On the edge of the Undara Volcanic National Park in Tropical Far North Queensland, the Discovery Resorts - Undara delivers access to a world-class geological phenomenon and award-winning accommodation options unique to the Australian outback. Home to one of the world’s longest lava-tube cave systems, this amazing feature formed over 190,000 years ago when a sustained volcanic eruption spewed molten lava down a dry riverbed. Easily accessible from the Savannah Way, the Discovery Resorts - Undara is three hours by car from Cairns. It features beautifully restored railway carriages as deluxe rooms, air-conditioned pioneer huts, homestead style rooms, a swag tent village and spacious powered caravan and camping site. Tours and activities are central to staying at Undara, and a half-day tour of the lava tubes is a must-do with the park’s experienced Savanah guides. Wildlife at Sunset tours are also popular with a glass of bubbles in hand. Authentic outback dining is always on the menu, with bush breakfasts of billy tea, old-fashioned recipes at the Iron Pot Bistro and a vintage Saloon Car Bar ready to quench your thirst!

Special getaway - weekend away - way from the crowds, rustic atmosphere, immaculate clean room, dinner delicious and unexpected great choices, flavourful and nicely cooked - most important though - the outback setting is unbeatable!
We did the evening sunset tour - beautiful view - do not expect a long walk, very easy and a bit too long bus ride, commentary great though.
In the morning we embarked on the Wind Tunnel tour, expected a bit more sportive activity, which is not the case, though the guide offered a depth of such interesting knowledge of history, science, volcanic, and the tour through the tunnel was special

highly recommended !

We stayed for 2 nights in Undara, in one of their railway carriages. The layout was well thought out and the place was quite comfortable. The sleeping area was rather cramped. It was quite cold when we were there and there is no heating, which should be rectified. There are fans but no A/C so it could be uncomfortable in summer. The only option for breakfast is at $26.50 per person. There is a kettle in the room for tea and coffee, but no milk or creamer is supplied. We brought a toaster and food with us and made our own simple breakfast.

There is free wifi in the main building but none in other areas. This is unacceptable in 2020, particularly when there is little (Telstra) or no (other carriers) mobile reception. On this point of mobile reception, we went on one of the free bushwalks. The advice they give is to take your mobile phone with you in case you get lost. Unless you get lost in the resort near the swimming pool, a mobile is going to be totally useless.

There is no other accommodation anywhere close, and the only way to visit the lava tubes is on one of their tours (see below). They take full advantage of their monopoly position by charging accordingly.

We went on the Archway tour and it was quite good. We saw several caves and the guide (Jason) gave a very good description of the landscape, geology, flora and fauna. The tour lasted a bit over two hours. We were satisfied with the tour although the price was a little high. Basically, there is no alternative so they charge what they like; $40 would have been more acceptable.

One night we cooked a BBQ and the second night we ate dinner in the restaurant. BBQ facilities were basic but adequate. The restaurant meal was quite good value, especially considering the remote location and the lack of competition. We both had pork cutlets that were OK but a little overcooked.

I would have preferred to review the resort, the tour and the restaurant separately but this does not seem possible on TA. My overall evaluation of Undara is a compromise between the tour (excellent), the restaurant (very good) and the resort (average). Overall, we were glad we came but the resort has plenty of room for improvement.

G'day ron d, Thanks for your feedback following your recent stay at Undara. I'm sorry that it wasn't quite up to your expectations. You're the type of guest I wish I had the opportunity to have a beer with. I'm know I would learn plenty from you as I'm sure you would have a very different point of view if I was to share the harsh realities of owning & running a business in a remote area with you. I have found in life, that often things are never as simple & as clean cut as they first appear. I appreciate the fact that you took the time to comment.

Firstly, for people considering a trip here reading this review it is important to note that at the time of writing this review Undara will be closed (shuts down from November to March) .

Given this is accomodation review I'll just talk about this aspect rather than our tour of the lava tubes. The accomodation facilities here are well established, given it's popularity as a stop on the savannah way. There are numerous options from converted railway carriages, powered and unpowered site and camping. We camped one night.

The camping facilities here were fantastic. There were clearly marked sites each with fire pits. There are adjacent toilet and shower facilities. There was a basic kitchen facility with BBQ's available. There was a small pool. However, what was most impressive was the large reception area which had good strength free wifi as well as bolstered Telstra mobile signal (you won't get any signal outside of this area). There is a bar and a restaurant which you need to book into.

Adjacent to the accomodation was the lava tubes but also a number of bush walks. People staying here could easily stay 2 nights rather than just one. We were very happy with our stay.

It is amazing that such significant geological features as these Lava Tubes are not better known although their importance has been recognised by Sir David Attenborough. A guided tour to fully appreciate them is a must. Undara Experience provides accomodation to suit all tastes and budgets, from tents and caravan facilities to very comfortable air conditioned "homestead " hotel rooms. There is a pool although it was too cold for us to use. Food in the on site restaurant is somewhat limited in choice but of a good standard. This is a remote location so they do well with what they have and most people probably only stay a night or two. The bush breakfast experience is a must - abundant choices and quantities and a fun bush setting with billys heated and toast cooked over a camp fire. There are lots of self guided walks around the property but a guided tour is best for seeing the lava tubes in the national park.
It was definitely worth the 4 hour plus bus trip from Cairns which was comfortable and interesting in it's own way.
The commitment of the Collins family in preserving the tubes for posterity and helping make them accessible to all is commendable.

This place is amazing. COVID safe plan is in place and meets all recommendations. Sites are large enough that there is enough distance. Amenities are like an en-suite. Pool was closed due to COVID. The tour offered gloves and masks if required and hand sanitiser pre and post tour. Let’s face it they have embraced the COVID world we live in. The tour was amazing and if you want a tipple the port is highly recommended. Staff are pleasant and helpful. The only down side is we didn’t have enough time to stay longer. Well done

The best surprise was being provided with free instant coffee, tea and chilled water in the Undara Experience restaurant area; available to anyone, whether staying there or not. Large camp kitchen with three BBQs, gas hot plates, two sinks, microwave, fridge, kettle and plenty of table and chairs. Amenities consisted of unisex individual toilet/shower cubicles that were very squishy with no soap holder and nowhere to place your personal items. A pallet or rubber mat outside the shower recess would be helpful. Their free wifi worked only in the reception/restaurant area. I couldn't see any clothesline despite there being two washing machines and no clothes dryer. Cost $39 for powered site.

G'day Rhondahau, Thanks for your feedback! I'm so pleased you enjoyed your stay at Undara. We have supplied the items you requested many time but unfortunately they repeatable get stolen! This includes soap holders, hooks on the walls and rubber mats outside the shower! It's very frustrating! Also there are clotheslines at both of the amenities blocks. Thanks again for your feedback

We were looking to get out of Cairns for a little break and decided to head down to the Undara Lava Tubes and try the Undara Experience.
So glad we did, it was the most amazing place.
The Tour of the Lava Tubes was communicated excellently, informative and even a little light hearted.
No one was left behind or missed out. Very Professional Guides who must sometimes feel like Ground Hog Day but you never get that feeling. Our guide really gives you the feeling they love and enjoy their job.
The accommodation gets 5 stars from me . We stayed in the Pioneer Huts and it was perfect; quiet, relaxing and private. A great Australian Bush Experience. There is accommondation available for all budgets and for families too.
Food and Beverage..The food was tasty, good qualtiy and reasonabley priced for a remote location.
The Facilities are clean , well presented and the layout is well presented and not cramped. A great Covid 19 plan in place here.
Not a bush walker or hiker, I did the obligatory basic walk . This walk left me wanting more and on this day my step count was at 18,500 ; not bad for an old girl.
To say I loved and enjoyed this place is an understatement. I would love to go back a little fitter and do the Wind Tunnel Tour.
I highly recommend this experience to anyone ..age or fitness should not hold you bac.

We had a three night stay the drive out from Townsville was really smooth and wide open good roads (with the exception of around 10km of single lane road)
Check in was friendly and easy we stayed in a railway carriage with a comfy bed with shower (was really appreciated after a day of exploring)toilet and bar fridge it had really good ventilation.
The dining and bar area is really impressive especially the roof which captures the country escarpment and the food was exceptional.
I would highly recommend doing the rim walk at kalkani before going on the lava tube tour as this captures the surrounding environment and gives you a clearer overview when on the tour.
The lava tube tour is spectacular and very informative a lot of stairs so comfortable footwear is required.
Did the pioneer hut walk early the next day very easy walk and well worth it and rested up and enjoyed the surroundings then went on the sunset tour drove around looking at skippys for a bit then climbed the hill and was blown away by the escarpment and the full moon crystal clear on one side and the beautiful colours of the setting sun on the other with a glass of bubbly outstanding. Followed by bats coming out of another section of lava tube.
The whole experience was outstanding and congratulations to all the staff on their commitment to ensuring this.
Thank you

We stayed for one night in a Homestead cabin and did the Archway Explorer tour the next morning. The whole experience - accommodation, dining and tour - was great. The tour of the lava tubes was very well done and highly recommended. Service in the restaurant was efficient and friendly. Our only disappointment was that the homestead rooms lacked character. They were modern, clean and comfortable but seemed quite bare with no extra touches such as art/photographs, tissues, bedside tables, etc. The balcony looked out towards the bus maintenance workshop, and relaxing on the balcony at the end of the day was accompanied by engine noises rather than birdsong. The cabins are quite new and will be better when the vegetation and landscaping has had time to grow. Other areas of the resort seemed much better integrated into the natural environment. In hindsight, we should probably have chosen to stay in the railway carriages for a bit of extra atmosphere,

G'day JanPBrisbane, Thanks very much for your positive feedback. I completely agree with your comments. We have pictures and stories to go up on the walls of every room in the Homesteads as soon as business slows down and we can get into the rooms. As we only opened them in March 2021, it will take a little while for the landscaping to establish so as to screen out the Machinery Shed. I wish there was something I could do to speed up the growing of the trees as it will be perfect when they thicken up Thanks again for your comments. We treated ourselves and stayed the night in the train carriage accommodation. It was wonderfully restored, a fun novelty in the outback.
We went on the Archway lava tube tour. The tour guide was very entertaining and insightful. The tour itself consisted of a short bus trip into the park and a walk through 2 caves on well defined even paths, boardwalks and stairs. There is quite a bit of stairs but all quite manageable. What we saw on the tour was beautiful and unique. Well worth it.

We couldn’t resist a few drinks and dinner at the bar and restaurant which is a series of train carriages parched together by a large deck and roof - awesome atmosphere!

G'day Elizabeth, thanks for your question. Sorry it has taken us a log time to respond. If you have further questions, please email Undara directly on 1800990992 This will ensure a quicker response time. In answer to your questions What is the road travel time from Winton to Undara Lava Tunnels? - The depends entirely on which way you intend to travel and there are many options. You might like to look at those different routes on Google Maps and it will show you the time & distance for each route. If you have a 4WD & an off road van the quickest way (& most direct) is from Winton - Hughenden (all sealed) then Hughenden up the Hann Highway to the Lynd Junction (mostly all unsealed) & then from the Lynd Junction to Undara Experience (all sealed) A highlight on this route is you have the opportunity to visit Porcupine Gorge NP. An absolute must see!! The distance is 609klms which would be 6hrs 42mins to drive non stop Can you tow a caravan over the Kennedy Developmental Road around Easter time or is it too wet to traverse? - We have had allot of rain so far this year & with Easter over a month away, I wouldn't begin to try to predict what the weather is going to do however that said, the Kennedy Highway is all sealed so it's no trouble to tow a caravan on it. If it is raining, contact the RACQ for road conditions or the local police in each of the towns along the road. Remember, IF IT'S FLOODED, FORGET IT! Yes the Kennedy Highway is all sealed. Good luck & remember if you have anymore questions contact Undara Reservations Have a Great Day!
