Friendly staff and rooms clean and comfortable. However, the rooms are little bit dull and need refurbishment. Hopefully post Covid influx of tourism will be a motivation to upgrade this place. The hotel is in great location and I believe it can do better with freshened up rooms and extra 10-20 dollars per night.

The hotel is conveniently located off the main road and next to the water tower. Our room had direct access from the parking area which meant we had to keep the curtains permanently closed or you could see directly in to the room. The room was clean but tiny with no room to move around the bed. Bathroom was bigger, also clean but with very poor shower water pressure.
The main let down was the extra charge we found on our bill when we returned home, a credit card charge for minibar drinks which were not used. We had to contact the hotel to try get the charges reversed. Not good!

At this time, hotels everywhere are being forced to adapt to changes at very short notice. Our experience at Mercure Charlestown was excellent.
Booking over the phone was easy, and they made sure we had the room we were looking for.
The restaurant is following all proper distancing measures, but with limited tables make sure that you book early. The menu has been simplified but the quality if the food is not diminished. The set price for two or three courses was good value. The food was delicious.
Breakfast is now à la carte, and you do need to book.
This hotel is ideally located within minutes of the beaches, the city centre, and John Hunter hospital. There is no additional cost for car parking.
We look forward to staying here in the future.

I recently checked into an advertised “4 star hotel” through Booking.com. “The Mercure” was very unhygienic and displayed very little resemblance to the advertised 4 star accommodation we had paid for. We were very upset as we had travelled 3 hours by car to celebrate New Years Eve and had to find last minute accommodation elsewhere, leaving us out of pocket as they were unable to provide a refund. As we checked in, the receptionist had stated that the room was recently cleaned, however, when we walked in we were greeted by dead and live cockroaches, stained walls, stained bathtub, stained bathroom floor, stained bed sheets and an overall dull, unmaintained room. When I showed the receptionist the state of the room that was allegedly cleaned before we arrived, she offered a complimentary breakfast and for the cleaner to do a quick change of sheets. I was uncomfortable accepting this offer as I did not trust the hygiene of the restaurants in this hotel after seeing my room and did not trust the hygiene of their cleaning products (sponges, etc.) or bed sheets. She also admitted they had a problem with cockroaches which is why we had seen a few prior to calling her in. My partner and I asked for a refund as we were uncomfortable staying in this establishment and the receptionist refused as she “did not have the authority” and the manager was on a holiday. We have still not received any refund as the hotel do not think it was necessary for us to leave.

I’ve stayed at this hotel for a few times and always found the service is great.

Clean large room with large bathroom. TV might need an upgrade.

Highly recommended when you are visiting Newcastle and want to stay outside the town. Very close to major shopping centre.

Breakfast was great with plenty of selection.

If you want breakfast make sure you book it when you check in or when you make the reservation so you will receive a discount.

Plenty of free parking on site.

Good location, close to Kotara Westfields. Staff were very polite, friendly and helpful. There was room service only due to the current Covid issues, however the room service meals were large, fresh and a reasonable variety for both Breakfast and dinner.
Rooms could do with a little modernisation, otherwise they were clean and spacious..

The Mercure Charlestown is a perfectly standard motel-style Mercure in the Newcastle suburbs. I have probably stayed a dozen or so times in the last few years when overnighting between Sydney and the mid north coast.
Last week was perhaps my first stay during the Covid changes and will probably be my last.
As a Diamond Accor member complimentary breakfast is included and with the Covid-inspired demise of the buffet most Accor properties have provided very good a la carte breakfasts. The Mercure Charlestown also has a reasonable a la carte selection but do not expect anything more than a plate of food. That was complimentary but all beverages are charged for. While you may think that an OJ or a hot beverage would be part of an included breakfast, this Mercure thinks differently.
5 months into the calendar year and I have already stayed over 100 nights at Accor properties in Australia. This is the most pathetic and miserable policy I have come across. No other Accor property that I have stayed at engaged in such an unreasonable practice
I'm sitting on something like 100 nights in Accor properties this year

There a few things that didn't reflect the Accor brand name. Upon arrival I was a second person in for checkin. The person in front was given a complementary upgrade of room who made didn't seemed even to be an Accor plus member while I been a gold member was told no upgrade as hotel is full. Once I got to the room 217, it had a foul smell with flies in so had to go back to and complain and then moved to room 204. The room was ok but had spider on the curtains, no shampoo only conditioners available. Called reception to ask about bottled water and was told you have to pay. I believe the staff at reception has no value for Accor membership. Told about the removal of spider and was told someone will come and remove that but not one turned up. the reception staff can really make a difference of your stay any any hotel and it is definite that Mercure Charlestown staff are not trained to Accor standard yet.

Stayed 1 night in family room.

Staff were amazing, so friendly. Room size was perfect for our needs, even once the portacot was set up there was still heaps of room to move around.

The bathroom door in the family room is a sliding one and needs oiling - makes an almighty noise when opening. To avoid it waking up the baby overnight we had to find the right amount of open that would provide privacy but not result in the noise. Unfortunately I forgot to mention at checkout!

We got dinner from the restaurant delivered to the room and it was really tasty and pretty quick. I had the meat pizza and it was delicious. Kids had no complaint about their meals.

Sleep quality was reasonable - typical hotel room issues of pillows being either too low or too high and no bed is ever going to be as comfy as home.

Buffet breakfast in the restaurant was great - first breakfast buffet I've ever been to where the pancakes and waffles weren't rock hard, they were lovely and fluffy still.

Nicely situated hotel for visiting the area of Newcastle and other parts of this coastline. Only a short road trip fom Sydney and easy to find. Parking right outside our room is a big bonus when travelling with large suitcases etc. and its free. The rooms are nicely sized , comfortable and air conned . The breakfast and dinner were top quality and the staff very welcoming and made our stay really enjoyable ...

Most of our rooms have a bath with a shower over although some of the newly renovated rooms have just a shower. Currently there is no gym, sauna or spa on the premises. However our executive room does have a spa in the room.
