Travellers' Choice
Located in the remote Yasawa Islands, Oarsman’s Bay Lodge is situated on a stunningly pristine beach that stretches for miles. Fringed by the magnificent turquoise waters of the lagoon and beautiful high peaked hills reigning over the background, this is one of the Yasawa's most magnificent locations. Here you will have the opportunity to sink your feet into one of Fiji’s most glorious white sand beaches, relax in the outdoor restaurant and bar, lounge in one of the hammocks scattered, swim and snorkel in the protected marine area and even join in a game of volleyball with friendly Fijian staff. You’ll be hard pressed to find a more idyllic location. The resort is unique in that it’s owned and operated by the Mataqali Natia (group of families) and their Chief from the nearby Nacula village. Offering you the chance to see and experience their family and way of life is what staying at Oarsman’s is all about.

It seems like so long ago with all that has happened, but sitting here Re telling stories with friends of how special this place is. Not my first trip to Fiji, always trying different places, but will definitely head back here. Not over run, we felt like we had the resort to ourselves most of the time. We were gathering for a beautiful friends milestone birthday and it couldn’t have been a better location. I was the only one to take kids so we had a joined two bedroom cabin on another beach to the other side of the central meeting area, so as to allow the “adults” peace and quiet. By day I snorkelled with the kids, swam out to the swim platform and slide, took a boat ride across to another little island, went for walks, and as the day got long my two little ones drank coconuts and I snuck in a beverage or two for myself by the beach. The hospitality was on point from the moment we stepped off the seaplane. From the beautiful greeting song, ice cold coconut, warm smiles the whole way through, friendly babysitters to help out, the guitar by night... nothing was too much trouble. Dean our host, (the owner?) was around to assist with what ever we needed at all times. I can not recommend Oarsman’s bay enough! Thankyou to Dean, Benny and their amazing team!

I have stayed at oarsmans twice. Once was about 16 years ago and the second time just this month. There is definitely some information you need to know before staying here. Firstly, Oarsmans is located near the top of the Yasawa islands and it took about 5 hours to get there on the boat from Denarau. We chose to utilize the ‘Captain’s Lounge’ on the Yasawa flyer (and we are so glad we paid the extra money to travel that distance in comfort with free snacks and drinks, including alcohol). Due to the remote location (and it definitely feels remote compared to staying anywhere else in Fiji), you have to pay for the meal plan at oarsmans. There are no shops or anything on the island where you can buy food or snacks. So the meal plan is understandably non-negotiable. Ok. The meal plan is tough if you are staying more than a few nights. It’s fish for lunch and dinner, and simple things for breakfast (where you help yourself). Meals are at a scheduled time as well, so you always eat with everyone staying there as well. My partner and I struggled with the food after a while. Our stay was probably too long in hindsight. We couldn’t stomach soo much fish for soo long (even though we both usually enjoy fish). They also serve cake at almost every meal, including breakfast. I personally struggled more with the meal plan because I’ve had a gastric bypass (years ago) meaning I can only eat a small amounts of food at one time, but then I would get very hungry an hour later, so I lost a considerable amount of weight during my stay (waiting for the next meal time). Keep this in mind if you don’t typically eat 3 large meals a day and prepare by packing food! There is no fridge or microwave in your room though. The chef did a really great job at trying to be creative with the fish dishes, but the type of fish didn’t change much (mackerel). I loved the fish tikka, but it was only served once during our stay. It also meant that for me, $99/day for the meal plan per person was exorbitant! With the meal plan as well as the accommodation, we paid in total, $450 per night! Now paying $450/night is expensive for Fiji. But you pay for the location. Oarsmans is located in a truely beautiful part of Fiji with one of the best beaches I have seen right at your door step. The beachfront Bure was amazing. Very comfortable and air conditioned (which is a must at this time of year)! The bed was super comfortable and we had a lot of space in the bure. No issues whatsoever with bugs or insects. Never used insect repellant. The main hall where you eat is not air conditioned, and I struggled eating in the heat/humidity most meals. They have hot water, but I could not get the shower to be anything other than super (too) hot or cold. So we had cold showers every day (not too bad as the weather was hot). We did the reef hopper excursion one morning which involves snorkelling 3 reefs near the island (by a small boat). Lost of sea life and reef sharks to see. Great experience. But most of the time we swam at the Oarsmans beach because it was so beautiful and also had great snorkelling. There is no pool or kids activities here. We didn’t see any children during our stay. Because of the remoteness and heat, we spent our time reading, swimming and relaxing in our air conditioned Bure. It was too hot to do much else this time of year for people who hate the heat and humidity. And there isn’t much else to do here. If you have a Bure, you get 2 designated deck/sun chairs outside your hut, however it is not signed or mentioned (during group check-in) that they are for the Bure guests only, so we regularly had to ask the backpackers staying in the dorm to nicely vacate our chairs. The staff are lovely and were always extremely approachable if we needed anything. We ended up cutting our stay shorter than planned because it was just too remote for us and we were struggling with the food after 11 fish meals (I’ll include some pics). My partner and I have visited Fiji about 15 times between us and have stayed in soo many places in Fiji (both on the mainland and on islands). Oarsmans is definitely a different type of experience compared to other resorts. The place has barely changed in 16 years, but with the new resort next door and the extra boat activity and tourists, the water is not as clear as it was back in the early to mid 2000s. They have done an excellent job at refurbishing the accommodation though! And added air conditioning (which is a must in the hotter months). It was great going back, but $450/night (which includes the compulsory meal plan) was just a little too steep of a price for what you get. It’s a very small resort and you barely see anyone else on the beach or around the place, except when you all get together when the meal drum goes off. So a great place to relax in privacy. We took the sea bus (and not the Yasawa flyer) back to the mainland because it was cheaper and faster, however we will never do that again. It takes you to another port 45 mins drive away from Denarau and it’s not air conditioned or comfortable at all. All in all, be prepared if you’re planning on staying here. Prepare for the remoteness and the limited food options. There’s not much to do that doesn’t involve the ocean. Make sure you have a lot of books to read and that you enjoy your own company or the company of your travelling companion. And definitely reconsider long stays if you don’t eat fish!

Bula LeesaS_12, Apologies for the delay. This is a longer review than what we are used to, and so we wanted to make sure we covered it properly. First of all thank you for choosing to stay with us again at Oarsman's Bay Lodge and for taking the time to share your experience with us! With the meal plan, if we are given notice by the future guests, we are able to accommodate it to meet their dietary requirements. The meal plan consists of buffet breakfast, lunch, afternoon treat, and a three course dinner, which is considered by our guests of value for the amount we charge. Some of our produce is grown on our island, Nacula Island, and even in our own farm and gardens. We do serve fish in lots of our meals, but that is because our team create local meals for you. The good thing though is the fish is fresh, caught daily by our local fishermen, and we do them in many different variations and flavours (as you mentioned). We also have snacks we offer at the bar. We are sorry to hear you didn't enjoy the meals, particularly due to health issues. We hope you would have mentioned that to our team during your stay. We do our best to ensure our guests get great quality foods, but also get to experience the true meals that us Fijians experience. Oarsman's Bay Lodge is also a personal and private lodge, not the typical resort with many rooms and westernised meals. We believe that our guests come to us to feel a different cultural experience, and to connect with the true side of Fiji. Hence why we are located so far away, and are considered a rural tropical destination in the heart of the Yasawa Islands. The bures we offer have recently been renovated. They are generous in size and should be comfortable to stay in. We create personalised pathways for each bure to Nalova Bay, with white soft sand. We have only 10 bures in the lodge, so you are also much more comfortable and have more room to relax. We also do offer our guests a number of different activities on a daily basis, activities not just at the lodge, but also nearby islands and waters. For example, the Sawa-I-Lau Caves. We also have a number of water equipment that we offer our guests for free, to enjoy the beautiful waters of Nalova Bay. You are right in saying that the lodge is private and personal. Guests do have to accept that if they come to stay with us, they won't have the same access to shops, consumer goods, and the internet. But that is what makes it so grand. Oarsman's Bay offers much more than the standard resorts, and by embracing our way of living is what makes our guests' experience a genuinely enjoyable one. We hope you are well rested during these uncertain times. We will also take what you have shared with us and make sure we use that to see if we can continue to develop and improve our guest experience. Vinaka vaka levu, Dean and the entire team at Oarsman's Bay Lodge.

I thoroughly enjoyed my two night stay at Oarsman's Bay Lodge. I stayed in the dorm, which had about ten beds. The room was air-conditioned, which I was extremely grateful for, and the communal facilities served their purpose, even if they were a bit basic. The reception/dining area was a friendly and relaxed place to hang out at. The lodge itself was clean, and there was lots of different equipment available to hire free of charge. I made use of the snorkeling gear, and it was so worth it for the incredible views of coral and fish I was able to get under the water. I also went on one of the paid excursions to the local village of Nacula, where we visited a local school aswell as the village itself. It was a memorable experience and definitely worth the small fee I had to pay. As for the food, it was AMAZING! I honestly could not fault the food. It was all fresh and had definitely been prepared with love and attention. I was slightly apprehensive about the food before visiting, but it was worth the money and there was even 'cake time' every afternoon. Overall, I can't thank the team at Oarsman's Bay Lodge enough for making me feel at home in Fiji during my stay. My stay here had to be the highlight of my time in Fiji and I would love to return at some point, but I left with lots of amazing memories aswell as some new friends for life, Vinaka!

A beautiful island, with beautiful views and the staff at Oarsmans were always so friendly and helpful ! The meals were delicious and my partner who generally doesn't eat fish loved the meals they served, it's all so fresh and just cooked so beautifully. We went snorkeling from the shore in front of our bure and it's only about 10 meters out then you start seeing coral and different coloured fish and starfish ! We loved our bure and our stay was just so wonderful, to disconnect from the modern world and just bask in and appreciate paradise.
