Its nice, great setting, wasted on an awful host. The local staff are great/amazing/cant do enough for you. It is run by an Australian man who seems really nice & helpful, and his partner - a nasty piece of work woman who is too lazy to even make a bed, wont look you in the eye and ignores you completely when you say you are not ok. They tried to move me to another room a lot less expensive than the one I paid for because the key snapped on the lock - then there was an agreement to swap me with another guest - they did not change the bedding and did not provide fresh towels though it was requested multiple times. Rooms were swapped but they changed nothing. Sometimes things happen on holiday, its how these things are addressed that you judge a place. Barrier Beach Resort left me feeling like dirt, like scum, I was ignored, I was treated badly by the manageress and I would not recommend this place until she is removed. A change of sheets, fresh towels and a free drink - that would go a long way to bringing the tolerance back but nothing. Not a single thing. Not even an apology. It was pretty disgusting.

We were staying at another resort but chose to eat here one night. Unfortunately it was a very wet night so they had to the plastic front down. We were made to feel very welcome & the Manager even came over and introduced himself. We enjoyed are entire meal and they have a great cocktail list.

My Mum and I stayed ay Barrier Beach Resort for 7 nights in Oct. After reading the reviews I thought it almost sounded too good to be true, but I can now say all the wonderful reviews are spot on. This place and the people that work there are awesome! Beach was beautiful and the water temp was so wonderfully warm. Food was delicious from breakfast to dinner. The view of the beach from the restaurant is fab and we thoroughly enjoyed the musician that played on the Friday night. Our Fare was lovely, exactly as described and seen in photos. We had a great view of the beach, plenty of room and everything was spotlessly clean. We loved being able to book tours through the office at the resort. The staff were so helpful recommending tours and organising them and taxi's for us. We did a tour of some sort 5 out of the 6 full days we were there. There are many beautiful and interesting attractions near the resort. The managers and staff could not be more helpful, friendly, professional and kind. Thank you Wayne and Sabine!

A stunning resort in an even more beautiful setting. The ocean right in-front of you is warm and clear, we saw multiple turtles while sitting on the deck overlooking the ocean. The snorkelling is great with a variety of sea-life to see. The resorts facilities were fantastic, from the free use of bikes, kayaks, snorkelling gear and stand up paddle boards, to the rooms and the restaurant and bar. The staff were so accommodating and friendly, they made us feel at home and that nothing was too much trouble. Booking tours through the resort was made easy and they had great recommendations for us. A special mention to Rob who really helped us out when we faced flight cancellations, making us feel a lot more at ease in a stressful situation. All in all, if you are looking for a quiet and serene place to base yourself in Santo where you can truly relax and unwind from the busyness of life, I wouldn’t hesitate in booking Barrier Beach Resort.

We found ourselves out of our comfort zone coming to a country we knew so little about, staying on Santo Island exceeded our expectations. The staff at Barrier Beach were amazing, they were happy to interact with us and teach us their language. The service was exceptional. Everyone was so welcoming, going above and beyond to help us to navigate our way around the island and provide us with insight as to where we should go and visit. We went for some relaxation and it definitely fit the itinerary for that. The beach front fare was amazing, waking up to the birds and sounds of the ocean was magical, then when you open the curtain and see the amazing beachfront was spectacular. The food was always fresh and very well cooked. I couldn't recommend this resort more!!!

We loved our stay at Barrier Beach resort. The beach is beautiful and the activities in the area are endless. I highly recommend Tim’s secret snorkeling spot (Tim’s Tours) and the amazing Blue holes are something not to be missed. It rained just about every day we were there but it didn’t take away from the pleasures of this beautiful island resort. The staff are so helpful and always willing to help in any way they can. Special mention to Marcel in the dining room. He seemed to be there all of the time and always with a friendly smile and love nature. We would definitely stay here again.

In my opinion, the best resort on the island. We travelled with 2 couples and had fare 6 and 7. Fare 6 is right on the beach and fare 7 just slightly back. They were both stunning, comfortable, clean and spacious. The staff is what makes this resort so amazing. The entire team are fantastic. The swimming right in front of the fare is fantastic but you need to go out a bit further to see the coral and fish life. We kayaked out to a reef and took snorkeling gear with us. We saw turtles, a dugong and lots of colorful reef fish. We went out with a local fisherman once, but no bites! Wish we had taken snorkeling gear instead, as $700 wasted really! He told us afterwards that fishing is very hard at the moment, wish we had known that before we booked. We did hire a car for 7 days and that was the best thing we did. With 2 couples it was more cost effective than doing the individual tours. If you can avoid the potholes and get used to driving on the right hand-side - well worth it. We stayed for 10 days and I could easily have stayed longer - lots to see and do on Santos.

Whilst the site was nice, No.7 is not really an ocean deluxe and should be priced accordingly, as it wasn't a complete beachfront view, as it had a path to the beach. On the first night, the security lighting was kept on all night, not turned off at 10pm, therefore the light just streamed through glass doors, not conducent to an ocean front fare, with minimal sleep had, and no compensation, or even a sorry that happened to you from the managers. On account payment at the end of the stay, with both managers in the same office, not either one of them, asked, 'how was your stay" or 'thank you for choosing this resort". They just let the Emma the receptionist girl process the payment. For others who book, take note that snorkeling is not complimentary as per website and has to be hired as well for the snorkeling tour. Tours cannot be booked back to the room, like anywhere else in the world, they have to be paid with cash, so we only had enough cash for one tour. Just very disappointing for our birthday holiday trip, as this resort was supposed to have been the highlight of the Vanuatu holiday with paying for deluxe accommodation. I won't be recommending to friends and family to stay there, even though the Vanuatuan staff were friendly both there and at Port Vila.

Response from Barrier Beach Resort, General Manager at Barrier Beach Resort
Responded 5 Aug 2023
Thank you for taking the time to write a review, Lori W. We are disappointed that you appear to have not enjoyed your stay with us. Our staff strive every day to make every guests’ stay memorable, as can be seen by other reviews on this site. Unfortunately, some guests are pre-disposed to not enjoying our hospitality or making the most of their stay, and this is disappointing to all of us here at Barrier Beach Resort. We always find it more conducive for guests to raise any concerns about their stay direct with management or staff, not to report it to their travel agent via email, when the office is walked passed many times during any given day, on the path to our fabulous full service waterfront Restaurant & Bar. Fare 7 is beachfront, with direct private access to the waters edge, 15m from the deck. When your concern about the night light was raised, it was addressed immediately. As this was a brand-new complaint, never before encountered by management or staff, we were of course unaware of any possible issue until it was raised. We do employ staff to undertake duties in the office, such as checking in/out guests etc. This is standard practice ‘anywhere else in the world’. Unfortunately, the information you have shared here for other users to take note of, is incorrect. Snorkeling equipment (Mask, Fins, Snorkel) is complimentary to guests, with only a cash deposit, or a signed docket, being kept for the duration of a stay and refunded, or destroyed, on departure. It is also incorrect that tours cannot be charged to room accounts. It is very disappointing that you missed out on all Santo has to offer because of your lack of preparedness and failure to ask question regarding tours. Most tours that Barrier Beach Resort tour partners operate can be charged to room accounts. Some operators do not, and for these we offer cash advances to guests, and the cash advance is applied to room accounts. Guests are informed of this when discussing tours with our wonderful tour advisors, so it is confusing to us why you were not aware of it? To assist you in any future holidays taken outside your home country, we recommend that it is important to carry local currency, and to invest time before departing home, investigating your destination and asking questions of local, knowledgeable staff, and not necessarily relying on your travel agent, who may have never visited the destination.

Thanks to Wayne and his team for the most relaxing time in Santo. The resort at Barrier beach caters for all your needs and met with a smile. The fares allow the tropical breeze to flow through keeping you comfortable and each with their own deck enable you to see the gorgeous coastline if you grab a beachfront fare, but all set in gorgeous tropical garden. The restaurant is exceptional, Tony makes the most delicious cocktails and Cathryn will organise any of the activities you would like to tick off while you are there. All of the staff are so welcoming and just like one big happy family. We would like to thank each and every one of you with a special mention to Sophia, Rose, Marcel, Cathryn and of course Wayne. If you want a fantastic local tour driver we had a wonderful day with Lino who shared his local knowledge and culture with us. You will not regret staying here. A must!!!
