Detailed Reviews
Nicely situated near Yala and Bundala National Parks, this hotel is a perfect base for several days. The property is lovely with 3 pools and neat gardens. The rooms are very large and comfortable and the food is great. What is missing? Fresh paint, new towels, electric outlets near the bed, power washed tiled floors, quiet ceiling fans and better trained staff.

Everything is wonderful about this place. We’ve been staying here for more than 10 years whenever we visit Kataragama.
From the time they take the bookings over the phone ( 0094114736030 ) the Front office staff, rooms staff and restaurant staff are very friendly and courteous and accommodating. They recognize us as frequent visitors and go out of their way to ensure an excellent stay for us in Kataragama.

We checked in for two nights en route to Yala on Full board basis. The first day buffet had a very vast choice and all very good second day it was atrocious..for lunch it was set menu with only a few dishes ...dinner was even worst and no choice at all in the set menu when we asked the manager the reason he said less than 15 guests they don't put out the buffet. The breakfast next day according to set menu was bread jam and eggs ...priced at LKR 2,000 + p.p as we had paid full board upfront we requested for some sausages and it was given.
The rooms were very well maintained ..4 star standard the staff was also helpful .

We went to Kataragama for the Pooja and religious observances while back.
This hotel is located close to the temple, devalaya and other religious areas but not within the city limits, therefore, the guests have the freedom for a calm environment while being relatively closer to the pooja areas. The hotel staff was very knowledgeable on the process in the temple and the devalaya. On our request they introduced us to a guide to assist us in those processes, which was very helpful.
Although the hotel is located in a very good location and has a good knowledge of the religious matters (which is one of the main reasons to visit Kataragama), there is a big room for improvement in some areas.
The main issue was the poor service. If there were only one or two people in the hotel with poor service, it is a personal issue (issue with that particular employee), however, if majority of the staff is providing an extremely poor service, it is an issue with the management. The staff was friendly. However, we noticed that they lack the training required for hotel staff. One example is that it took them over one our since our arrival around 3.00 pm to prepare our room. Sadly this period was not a busy period either. From what we noticed one family checked out during our stay in the lobby and another was waiting to be checked in similar to us.
The room's cleanliness has to improve significantly. Some of the room furniture were broken (e.g. bed, tv, one chair). Hotel did not provide WIFI (not even for a fee). Some of the power sockets in the room were not working. The toilet amenities looked to be collected from different places and brands, and we felt that one time use bottles were refilled.
The buffets did not have much variety however some of the items in the buffets were good in flavor.
We booked directly and I strongly recommend against it. The direct booking was over two times more expensive than the prices given here.
Anyway if you are visiting Kataragama sorely for religious matters, this hotel seems like a good place.

Best customer service in all hotels in Sri Lanka. Staff at all levels go out of their way to take care of you. For example, I needed a special adapter cord to use my sleeping device and house keeping manager Priyantha ensured that a solution was presented to solve the issue. Another example was at the dinner buffet the food was catered western style so I casually asked one of the staff about asking the chef if a curry can be made and in a matter of ten minutes out came a fresh fish curry. Really made my evening. The young man Bhanuka who manages the pool is another person who pays attention to the customer, he came in earlier than normal the morning of my departure so the pool could get cleaned by 6:45 am so I could swim early. Finally I have to say Rosen has the best breakfast in the southern coast. The hoppers are wonderful and crispy! I love the leadership by front office manager Sudesh to rally the entire staff to focus on customer with a high energy.

We have booked 5 rooms.
Good welcoming and our reservation was handled very well. No welcome drink service.
Outside weather was too hot & appreciate welcome drink & a cold towel.
Rooms were big and need some attention to maintain the standard. Towels were old.
Cleaning was good.
Breakfast is average compared to BB package charges. There was fresh papaya juice serve on the table & found fresh fruit also papaya & watermelon only. In the restaurant There we’re Senior manager who was active & interacting with the guests. Other staff not much interacting & there were not much liveliness.
Spa was not operating it was closed.
Hospitality should be provide service/ experience.
At the hotel entrance motor bike hit my car from behind there was no courtesy from the hotel management to see anything to be assist so I found it very poor way of caring the guest.

We spent 2 nights at this hotel and it is one of the nicest hotels in Sri Lanka. The rooms and bathrooms were very spacious. The only complaint on the room is no electric outlets close to the bed.
The chefs in their restaurant were excellent and created great meal options. The restaurant wait staff could use more training.
Beautiful pool and great spa facility. Both my husband and I had massages. Laundry service is available and reasonably priced. I did not have one sock returned but luckily it was given accidentally to someone on our tour group.
This hotel is definitely worth booking if you are in the area.

This Hotel was a bit disappointing. It looks lovely and the staff are friendly but the restaurant service was very slow and it felt like no one was really in charge. The staff all over the Hotel didn't seem to know what they were doing and, annoyingly, the electronic keys to our room didn't work most of the time.

This hotel needs to do a renovation now. I was there sometimes back and comparatively to that time now it is not up to the standards. The buffet they need to improve a lot by adding more items and the tasty of the food also need to improve. Totally disappointed after visiting this time especially the buffet (Since this hotel is known as a 4 star). On my first visit, there was a huge buffet with more varieties and the food was very delecious. If they don't improve these areas, my honest feedback is not worth the money you spend.

+1
The initial charm of Mandara Rosen quickly faded. While the grand architecture and spacious rooms offered promise, a closer look revealed significant issues. The rooms themselves were furnished with dated, stained furniture and an unpleasant odor lingered throughout all three rooms our group occupied. Disappointing for the price point.
The food situation was a complete disaster. First day, we were served a bland vegetarian spread of multiple root vegetables - tempered beetroot with greens, tempered radishes, tempered potatoes, and an overcooked gourd curry with dhal curry. Who wants multiple root vegetables dishes for one meal? Our order was even messed up, with chicken served instead of fish.
The buffet dinner wasn't much better, offering a variety of tasteless dishes. The coffee situation was the worst. A near-empty pot sat out, and upon requesting a refill, the server grudgingly brought back a pot that was clearly just watered-down leftover coffee. The entire restaurant staff seemed unfriendly and unhelpful, with no greetings or smiles. Next day, breakfast offered more options, but most things were still flavorless.
For the price we paid, this stay was a huge letdown. This appears to be a management issue, and it's a shame to see such a beautiful place go downhill. I would not recommend the Mandara Rosen and won't be returning.
