We came here in off season and booked the standard studio rooms. At arrival the friendly staff upgraded us to the premium studio, which were very high quality inside with aircon, fridge, and basic utensils. There is also a camp kitchen with everything you need to cook, microwave for reheating, and your own freezer section.

Takarakka is perfectly located for Carnarvon George, with just a 5 minute drive to the start of the trail walks and rock pools. A river also flows straight past the campsite where you can go swimming, and find many wallabies grazing.

Also don't be worried about going in middle of summer. We went in December, and while it got near 43 degrees during the day, we never felt uncomfortable while on the trail in the morning. If you leave early enough you will get back from the Carnarvon walks before it gets hot, and you will have an air-conditioned studio or cool rock pools to return to.

Overall an awesome experience and well worth recommending for anyone that loves the outdoors.

Isn't Carnarvon Gorge absolutely stunning? We love it here and are thrilled that you had a great time too. Each season brings a different experience - and early morning walks, then swimming or air-con in the afternoon is the perfect way to enjoy Taka Time in summer! Thanks for your recommendation, it means a lot to us.

We were very impressed with Takarakka Bush Retreat.
We had originally booked 3 nights in June, months ago, only to find we had a come home early, necessitating a change of dates. Our staff member was most helpful with the switch, and even arranged a small refund for the difference in bookings.
Our powered caravan/ tent site was fairly private, close to the camp kitchen and amenities, and also to the platypus pool.
Amenities were very good, clean and a good number of toilets and showers. Showers were hot!
Camp kitchen offered gas hot plates,or bbqs, and lots of washing up facilities and tables. Our only disappointment as campers was that we didn’t find a jug or fridge/freezer anywhere to boil water and freeze our cold bricks.
The shop is very well stocked with frozen meat, bread, groceries and camping needs including ice.
We also enjoyed a drink at the Bush bar, which offered a reasonable choice of drinks including beer, cider and wine at reasonable prices.
Takarakka is only a few km from Carnarvon Gorge National Park. The road from the highway is all bitumen with a couple of causeways to cross - no problem in the dry season.
Please note that this review is only on the camp site not the permanent tents or cabins.

While we enjoyed our stay at Takarakka Bush Resort and we will return there is some room for improvement. The amenities block had significant mould on the ceiling and the floor in the shower cubicles was always dirty. When you cleaned the floor before and after use you could see that the cleaning was very hit and miss. Their website also states that bread is available at the onsite shop which we found wasn't correct. Please update your website to reflect this.We were fortunate to have purchased a loaf before leaving Roma and next time we will ensure that we are fully self sufficient. Positives were the large site we had, the walks through Carnarvon Gorge, the magnificient night sky and the animals that visited the Resort. We will return but next time NOT rely on information on their website.

Responded 27 Aug 2020
Hi Grant, I can report that we have finally made bread supplies and the shop is now fully stocked with most items and fresh provisions. All freight and delivery companies are under the pump and with Takarakka being remote, we are at the end of the line. Look forward to seeing you again soon when our Galaxy nights, Roast dinners, Wilderness walks and bush bar happy hour - all get back to normal.

A great camp site but poor booking service. We found the Echidna circle area, site no 32, very large and quite private. Just a huge shame that one has to battle to get through on the phone ( we phoned 6 times plus and sent a couple of email requests before we got through). The online booking program is fine (maybe) if you are booking a standard site in advance. However, if you have a large caravan or are willing to shift sites just to get in there one has to phone. Met many other campers at the site who had the same issue. Also met others at our next camp site (Cania Gorge) who had given up trying to phone so they had not gone. We counted up empty power sites not to mention unpowered sites the nights we were there and we were told it was fully booked, as were others.
If they got their booking act together and had decent phone reception they could recoup their losses from shutting down due to Coronavirus. This has become a major destination for Queenslanders and we are not getting the service we deserve from the facility.
Disappointing as well that there was a key code to get into the bathroom especially in the time of Covid. Just about all the busy campsites are now making sure that their bathroom doors are open or on an easy hands free system so one does not have to touch the doors.

Due to covid, Takarakka is the only accommodation open at Carnarvon Gorge presently, and whilst it is pleasant surrounds, the fixed Studio accom experience is overpriced and lacking on many fronts.

The camping grounds look well laid out and very appealing. A few spots of picnic tables and a platypus conservation area that indeed has a huge platypus occupying, spotted dawn & dusk

The Studio room was comfortable with a small desk/table area, and good bed.

With water efficient shower heads being the norm nowadays, it was a pleasant experience to instead have a full pressure shower....

There is supposed to be Telstra & Optus reception, but that is sketchy (not their problem) but the wifi they offer is only reliably available at the deck off reception. At over $200 a night for a studio room/cabin, they can afford extenders to make sure there is wifi in the highest cost accom option.

Housekeeping don’t attend during a 2 night stay.
Crockery provided for an outdoor kitchen, but no cutlery ?
No expected welcome booklet at the room, only a map and brief run down at checkin. As example, the room fridge has no freezer compartment, but no one mentioned there is a freezer in the outdoor kitchen for the studios exclusive use.
Poor communication which could have been addressed with the usual in-room explanations you get everywhere else.

So many areas for improvement, so hopefully they care enough to fix these less than impressive lapses in standards.

We stayed in a Studio for 2 nights, and were completely surprised at the high standard of this accommodation. The bed was really comfy, the bathroom was great. A good selection of cooking utensils are provided for use in the camp kitchen which was allocated solely for the 6 studios. The view from the room overlooks bushland, and is extremely private. The wallabies were our neighbours and we loved watching them bounce past the private verandah. A must stay for Carnarvon Gorge.

We stayed on a powered site for 4 nights. The staff were friendly and in terms of facilities it was comfortable. Plenty of toilets, lovely hot showers which are much needed after a big day of walking (although I suggest having a shower in the afternoon rather than evening so you do get hot water). The creek on the grounds makes the perfect spot for platypus sighting - we saw 2 on our first night on sunset, and another one in the early morning. There are communal camp fires throughout the grounds as well as fantastic camp kitchens. We splurged and had the roast dinner - $35 each for 2 courses. It was delicious and we were lucky as 'seconds' of the roast and dessert were offered (this isn't always the case). Thanks James for your commentary! Every day from 3-6pm the 'bush bar' is open and drinks are reasonably priced. It is nice to mingle if you want to with other guests. There is also an informative video about the Gorge at 5pm. All in all, we loved our time there and highly recommend Takarakka Bush Resort.

Carnarvon Gorge is Absolutely Amazing and Takarakka Bush Resort goes hand in hand with the Wonderful Experience. We stayed in one of Takarakka's glamping tents with ensuite. The tent had a queen a single and single bunks so sleeps (5) with sheets pillows and doonas. There is also a pedistal fan and small bar fridge. Ensuite was outside in what resembled a water tank but with all the home comforts..great hot water and shower pressure, vanity and flushing toilet not a drop toilet. A small table and two chairs on the verandah was ideal to relax and take in all the animal visits, kangaroos and echidnas and variety of bird calls. Platypus can been seen down in the platypus pool. All the grounds and camp kitchens are kept clean and tidy making your stay a very enjoyable one. From Takarakka resort it's approx 2.5 KLM to Carnarvon Gorge visitor area where the main walking track begins. We loved our stay here.

This is campground has a great vibe and plenty of facilities.

We only spent 2 nights here so didn’t make use of everything on offer but the grounds and facilities are well maintained and there is everything you need - plenty of bbq facilities and big sinks for all you’re washing up. A number of toilet blocks, a small store and bar. The camp ground puts on a number of events that I’m sure you can read about on their website.

We had a tent and stayed in the macrozamia grove camping area. Our site was quite small but perfect for our 2 person set up. The sites here are very close together but a wall or two on your gazebo will give you some privacy. Normally the close sites would be a turn off for me, but with all the facilities close by you don’t need to rely on your campsite for changing etc. I also found the other campers to be kind and respectful and genuinely interested in where you were from and your plans and experiences for exploring the gorge. Because everyone is there for the same reason you automatically have something in common and it is worthwhile checking in on others’ experiences to better plan your own approach to exploring the gorge.

The best part of this campsite is the wildlife! Kangaroos greet you every morning and evening. We also had an evening and then the following day, afternoon encounter with echidnas. There is also a creek on one side of the campgrounds where you can site platypus, we weren’t lucky enough to see one this trip.

All in all, well worth the camp fees, you can tell the care and thought that goes in to maintaining this campground.

We stayed at Takarakka during the second week of Easter school holidays. The camping ground has clean toilets and hot showers, stoves, bbs and tables. The amenities are good, including Wi-fi and a store. The area is also very pretty, with a creek, lots of trees and wildlife. The camp was packed being school holidays, tents were placed very close to each other. This is something to consider if wanting a more pleasant camping experience, perhaps visiting outside of school holidays. We booked for "roast night" and that was an unpleasant experience. When we arrived we enquire about our booking and were told the roast was probably not on anymore due to delivery issues. They told us that they were let us know. Nobody bothered telling us anything for 2 days until We asked another staff member. She didn't even know they had problems with the roast. They eventually cooked the roast and it was just an extremely expensive plate with frozen vegies, hard bread, dry potatoes and powered gravy with lamb. They were also always out of ice, which made it very hard to keep our food cold. Overall the place is nice, they have good amenities but I would personally avoid booking during school holidays.
