UNDARA EXPERIENCE – AUSTRALIA’S ACCESSIBLE OUTBACK! Only 3½ hours drive from Cairns & 4 hours from Townsville in Tropical North Queensland, Australia. Undara is easily accessed via the Savannah Way by conventional vehicle and sits right on the edge of the Undara Volcanic National Park. The Undara Lava Tubes are the oldest on Earth and are a world class natural geological phenomenon. Huge tubes formed approximately 190,000 years ago; molten lava drained out under a thick cooler crust, leaving a series of long, hollow tubes. Today, Undara’s highly trained Savannah Guides conduct small group tours from the resort into the lava tubes where visitors marvel at this incredible geological wonder. Winner of “Unique Accommodation” at the Australian Tourism Awards, Undara Experience offers a variety of accommodation options from restored turn-of-the-century railway carriages to beautifully appointed Pioneers Huts. Budget options include the Swags Tent Village. Shady camping and powered sites are available. Bookings Essential

Stayed here for 2 nights in the pioneer huts which were a good size and shower. Room had coffee making facilities, bar fridge only thing would be good to have 2 glasses in fridge. We also did 2 different tours and enjoy them. Is definitely worth visiting.

Travelling on the Savannahlander package, we stopped at Undara Lava Lodge for one night only, unfortunately. I have to say we were pleasantly surprised by the customer focus of Andrew and the team at the Lodge. We had booked for a king-sized bed, but found two twins on check-in. "No problem, housekeeping would be over to sort it out." We came back from our tour and there was the king bed all made up. Nothing was too much trouble, which is what paying customers expect, within reason, of course. Our Pioneer Hut was well appointed, roomy, plenty of space for luggage; although again, it was a demountable and the floor could have been cleaner. The air-conditioning was a split system, it worked well and was streets ahead of the window rattler units we had experienced on the trip. Having to ask for plates & cutlery from Reception was a bit of a bother. I'm sure there's a reason it's not already in the room. Food at the restaurant was excellent and the Bush Breakfast (cooked by Vi) the next morning was without a doubt the best breakfast we'd been served; cooked fresh outdoors in the early morning with hot plunger coffee. Brilliant. Well done Undara. The Lava Tubes tour was excellent. Conducted by Geologist, Mike, who was able to expertly answer all the questions. Definitely would recommend Undara Lave Lodge and their tours.

G'day Sabyfoz, Thanks for your AWESOME feedback! So glad you loved Undara. You would absolutely LOVE our annual Undara Outback Rock & Blues festival. We hold it each year over the Anzac Day long weekend in April and as 2022 is already SOLD OUT we'll be running a second one over the long weekend in October (30th Sept - 2nd Oct 22) If that sounds like something you'd enjoy, book now as it will sell out also! Thanks again

We stayed 2 nights n the new (May 2021) Homestead rooms/cabins. They were exceptionally clean with aircon available and good size modern bathroom. Dinner and bar service were available at the main centre point of the complex in a large open air (but covered) pavilion facing the bush. Open fires and old railway carriages covered to dining booths were also around the edge of it. Bistro meals were good size and reasonable prices - I recommend the macadamia crusted baramundi. Breakfast in the bush can be booked in advance - from 7 and 8 am -walk 300-400 metro along a trail into the bush to an nice area under the trees where a hot breakfast and other options are available - just watch-out for eager kookaburras after your bacon! Tours of the lava tubes nearby can be booked and well worth it but book in advance. Lots of birdlife and wildlife around and a series of good, well marked walking trails in the area. There are other accommodation options available, including camping and van sites, also other cabins than the newer Homestead ones. Its not along drive out from the Atherton/Mareeba region, or even Cairns (just under 300 kms direct) and a few stops along the way including the towns of Millaa Millaa, Ravenshoe and Big Millstream falls just outside the town. The last 120kms is largely savannah forest. Road is sealed all the way to the Undara site. Staff and guides were friendly and very helpful with service and advice. Highly recommended for a 2-3 day break out in the bush.

We stayed on a powered site in the campground area. The site was fine although very dusty. The amenities were ok. The laundry had washing machines but no dryers and the red dust carried in the wind makes getting the clean washing dry difficult. The bistro was excellent and the coffee good. The lava tube archway tour was very good and worth the experience. There are several walks that start near the main lodge and I can recommend the bluff walk. Worth noting is that there is no mobile reception outside the main lodge area.
