Travellers' Choice
Today, the Azores Islands can relish in the grand re-opening of their most famous hotel, newly renovated. Terra Nostra Garden Hotel reopens to the public after extensive renovations reclassified as a 4-star property, positioning itself as one of the top hotels in Portugal. Located in Furnas Valley, on S. Miguel Island, Terra Nostra Garden Hotel is nestled in one of the World's best "Green Retreats," as deemed by Conde Nast Traveler - the 18th century Terra Nostra Garden exudes a breathtaking atmosphere of exoticism and mysticism in perfect harmony with nature. Opened since 1935, a time when the Azores Islands entered the international travel circuit for those seeking unique experiences, Terra Nostra Garden Hotel reopens with the same charming aura and exclusivity of the past, bringing you 86 rooms split between two buildings, maintaining its architectural history: the Art Deco Wing, built in the 1930's and the Garden Wing, added in the 1990's. The hotel's interior design concept stems from the Art Deco style, and introduces contemporary elements and materials, creating comfort and exclusivity perfectly integrated with the lush Terra Nostra Garden. The new Wellness areas are available and improved upon, making this hotel the perfect spotyou're your special events, taking into consideration the tremendous potential of Furnas Valley with theme-oriented activities, as a retreat getaway and so much more. In addition to the renovation, Terra Nostra Garden Hotel highlights Azorean products, focuses on the Furnas Cozido experience (a sustainable meal fully cooked underground with the heat of the volcanic hot springs) and the importance of protecting Furnas's unique environmental resources. The new Terra Nostra Restaurant offers a vast array of wine choices and delectable menu, up to par with the expectations of any wine connoisseur or avid foodie, who will appreciate the impeccable service and ambiance this restaurant has always had. Come stay with us at Terra Nostra Garden Hotel and you will have an unforgettable wellness experience, leaving you with memories to last a lifetime.

Amazing place, should be a 5* hotel (that's how I felt staying there). All the staff were really nice and attentive, room was immaculately clean, I enjoyed everything that the hotel has to offer. The restaurant was probably one of the fanciest I ever visited. Highly recommended, you won't regret. And for people working there - thank you so much for all the care I was given, great job guys!

An hotel with super-comfortable imbedded in a luxurious garden with a unique pool with volcanic thermal water (wear old and dark swimwear!) that should not be missed. I have stayed at the hotel over and over at this hotel since the 70's and it is always a joy to return. Do not miss the restaurant, which has top food and an interesting (portuguese) wine list (pre-order the cozido that really worth trying, and keep in mind that the portions are enormous). It is definitively one of my favourite hotels with a superlative value for money.

Thank you to the hotel for a there hospitality and kindness. I went to this hotel to relax with my girlfriend and get a massage, however the therapist was on holiday which was a disappointment at first but the hotel gave us a free upgrade on our room and a free late check out. Which totally made it up. The garden and the thermal pools are a very good way to relax and get a sense of nature. Thank you to the staff for the perfect weekend getaway.

We have been here the first time some 15 years ago as a couple, when discovering the Açores, returned, still with the three young ones and now off-school holidays again - for me it is THE hotel; if you don’t have a special feeling for botanic gardens and if you don’t appreciate a classic, somehow british-portuguese touch, stay away and don’t spoil it. On CoVid- measures it was topping what we saw so far; the service is professional and sympathetic at the same time; the cleaning staff leave the place spotless and the room rate is fair for what you get - and being located in the middle, you even reach easily the south or north coast.

This hotel is just impeccable! Pictures does no justify it. Staff, service, rooms, cleanliness is a top notch. I've been staying here during the pandemic period and I can't even imagine how this can be managed any better. I didn't expect a lot when I booked it because pictures looked really simple but in reality this was way better then any 5 star hotel where I stayed before. And of course don't forget about an exclusive bonus that you get when you stay here - you have all thermal pools in the park just for your self and this is a completely different experience contrary to what you get when it is crowded with tourists during the day.

Yolanda P asked a question Oct. 2020
Can Americans travel to Azores?
Answer from Clare B
Oct. 2020 |
You would need a passport to do that. According to the CCN online map, Americans were not allowed to travel to the Azores in July 2020 due to Coronavirus - check local guidance for up-to-date info on the rules pertaining to the pandemic...

Unfortunately, the island does not provide public transport convenient for tourists. However, staying in the town you can explore the town itself by foot. There is enough attractions for 2-3 days or more if you like hot springs pools and walking around the lake. But the island has many places you can reach only by car or tour bus. Not sure if the hotel organise the trips but maybe they can contact to tour agency.

Yes. You get unlimited access to the hot springs and botanical gardens. We went to the hot springs very early in the morning and also late in the evening. Also they have large comfy grey robes that you can wear to and from the hot Springs. It’s a fantastic hotel and I’m so glad we stayed there.

Is European (e.g. topless) sunbathing common in the Azores?
Answer from Rebecca H

I traveled to five of the nine islands and I never saw topless sunbathers, so my answer would be probably not.
