Service
Great food, beers & wines served with warm Cumbrian hospitality. Re-opened at Easter 2017 by a local family with a long standidng connection with the village. Head Chef, Mike Haddow, has spent over 30 years behind the stove, during which time he has established an enviable reputation for delivering no nonsense quality fayre. The emphasis food wise is quality, local, regional and above all, seasonal produce, prepared with skill & care. The menu is traditional, and just what you would expect from a country pub. We are a Free house, with the bulk of our beers provided by Carlsberg, but with 3 local Craft cask beers on tap at any one time. Wines are provided by Corney & Barrow, with grape varieties to suit all tastes and budgets. Mikes wife, Margaret, looks after front of house and ensures the warmest of welcomes. Sundays are a family affair, with two fresh roasts, one of which will always be local beef, served with all the trimmings of course. Located 10 miles out of Penrith on the A686

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

Came here with my wife for Sunday lunch in Early October. We both had leek and potato soup as a starter. My wife who requires a gluten free diet was given oat crackers instead of French bread. I had the roast beef for the main meal served with yorkshire pudding, vegetables and lots of roast potatoes. There was a huge amount of beef which I could not finish. For dessert I had apple crumble and custard. My wife had a gluten free roast pork meal followed by creme brûlée. Both meals were delicious Service was excellent and the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Our table was next to a roaring open fire which created a great atmosphere on a cold wet evening. We came back the following Wednesday for another great meal by the fire.

We are staying in a holiday cottage in the village and decided to get a takeaway from the local pub The Shepherds Inn. It didn’t open until 5:30 and takeout orders are only between 6:00-7:30. A member of our party is also Vegan so decided to contact them via Facebook messenger just to check that this was ok. Spoke to Mike who was fantastic at organising vegan options with her and we were able to pre-order our takeaway for that night. Some of us went to the pub to have a few drinks before our food was ready. Such a welcoming and cosy pub, staff were lovely and guided us to sit by the fire (it was raining badly outside). We took our food home and food was fantastic, some of us had fish and chips and others burgers. The vegan option was made specially for her and she said it was lovely. Would recommend this pub not only for their food, but the staff who were so helpful and accommodating

Arranged Sunday lunch for seven while staying in nearby Gamblesby.
Mike very helpful on the 'phone and emailed the menu in advance so we could pre-order. Lovely dining area with a fire, staff very attentive, food arrived promptly, good pub food and seriously generous portions. Beef, pork and fish dishes huge!

My partner and I were staying in Langwathby but because the local pub wasn’t dog friendly we decided to venture here for our evening meal, We were pleasantly surprised how good the food and the service was here. Would highly recommend it for food or drinks or both. Will definitely be back here, So keep up the good work it is certainly paying of.

Just had an excellent meal. Great value, beautifully presented and excellent serving. The haddock was great with wonderful crispy batter and the beef burger, home made with bacon and cheese rarebit. Raspberry sundae was refreshing and looked and tasted fantastic.

A wonderful welcome, great food and really good value.
We had an incredible breakfast provided for many in a wedding party the day after the big event and then a wonderful evening meal for 18.
Couldn’t have been better. Thank you.

Been here twice this week. Very impressed by the quality of the food. Had steak and ale pie - proper, crumbly pastry and very lean meat! Dog so impressed, she tried to get in when it was closed... Also tried 2 starters - king prawns & duck salad - both delicious.

We booked a meal for a family (17 people). The food was fantastic and the service was excellent. I would recommend the Shepherds Inn to both locals and visitors alike.
The service was friendly, efficient and unobtrusive. We will definitely return. Many thanks to Mike.
