Detailed Reviews
Carnarvon gorge is an outstanding place to visit. The hikes and walks within the National park are world class and suit all levels of fitness. The lodge is located right on the edge of the National park and so is perfectly situated for visitors. Sadly though, for us, that is all that was perfect about the lodge. (No complaints at all about staff)
At nearly $300 a night this is the most expensive accomodation in the area and although I am well aware of the premium prices asked because of the location I was willing to pay due to the presence of an on site restaurant and the photos of the accomodation provided on the website . Unfortunately due to Covid the restaurant is closed for dinner because of lack of staff. This leaves guest needing to self cater at least one meal a day. Whilst outdoor cooking facilities are provided, it is less than ideal and the communal hall for eating is somewhat backpacker lodge like (pros and cons)
The accomodation is small cabins with canvas walls. They are dated and a bit run down (zips on windows not working) bathrooms a bit mouldy etc. Maintenance
has obviously suffered to both the cabins and the grounds due to staff shortages and it shows.
This is a facility that could be outstanding but for now is just ok. Other options nearby that are cheaper would be a better spend for people considering a visit to the area.

+1
Our group of four spent 2 nights in twin safari cabins. I was a bit worried when I read some of the recent reviews about canvas blinds falling apart etc. I must say that we had no issues at all. Cabin was clean and beds comfy. Shower was super hot with a few signs of wear and tear. The room heater and aircon worked well but weather was great so did not use much. I am grateful to the owners/managers for running this lodge in such a remote location and the price you pay cannot be compared to what you could get elsewhere for same price. Was so glad we booked this place close to the main walks.
The only complaint I have is that with nearly 30 cabins there were just 2 luggage trolleys and we had to wait more than 30 mts to access one the day we checked out which is not good enough. Also would have felt more secure if we could lock the cabin from the outside as well.
I had never seen an echidna in the wild at close quarters before so that was special. We loved sitting on the verandah watching the birds and kangaroos.

the actual room was quite spacious, with a rear door and deck overlooking the grounds. As the restaurant was closed, we ate both nights in the BBQ area, everything is provided for here, utensils, oils, salt peppers etc.
the location was quite isolated, so zero noise from the road or others. the receptionist was quite helpful in terms of what to see and the various walks in the park. l

The Wilderness Lodge reopened June 7th after a months's closure due to staff shortages and I''m guessing COVID. The cabins are excellent. The restaurant has not reopened which is a pity so take in your own supplies as there are plenty of cooking facilties and a cafe which was well patronised.
We have camped/caravanned there twice before (two caravan parks nearby) as the national park is superb: scenic, clear streams with platypus, birdlife and amazing Aboriginal art.
Very comfortable glamping accommodation with comfy beds, bar fridge, air conditioning, heating, hot water, shower and even a bath. The cabins are private and set in lovely locations with birdlife, wallabies and kangaroos sharing your site.
Community centre with cooking facilites, barbeques and open fire.
$250 per night may be considered expensive but it is an isolated location, and a good alternative to caravaning or camping. Well worth a stay.

First the staff are extremely friendly and service from them is exceptional. Cabins are clean and tidy. However, a few issues
1. having a restaurant that only serves al a carte food is not the right setting. As a vegetarian the only option I had was a mushroom dish.
2. A fellow traveller ordered the pork dish extremely small and not very appetising dry pork.
3. The site states the Restaurant is open for lunch it’s not.
4. Not allowed to bring own cooking devices
5. No plates or cutlery if you wanted to do your own food
6. Food in restaurant not enough to sustain visitors who are trekking kms a day
7. Yes the advised that they could provide a lunch pack which consists of 1 bottle of water, 1 homemade slice,1 piece of fresh fruit, 1 chocolate bar, 1 baguette $30pp this would cost a family of 4 $120!! Ridiculous and you do not have any other options as there are not any plates cutlery etc
8. The site states it the restaurant caters for all tastes and budgets it does not
The rooms would benefit from toasters, cutlery, dishes.

Arrived late at 630pm. Restaurant closed as no chef available. Pots and pans provided to cook your own. The cooking area reminded us of a hostel, which this place isn’t at $300/night minimum 2 nights. Everyone in the food hall looked miserable. One guy was cooking spag bol, the whole thing felt like a backpackers. There is a single fire place that needed to be sat on top of to feel any heat from, unfortunately there were always 2 people, the most that could be seated near it, hogging the location.
The rooms were no better, freezing cold, miserable lighting, miserable room! The heater was preset and therefore next to useless trying to keep the cold air out. The windows are tiny making the entire room dark and miserable. The whole place is dated and needs a good shake up. People expect more for their money, being remote is not an excuse, Carnarvon Gorge is not that remote for Australia.
We gave management our thoughts, they have advised the place is under new ownership, the same that own Mitchell Grass in Longreach, that can only be a good thing. If the new owners can make it half as nice as Mitchell Grass then it will be a lovely place, but for now give the cold unwelcoming joint a wide berth.

We loved our stayed at Carnavon Gorge Wilderness Lodge in a luxury safari tent. It had a great hot shower and we really appreciated that we could now prepare our own meals in the central large gathering room with a beautiful place. There are bbqs, hot plates, saucepans, large fridges and freezers and you have your own plates, cutlery and glasses in your room. Loved the little deck out the front and the closeness to walks in the gorge. There is also a great french pattiserie and coffee shop on site.

The wilderness lodge website reads it is closed till 7th June 2021 and can be contacted by email or phone. Wrote them an email and never received a response, I tried calling and after ringing them three times at different intervals I managed to speak to a Desiree who was short telling me they were fully booked till October and could only offer me two nights to take it or leave it. It was overpriced for two adults. Bad attitude from the initial contact.

Nice accommodation so close to the national park. Even though it was basic, the room/tent (glamping) was very adequate and comfortable. It's a shame the restaurant was not open for dinner while we were there due to staff shortage. However, cooking in the outdoor communal kitchen (there was not much info or pictures, hence my photo upload) wasn't too bad. The cafe is open for breakfast and lunch and has super friendly staff and price was reasonable - highly recommended. Will stay there again for sure.

I WOULD have given this lodge 5 stars … lovely, peaceful location, kangaroos hopping about, very friendly staff at check in and the cafe, DELICIOUS pastries and good lunch options, comfortable and cosy bed, spacious and reasonably comfortable tent overall. Beautiful clean room, fresh and modern, with everything we needed and more for an overnight stay. Perhaps bring earplugs if you’re a light sleeper; the bar fridge and gas heater in our tent were quite noisy.
There was enough bbq equipment and crockery/cutlery in the camp kitchen to enable a decent meal to be prepared while the restaurant is not operating for dinner. BYO food obviously. A couple of large fridges and microwaves complemented the small bar fridge in the tents.
But … the HIDEOUS bathroom pod thingy attached to the tent, UGH. Felt like it had been salvaged from a budget ‘70s cruise liner. Mmmm, a dirty shower curtain attempting a lower body strangulation is in no way glamorous. Rip the thing off and start again. Add some bathroom storage too please. Rant over. Yes we’d definitely return if this issue was addressed :-)
