I had been looking forward to staying at the Old Phoenix for a few years now, having stayed at Loutro and Hora Sfakia in the past, and having heard so much about it. After a night in Loutro last week I walked over to the Finix Bay, and asked for a room at the Old Phoenix. It took them 15...

We found the standard of the rooms to be excellent. The big downside of this hotel is the quality of the staff, all but one of the staff ( a mature staff member) were unfriendly and not at all welcoming. Unfortunately we only met the only friendly member of staff when we were leaving. When asking a question or ordering...

We flew into Chania on the north side of Crete, took a taxi down through the mountains to Svakia, then a ferry around to Loutro before final leg of the journey on another ferry to The Old Phoenix, which is nestled in its own bay. Was it worth the effort? Yes, of course! So what's here? TV - no. Radio...

On our walk from Loutro to Marmara we came to the Old Phoenix where we enjoyed a nice cool drink and a small snack while looking out over the beautiful harbour. On the way back we decided to eat something more substantial there. The first 3 things we asked for from the menu were not available. And toast could not...

The Old Phoenix and the small bay around it is a truly magnificent place. We have returned there almost every year since our first visit in 2003. Do not expect haute cuisine but simple good food as the family also states on the website. However, Loutro is just a 20-25 min away, if you need more choice as is Nikos...

A beautiful lonely beach, that can be reached only be boat. Even in the peak of the high season (we were there on August) there are not more than about 10 families. All you can do there is swim, read and eat in the lovely taverna. If you feel like, you can walk 20 minutes (or take a kayak) to...

Tiny beach with lovely clear water. Restaurant has great food and a lovely balcony to sit on in the evening sun. Only downside is rather nasty poo/rotting smell on beach -- never discovered why!! You can walk there from Loutro past amazing ruins and lots of goats. Or you can canoe round if you are feeling energetic!

The hotel is in a lovely quiet bay 10 minutes by boat from Loutro. It is better to stay here than in Loutro which is crowded and noisy, but it is possible to find more authentic experiences elsewhere. You are a trapped audience and you get the feeling that their main concern is to make as much money from you...

I just cannot understand the negative reviews for this place - it is amazing. We were initially booked into a hotel in Loutro. After staying in a beautiful hotel in Chania Town I wanted to cry when I saw the place we had booked. It was beyond basic and not particularly clean. Loutro was also a huge disappointment. It's just...

This is the second visit here. We were staying in The north of the island and came here with friends for 1 night. The accommodation is spotlessly clean but very basic. Food and drink excellent and very inexpensive. We used the sun beds and canoes for which there is a small charge but well worth every penny. A very relaxing...
