day. I highly recommend their other property, Soneva Fushi, as well. We stayed at both during our trip. Fushi had excellent house reef and amazing food. Loved using the bicycles at both properties.

Dear Jamiet249, Thank you for the superb way of capturing the essence of what we strive to deliver. I am proud to learn that Ellie, Maavin and Rahu took such good care of you. You are right ... we aim to make a dream become a reality and that is not easy to capture in images or words. Personalisation, sustainabilty, amplifying the natural beauty and meanwhile curating memories is only possible with a great human dynamic. Delivering intuitive quality and creative differentiation with a sustainable approach is important to us. We are fortunate enough to have a team that cares and delivers, whilst having amazing guests such as yourself. Soneva is a unique company and to celebrate the "most amazing new year's party" of a lifetime with you is a spectacular compliment coming from you! Obviously we look forward to seeing you return and if I am correct you have not been to Soneva Kiri (Thailand) yet, if you do decide to go or return to us please let us know how we can help make it a great stay again. Rahu, Ellie and Maavin and actually all of us at Soneva Jani wish you a fabulous new year and new decade!

The entire process of getting to Soneva Jani was a breeze from the moment we arrived Male international airport. The hotel staff at the airport were very helpful and the seaplane lounge even offers cooked meal for guests who's got a longer wait time for the seaplane transfer.

Soneva is the only resort in the Maldives that requires guest to take a PCR test upon arrival. They have an in house PCR testing lab, so guests just have to wait a couple hours until their results come out before leaving their villa. I personally think that this is a great way to ensure and protect all other guests who are staying on the island. The villas at Soneva are MASSIVE, filled with details, and Super photogenic. I could spend days inside without leaving the room!

I was staying at Chapter 2 this trip, the newly opened water villas here at Soneva Jani. I must say, this is definitely the largest one bedroom overwater villa I've ever seen in the Maldives. The layout and interior design of the rooms are all really well thought out, from the entrance to light switch, the stair handles, door knobs to book shelfs and closet space, etc... You can tell a lot of creativity have been put into curating this living space. Plus, there are so many lounging spots for relaxation - on the outdoor deck, roof top terrance, even in the bathroom! Overall, I must say it has been a fantastic experience and I definitely would love to return one day.

Another thing I wanted to highlight is the cinema restaurant - Director's cut, the entrance to this restaurant is beautiful! Perfect for families with kids too, they will definitely enjoy watching movies while having dinner, and adults can have a great time too!

Last but not least, the Island Spa is a MUST try when you visit.

What a beautiful amazing place to visit..
I have travelled extensively and spent time in some of the best hotels in the world but nothing compared to this..
The attention to detail in the villas is incredible and they are a great size..
There were 4 of us. Myself and 3 of my children who were 14,16 and 18.
We spent most of our time in our villa, we were given snorkelling gear and just climbed in to the ocean from the villa steps and went a lot of time snorkelling in the reefs near by.. The pool was a good size and we spent time on the slide which was fun..
There were 3 out door showers and a outdoor bath which were fabulous.. The roof above the bed opened so you could sleep under the stars.. The kitchen area was well stocked for that late night snacks if needed.. Room service was quick and efficient..
you were given bikes to get around which were easy to use and handy for when we went to the meeting place for dinner.. the buffets were exceptional, every thing cooked fresh
The spa was fabulous and could always get an appointment and there were visiting therapists who gave alternative treatments to help the mind as well as the body..
The food isn’t cheep but if you are in a restaurant with 10 people with beautiful views and Michelin star chefs then it’s not to be expected..
The dive centre was exceptional with lovely friendly staff..
The out door cinema was really good showing old classics.
We didn’t really use the water sports which we usually do but it was all there if you wanted to..
Unfortunately the lady who was looking after the villa who was called a Mrs Friday was poorly and she tried but I would of preferred if she would of been covered earlier.. The Fridays are important to the villas as they make you aware of the different restaurants and activities..
I often sat out in the terrace area looking at the beautiful turquoise sea with the sun beating down a drink in hand and really believed I was truly very lucky to be there.. Even though the place was full you actually felt that there was no body else there..
This is a magical place that young and old can enjoy I will definitely be going back with the rest of my family..

Yes a bit (on the main island this is back in January), but it does not disturb the experience at all.
