My wife and I had been meaning to visit Leopard Trails for many years and we finally got down to doing so in mid-January 2021 and it lived up to all expectations!

Our experience was seamless, from meeting at the liaison point to departure. We stayed in a suite tent (No. 8 - Ebony) which was extraordinarily comfortable and where it was clear from the moment of stepping inside that a great deal of attention to detail had been provided, ranging from the choice of furnishings to the spotless nature of the accommodation - which is an incredible feat given it being in the wilderness.

The quality and choice of furnishings, in the room, bathroom and the external sitting areas overlooking the plunge pool made it feel very homely, whilst being in a wild setting. In this regard it could be described as nothing less than market leading and the photos are very accurate.

For dinner we had been offered a choice of Sri Lankan or Western cuisine, we opted for the former and the food was delicious. As someone who is accustom to the full array of Sri Lankan vegetables, there were a few twists on things (like fried coconut kernel!) that made sure that the meal was interesting in addition to being very satisfying. As we had a 3 year old son with us, the staff did everything as requested to ensure he had something a little toned down for him to eat. Pila and his team went to particular effort to lay out a table under the stars for dinner which was a very special setting.

Our round in the park was well organised and given the proximity to the park entrance, the journey to the park and back never felt prolonged. In the park we had some splendid sightings, topped off by a 25 minute encounter with Michael, an adult male leopard. We were accompanied in the park by Pila and his explanation of the history of Sithulpauwwa and its connection to modern day Block 1 was a stimulating reminder of the history of the area. The quality of the explanation and conversation with Pila epitomise the intangible value of the Leopard Trail experience.

Through our few days in Yala, it became clear that Leopard Trails has been at the forefront of the Yala luxury tented experience. In addition to their amazing offering, they have also laid the roots for others in this space to flourish, which is truly commendable.

We highly recommend Leopard Trails, where it was clear that no second has been spared in thinking through the guest experience. We look forward to visiting again with family.

Ten of us spent two nights at Yala Leopard Trails on 13th and 14th February 2021. We chose this resort as we had an assurance that they conform to health guidelines that protect their guests during the current pandemic. We were not disappointed! Before we were admitted into the resort complex, out temperatures were checked, hands sanitised, Shoes sprayed with sanitiser etc. We were assured that the bedrooms too had been sanitised after the departure of the previous occupants.
We were warmly received on arrival at the entrance and our baggage collected from our cars. After a welcome drink at the reception area, we were given a pep-talk that included tips on security, health guidelines, safari times and procedures as well as a discussion about our meal preferences. Torches would be available for use when moving to and from the bedroom tents. We were also requested not to move about in the night as the camp is situated in a wilderness area. Adequate drinking water was provided within each tent. The tents are well laid out within the property and provided us adequate privacy.
The air-conditioned tents were spacious and included clean bedding, a table, clothes rack, luggage holders and two side tables beside the beds. The toilet and washbasin were in an annex next to the main bedroom area. Everything was impeccably clean and neat. The shower with hot and cold water was outside the closed private area accessed through the rear door to the tent. The tents themselves were well sealed to prevent entry of unwanted and unwelcome small guests from the surrounding wilderness! Square type charging sockets with 230 Volt electricity was available within the tent. Throughout the night though, we could hear the sounds of peacocks and wild animals on and off.
Dhanula, a zoology majoring graduate ranger accompanied six of us on the four excursions into Yala National Park. The other four in our group travelled in another Toyota jeep. Dhanula was deeply knowledgeable and educated us on various aspects of plant and animal life within the park. We were particularly interested in leopard behaviour both within the park and in the country. He gave us a technical electronic presentation about leopards, their behaviour, territorial nature as well as techniques used in leopard identification in the evening on the 14thFebruary after returning from the park. I hugely appreciated his depth of knowledge and his conversational ability.
Last but not the least were the tasty meals provided. We opted for Sri Lankan cuisine. One of us was a complete vegetarian while we had another non-meat eater. The meals provided were tasty and of a remarkably high standard that satisfied the varied palattes of the group. Breakfast included both Sri Lankan as well as western dishes.
It was an unforgettable experience in a quiet wilderness setting experiencing the sounds of wild amongst gentle and muffled whispering murmur of rustling leaves on the trees. Thank you. We shall be back again soon!!

Leopard Trails Yala is a property that has been on my bucket list for a very long time. This quintessential camp has 6 Deluxe tents and 2 Newly renovated suites with very thoughtful plunge pools for that extra touch of luxury and comfort which was much appreciated after a game drive in Yala National Park.

Your booking comes with one free game drive and an extremely knowledgeable guide who will take care of you during your entire stay. We definitely returned home with a whole new world of knowledge on Yala and it’s resident animals. Having the game drive included in our stay was perfect since we do not have a regular guide / tracker when visiting Yala National Park And could not have been in better hands than with @hasloku (Hasantha).

Your meals are looked after during the stay and all three meals were well curated and prepared to our preferred spice level. Needless to say everything was extremely yummy! (Dessert is included as well 😉)

The entire team practiced their Covid safety measures to the letter and made us feel extremely comfortable at this volatile time of travel. The property is also 100% Eco friendly and does not use any plastic on the property. There are plenty of glass bottles provided with water for use in the room as well as a large water cooler in case you need a refill during your stay. Chilled glass water bottles are also provided whilst on the afternoon game drive.

This is definitely the place we will be staying at whenever we visit Yala in the future.. no two doubts about it!

Last but not least, I would like to say a HUGE thank you to Khulsum who assisted me with making this booking and for arranging the room of our choice, Hasantha for taking care of us during our stay and also to Suri, Chamil. Jagath and Lakshan from the F&B department who took care of all our culinary needs and In-room dining arrangements perfectly!

I stayed at Leopard Trails during a weekend in February 2021 and we booked the entire camp site for our two night stay. Pre booking communication was excellent where they understood our rooming and meal preferences, special request etc. Upon arrival we received a welcome drink, cold towels and was escorted to a cozy air-conditioned lunch where we received an in depth briefing by one of the Leopard Trails rangers. Afterwards we set off on our first game drive and more safaris followed in the next few days.

The Leopard Trails rangers don't go chasing after leopard sighting as 90% of the other jeeps do. We tried to avoid other jeeps and go on our own way. The communication between our ranger and our driver was really good. Thanks to this we had multiple leopard and even tusker sightings. The Leopard Trails rangers are very professional, knowledgeable, communicative and very respectful of nature. This makes all the difference.

The accommodation was top class. With cozy bedding, airconditioned tents, all modern room and WC amenities, we didn't feel that anything was missing. We stayed in the suite and cannot recommend that highly enough. The food was really tasty and there was always a variety at each meal.

Thank you Leopard Trails was a great stay in Yala. We will definitely be coming back.

This was not our first time at Leopard Trails and it certainly won’t be our last. What sets Leopard Trails apart is their fantastic team of safari guides that accompany you on safari.

We learnt many new facts on each new drive and they shared their stories of living and working in the jungle among these beautiful animals.

The canvas tent accommodation is world-class - Leopard Trails have been in this business for a decade and their experience is visible in all the small touches around the campsite.

Our son’s and their friends (we went in a large group) enjoyed the carefully presented junior ranger course; a must-do activity if you are travelling with young children.

I would highly recommend a stay at Leopard Trails; it’s the only way to experience Yala!

This is one very special, unique place. The tents are so comfortable and well equipped. The outside shower was brilliant, especially as if you looked up the was a tree full of monkeys quizzically watching you! The air conditioning was very efficient and welcome. In the main area of the camp the lounge and dining areas are comfortable and luxurious. The food is outstanding and more than plentiful. All these wonderful things though are secondary to the time spent in the park - we saw 6 leopards all together with three just casually strolling past the back of our truck, it was a truly awesome experience that we feel so privileged to have had. Our lovely guide, Dhanula, really was the icing on the cake for us. He was totally brilliant - not just by his constant sharing of knowledge, but by little things he did too such as making sure we had our favorite watermelon juice in the icebox for the morning drive, making us roar with laughter and just in general being great fun to be with. Thank you to the whole team for making our stay with you truly memorable.

I was part of a group of 15 who stayed at Leopard Trails Camp and we had a fantastic time. The ambience, the food and attention to details were unsurpassed. They organised a campfire one night and out door dinning by candlelight , morning coffee on the deck - lovelyThe game rangers and drivers who took us around were most skilled and the high light of the park rides was the leopard that chose to stretch and play around a mere 20 years from us. My mother who is 95 years old (I kid you not) was on the trip and enjoyed it very much and the staff were very helpful to her. it was a great experience. They took all the covid precautions - sanitising everything in sight and we felt very safe.

Some Yala visitors come with emphasis on getting a great leopard pic for a Facebook post. Nothing wrong with that. But if you’re keen for a deepened appreciation of the animals and their environment, consider a stay and safaris at Leopard Trails. Based on our recent stay in spring 2002, here are some aspects we especially appreciated.

Naturalists
Our naturalist for three Leopard Trails safaris was far and away the best we have experienced: super knowledgeable and affable, perfect English. Leopard Trails naturalists receive special training, eclipsing the spotty professionalism of Yala nature guides we have encountered elsewhere. Leopard Trails devotes portions of its revenue to research on leopard and other wildlife. It also helps fund Department of Wildlife Conservation initiatives on park management and conservation.

Setting: Tank
Leopard Trails sits on a lovely reservoir, where inundated dying trees provide habitat for really cool charismatic birds.

Location: Kataragama
Unlike most Yala resorts, Leopard Trails lies close to the temple complex and pilgrimage site in the town of Kataragama. We have visited the site on various occasions with great interest, though we did not tour it during our recent stay with Leopard Trails. Wildlife enthusiasts should consider touring the complex as a side benefit to a stay with Leopard Trails.

Location: Yala Block 1
Unlike most Yala resorts, Leopard Trails lies only minutes away from entrance to Block 1, a different entrance from the one most safaris use. This gets you quickly into a less-travelled area of the park with less red tape and delay, fewer jeeps, than you find coming through the other entrance.

Location: Yala Block 5
The more recently developed Block 5 is too far for safaris originating from most Yala resorts. From Leopard Trails, Block 5 is much more easily accessible. Again, jeeps are far less dense than in the crowded portions of Block 1. We got footage of a juvenile leopard and good looks at several different birds of prey.

We were deeply disappointed by the tired and dirty tents and cannot understand good reviews- other guests staying at the same time felt the same. Bedrooms had very old tired sisal carpets with cuts in the middle and bathroom had a ripped old piece of Lino on the floor. Taps old and rusty. Sheets had been darned and obviously very old. Mildew on the interior of the tent. Extremely poor quality fittings. Appeared to be only one decent tent which is featured on the advertisement. Outside sisal where you sat on uncomfortable chairs also very old and dirty. I would suggest putting polished concrete in a pale colour throughout including bathroom. New canvas interiors and attractive headboards using wood and rattan. Pretty rugs and cushions and importantly NEW sheets. We have had many safaris over the years and these tents the worst by far. Shall be informing our agent back in Uk of all these faults.

Dhano and Sachin were extremely good - couldn’t have been better so we had great safaris with them.
More trained staff needed in restaurant as service v slow and management there said more trained staff badly needed.

My stay at Leopard Trails was undoubtedly the best experience I have had in the Yala area. I received a very warm welcome from their staff and the team of rangers when we arrived at camp, followed by a short briefing whilst I was shown in to the tent. Their tents are super comfortable with king sized bedding, electricity, aircon, plug points and a fully equipped washroom. If you can splurge a bit more, they have suites which are more spacious with a touch of luxury. They also have an airconditioned communal area where you can read a book, browse their database or image gallery of the wildlife in Yala, hang out with fellow travelers or simply wind down.

What truly sets apart Leopard Trails is their fleet of internationally trained rangers who are a pleasure to interact with. They are knowledgeable, has a great sense of humor and true professionals in what they do. With their rangers’ company the game drives are top class.

The food was another highlight of my stay. The selection is simple but yet delicious and just right for a stay in the wild. On our second night they did an amazing bon fire lit BBQ on the deck facing the lake. Just being there breathing in the meditative sounds of nature was truly exhilarating.

I would highly recommend Leopard Trails to anyone who is looking at a truly special and memorable glamping experience in Yala or Wilpattu.

Hello! Leopard Trails is located in the dry zone jungle, so there are absolutely no leeches in the area. Leeches in Sri Lanka are only found in the hill country and rain forests. The tents are fully air conditioned so mosquito netting is not required. However if you require it, it can be arranged.
