Under Canvas Grand Canyon has received a mix of feedback, with guests praising the hotel's cleanliness and the array of amenities, which add a touch of comfort to the outdoor experience. The relaxed ambiance, complete with nightly music and fire pits, has been a highlight for many. However, some visitors felt the rooms had issues and that the value didn't match the cost. While the service was often commended for its friendliness, critiques were aimed at food service efficiency and quality. The location, though convenient, left a few travelers yearning for more impressive views.

Our family of two adults and two adult children reserved a deluxe tent + hive (teepee) for two nights while visiting the Grand Canyon. The staff was friendly and helpful and they are taking COVID seriously so we felt safe there. The one downside is it was unseasonably cool during our visit, and there was a local fire ban in place, so we couldn't use the wood stove. It was very cold that first night and we hardly slept. Wish we'd have known and could've packed warm pajamas. The second night was much better. We got take-out food from the cafe twice and it was delicious -- my corn and black bean quesadilla was huge and yummy! The cafe provides coffee/hot water in the morning. We were still able to have s'mores around the gas fire pit. I would recommend taking a sleep mask (cheap from Walmart) if you need darkness to sleep; the white tents get bright with the morning sun. This location is a bit of a drive from the Canyon, but we felt it was worth it to have such a unique and memorable experience.

My partner and I just came back from a North AZ trip, which included a 2 night stay at Under Canvas. All I can say is: WOW!

The service is incredible. From the day I was checking in, I received a courtesy text from a live human letting me know they're available for questions and that they were expecting me.

Check in was a breeze, and Hannah gave us a brief tour of the main facility where there was a small gift shop, snacks and drinks for purchase and where breakfast and dinner are served. They also served beer, wine and batched cocktails.
Coffee, tea, hot chocolate and water station are available 24-7. While there is plenty of seating inside the spacious central tent, the magic is the outdoor seating where some stations have fire pits and others have heat lamps. There was evening entertainment both nights of our stay (Friday and Saturday). Plenty of board games and nightly smores. We did not do any tours (which they can book on your behalf), but they had a map available for the grand canyon and gave us lots of helpful recommendations of what to do. A big thank you to Brett who made me a fresh pot of decaf coffee every morning since I am 25 weeks pregnant, and limiting caffeine.

While the accommodations are very comfortable and lux, a few things for travelers to note:
1) There is no electricity in the tents. In the tents are battery charged lamps and fans. There are 2 battery packs that have USB ports to charge your phones. There is no mini fridge or coffee makers in the room which leads to...
2) It was 33F in the evening over the weekend. Blistering cold for my Floridian blood. There is a wood fire stove, but if someone isn't feeding the fire often at night it will be super chilly. Their bedding is plenty warm, but keep in mind to dress warm for bed.
3) In the communal outdoor area, while there are firepits and heat lamps, there isn't enough to cover the majority of tables and seating. Dress warm and consider bringing a blanket from the room.
4) They do not sell bottled water, only refillable metal bottles. Consider bringing your own bottles and refill at the water station.
5) the shower water does get warm, however I still recommend you shower during the day...when its nice and hot in the tent! The water in the sink DOES NOT get hot.
6) splurge for the bathroom in the tent. just do it.
7) check in/arrive before the sun goes down. They do have someone on site 24 hours, but its pitch black in the middle of nowhere and its much easier to check in and get your stuff to the tent when there is day light.

I'll start with the positives. Aesthetically, the campsite looks great and makes for fantastic photos. The ambiance is relaxing, and we enjoyed star-gazing and having the complimentary s'mores and hot drinks on our porch at night.

With that said, we found the experience to be not accessible for disabled guests. I called ahead of booking to ask about accessibility (number of stairs for the tent, walking distance from the parking, etc.) and was essentially told it should be fine. I'm disappointed that this was downplayed by the staff when booking and checking in, as there was no accommodation to ensure that the parking closest to our tent was reserved, despite Under Canvas knowing that we needed a short walking distance. This also prevented our entire party from going to the main lobby tent at night to eat in and enjoy the common area, as this may have led to us losing our spot next to our tent.

While our party was okay with the limited stairs, it would be a much better experience if there were 1 or 2 accessible tents closer to the main lobby/common area with ramps that could be booked by disabled guests.

Additionally, we felt that the room had not been cleaned thoroughly before our arrival (specifically the bathroom and the wood-burning stove). Understand this is still technically "camping" but since it's "GLAMping" there's still a certain level expected from the cleanliness, especially during these COVID times. With the stove, we suspect that it hadn't been cleaned thoroughly as it produced way too much smoke inside the tent, making it hard to breathe.

Overall, this was a unique experience and clearly better than regular camping but, in my opinion, there's a lot of room for improvement given the costs of staying here.

Under Canvas is a very unique experience. The tents are rustic, but comfortable with a nice bed, wood burning stove, toilet, shower, and sink. The night sky is beautiful and you can see the Milky Way thanks to the dark sky ordnances in the area. The staff are very friendly and helpful. Thank being said, you will not receive house keeping during your stay and due to the remote location will eat breakfast and dinner at the camp site. The town where the camp is located has mostly fast food and not much selection making the camp your best option. You are not allowed to bring in outside food to the camp to help keep rats and other critters from coming into the camp site. The on site restaurant has a good selection and does provide some vegetarian options. Being that you will pay $450 per night at this location, we felt breakfast or an evening cocktail and snacks should have been included in the price. We also thought a fresh set of towels would not be too much to ask for since it was cold and rainy during our stay with no hopes of towels ever drying. House keeping is on hold due to Covid, but considering everything is outside and hardly anyone at the camp was wearing masks, why not provide house keeping? We were hoping for more of a bed & breakfast / glamping kind of feel, but we left feeling like we paid a considerable amount of money for not much service.

Under Canvas Grand Canyon is charging a premium to stay there, but you're sacrificing a lot to stay here.

The website says it’s 30 minutes from the GC South Rim, which is correct. The campgrounds are on the backside of the Valle Airport. Nothing special about the location.

It’s really a terrible value. It was nice to have a flushable toilet, sink and hot shower in the tent. I’m not sure that constitutes a $425 per night charge after all of the taxes and fees. Also, why is there a $34 per night campsite fee? It’s hardly a resort. There’s no pool, no gym, no WiFi etc. The fee is justified because "other hotels charge it". Under Canvas is hardly a hotel. Also, "because of Covid" they wouldn't clean your tent.

The Holiday Inn in Tusayan has an indoor pool, hot tub, offers, free breakfast, is 5 minutes from the park entrance, WiFi, daily housekeeping all for half the price.

I stayed here overnight in a Deluxe Tent with shower and toilet before visiting Grand Canyon the next day. This was my first "glamping" experience and I would not return. I can find a better outdoor overnight experience for $500 a night. The crew was great during check in, taking me to my tent in the golf cart, explaining how to work the stove for heat, etc. However, a few things need attention for future guests. 1. improve the service at the restaurant with faster order taking and attention to customers waiting over 10 minutes with only a line of two. 2. Serve the food hot, not cold. 3. Have coffee pots filled in the morning with staff checking for empty pump containers and not having to ask for more coffee, then wait for a pot to be brewed and filled up at 7 am. Is it asking too much for 2 coffee pots that can be rotated? I opted for tea and left. 4. provide real flatware for eating versus plastic utensils that fill up the landfill. 5. equip each tent with a "free" water bottle that can be filled at the public tent versus pushing the expensive vwateor obottleat the restaurant . 6. be clear in your advertisement that there are NO HIKING TRAILs from your tents or the site and you need to drive outside of the Under Canvas site that is very remote and land in the middle of no where. 7. PLEASE use fresh marshmallows and graham crackers for the s'mores experience. Mine were so hard and stale that I did not enjoy this fireside activity. 8. Could you add an optional weight to the shower pull to assist with constant running water for at lleasta minute versus pulling the chain with one hand and soaping up with the other?

This was our first glamping experience. We travelled as a family, with our 11 and 9 year old, and had a deluxe suite tent with an attached hive (which is basically a small tent with only 2 twin beds in it) - the suite had the toilet, shower, sink and little warming stove which made it feel quite comfortable. Unfortunately for us, there was a fire ban in effect, so we couldn’t use the stove at all and the nights are very “fresh” - on our beginning of July night, the temperature got down to mid 40s, plus there was a cold wind, which made it feel even colder. The bedding was ample and comfortable, so there is no fault of Under Canvas there, nevertheless it was quite cold and not entirely comfortable.

On the overall minus side, the sheer number of tents and how close they are together leaves a bit of a parking lot feel in places. It really depends on the location of your tent as to how much of a “camping” ambiance you will actually get.
In addition, the tents are fairly close together, and if you, like we did, have neighbours who came to hang out (not even party) into the night, the sound travels extremely well through the camp and it is a bit annoying, because you can hear everything at full volume.

On the plus side, the food was excellent, fresh, flavourful and healthy and the staff kind and eager to accommodate (including making coffee for me at approximately 5:15 in the morning, due to my extremely early riding habits - thanks Pete!).

To sum it up, definitely worth a stay, but consider the position of your tent and maybe avoid getting the hive (and hope you will be able to use the stove!)

Glamping here is a fun way to travel if you want to get away from the busy Village at Grand Canyon. the location is 25 minutes from the park entrance, The individual tents and main tents are wonderful, everything clean and smores under the stars around a firepit was a highlight. Problem is this location is extremely understaffed. The staff all were awesome people but there were not enough of them to handle the checkin at reception (we waited 20 minutes for someone who then was busy handling other guests while he checked us in) and we waited over 45 minutes to get our dinner order. Loved that we had our own bathroom and hot water to shower, BUT there is only ice cold water for the sink and our hands hurt for hours after using the sink in the morning. We slept well except that you have to wake up several times to put logs in the wood burning stove to keep the tent warm and at 3am I woke up freezing, the fire was out and it was 37 degrees in there and no way was I about to try and relight the stove since it smoked up the room the night before during that process. They provide plenty of blankets although we still were really cold during the night. We appreciate that recovery from COVID likely is a reason for the understaffing issues and the staff did do their best given their overload.

Under Canvas locations have become somewhat of a Bucket List ever since the first great experience with them. They’re incredibly dog friendly, have everything set up for you when you get there, and offer on- and off-site activities to fill out your trip with.

Our tent was amazing and had plenty of privacy. It was the first time reserving a tent with a bathroom, which if you’re looking for a more relaxed getaway is worth the extra money, but the communal bathrooms have always been spotless.

The only bump in the stay was the on-site food. At the Grand Canyon location, there are not any grills for personal use, so the line for food (and drinks) got long quick and the wait time for food after ordering was longer than we had anticipated it to be. Given the remote location (again, perfect for the stars!) I would pick up something light or eat on the way out of the NP before heading back to camp.
