Detailed Reviews
This was our second visit to The Free House Bungalows. We left with mixed feelings about this place. The photos are clever as they make it look more bright and luxurious than it is in reality. The accommodation is BASIC, we found it clean and the mosquito nets are a bonus. The rooms are dark and no chairs or place to sit could be a serious pain if there was bad weather. Luckily we had pretty good weather so didn't spend much time in the rooms. The hammocks outside the rooms were enjoyed and the atmosphere was fairly relaxed. Some staff were lovely (the massage lady for example was very sweet and gave a good massage on the beach).
We had breakfast at the restaurant every day as the food was nice and it was convenient. We would have eaten there for lunch every day if it was not for the fact that at every meal I had to question the price charged as it was always more than it should have been according to menu price. There were 6 of us so we usually ordered a mix of things. Having to check the bill against the menu and then confront the woman at the bar (who was not very friendly) was quite stressful and made us not want to eat there. So my advise is to check your bill carefully as mistakes seem to be made easily. (we did not find this to be the case elsewhere in Ko Samui or Ko Tao, as after this we always checked our bills and kept a mental total)
As for the location, it suited us as it was not busy and there were a few sun beds and umbrellas provided. The sea is so warm though not very clear and seems safe to swim for families. I found the water sports stuff located a short walk up the beach e.g. banana and speed boat for example, spoiled the tranquility but I guess there's a business to be made and it was not continuous noise so bearable.
We walked to fisherman's village from there most evenings and it was fine about 20 to 30 minutes and there is a kind of pavement so that was ok.
To summarise the place is value for money but or experience at the restaurant put us off returning after our trip to Ko Tao and we went to Mae Nam instead.

If you want to stay in a well priced traditional Thia resort this is the place.
The rooms are very basic and have nowhere inside to sit, but the bed is comfortable and the rooms are cleaned every two days. No wardrobes or storage space was a bit of a problem but not one to stop you visiting.
Outside the rooms you can lie in your hammock reading or sit on the balcony, and in the heat of the day this was wonderful. The walkway between the rooms is just a beautiful spot to sit on your balcony and relax. At night you cannot read inside though because of the poor lighting, but normally this would not be a problem, however we were there during the terrible floods in march, so there was nothing else to do but read and the rooms even during the day were too dark to do it and it was too wet to sit outside. Plus you had to walk through water which was ankle high to get in and out of the rooms. This would not however be typical in any way as normally the rain drains away quickly, this was a once off occurrence.
However it did force us to move to another resort with airconditioning and lighting and the normal conveniences of a beach resort, but we would have continued to stay here if the weather had been normal. I enjoyed the atmosphere of the resort, the people and the position.
The restaurant served probably the best food we had in Samui, and we ate out lots. We ate here even after we had moved to another resort.
The position is lovely, a nice quiet beach, easy walk to the Fishermans Village, nice restaurants around and easy to get in and out of Chaweng or Mae Nom just down the road.
If you want a no frills, relaxed, friendly and definitely well priced place to stay...you will enjoy Free House.

Stayed here 3 nights in an air conditioned bungalow. The rooms and grounds were clean. Staff was friendly and helpful. It's right on the beach with a restaurant and bar facing it. We ended up eating at the restaurant most of the time because we found that the food was surprisingly better there than some of the restaurants we ate at Chaweng. Wifi only works in the restaurant area.
My only complaint was that there was a sign posted in our bungalow stating not to bring in food to reduce ants and pests and also we would be charged for bringing outside drinks to the beachfront/restaurant area. Also, there were two dogs (not sure if strays or the owners) that would lounge around the restaurant area. It was kind of distracting and unsanitary if you think about it to, to be eating breakfast and having a dog sitting next to you begging for a handout.

My boyfriend and I have been travelling around Thailand for about a month now, so we have stayed at a fair share of guest houses and hotels along our way. I booked 'Free House' after reading some great tripadvisor reviews and was keen to stay on Bophut beach. Prior to our stay at 'Free House' we had been staying at a hotel called 'Sundays Sanctuary Resort and Spa' also in Bophut - it's rooms were about the same price as 'Free House'. We arrived at 'Free House' and it was obvious that this would have once been a bustling hotspot on the beach, but I believe it has lost it's magic. We were asked to pay upon check in, however their credit card machine wouldn't process my card so I was forced to pay with cash (which was a bit annoying). We had been put in probably the worst room, it was the farthest away from the beach...but we were still excited to be near the beach! On the wall of your bungalow there is a list of rules and regulations including: no eating or drinking in the room, you may not take the hotels towels onto the beach you must buy your own and you cannot put toilet paper in the toilet - these were just a few of the many rules that were slightly irritating. But the room was sufficient with everything you would need - if you ask for a double bed be aware that it is only two single beds pushed together and is not very long (my boyfriend is quite tall and was longer than the bed). We went down to the restaurant for some lunch, firstly the customer service in general is terrible, in particular at the restaurant. The food is average and VERY overpriced, the restaurant next door is far cheaper and looks a lot nicer. We then headed down to the beach, to hopefully have a refreshing swim. However, unlike all the other hotels along Bophut beach, 'Free House' does not have sun beds or towels for its guests along the beach. Actually it's restaurants table and chairs take up the majority of its room on the beach - so we decided to go find another spot. We spent the afternoon at another part of Bophut beach nearby and decided to go elsewhere for dinner. It was what happened when we were about to sleep that really turned us off 'Free House'. Whilst laying in bed we began to feel as if we were being bitten by something...sure enough when we turned on the lights we had tiny bite marks all over our legs and arms. We were certain it was nothing like a mosquito, and knew it had to be some sort of bed bug or mite that was living in the mattress. I had read about bed bugs before coming to Thailand, and knew that the small brown splotches on the mattress were evidence of bedbugs. For us this was unacceptable - considering the price. We went to find the owner, after knocking a ridiculous number of times an extremely drunk man came to answer. We told him about the bugs in the bed and he said that it was impossible. He told us that they air the mattresses outside in-between guests and that it was too clean for bedbugs. He also kept trying to tell is that we had been bitten by mosquitos outside, but we knew these were not mosquito bites! I told him that I was very unhappy with having to be eaten alive all night by bed bugs and he simply said there was nothing he could do, he couldn't even offer us a sheet (there is only a under sheet on the bed and not one to cover yourself with). I don't know whether it was the fact that he was blind drunk or that he just wanted us to leave him alone, but he was very unhelpful. By this point it was about 10:30, and with nothing else to do, we went back to our room, lay out sarongs on the bed to try and avoid being bitten. But this did not stop them - we hardly got any sleep and woke up with bites all over us. Tired and very annoyed we knew we did not want to spend another night being bitten and uncomfortable and decided that we would attempt to get our money back so we could find a hotel elsewhere. We spoke to the lady who own's 'Free House' (who by the way is very rude) and told her that there were bed bugs or something in the mattress biting us - like the man she said it was impossible. We showed her our bites, and she kept just walking away from us, it was obvious she didn't want to try and solve the problem in anyway. We told her we didn't want to spend another night being bitten and asked if we could get our money back for the next three nights. She refused, saying it wasn't her fault, and if she didn't give us our money back she would lose money - we argued with her and told her it wasn't our fault either! But she wasn't having any of it, and by the end we were left with nothing else to say and were forced to just walk away having lost about $90 AUD. We then returned to the previous hotel we had stayed at 'Sundays Sanctuary' also in Bophut, however not on the beach. For the same price, the rooms are enormous and very clean, it also has a wonderful pool and is very serene. Compared to this, 'Free House' is very overpriced and does not offer the same quality - you may think 'Free House' is cheap, but for what you get it is definitely not. Our experience with 'Free House' was terrible and we were so glad to getaway from those bedbugs and rude owners! My advice is don't stay here, there are better places in Bophut!

I arrived on the 27th May at sunset. Dumped my gear in my bungalow. Went for a quick swim. Then found the next morning that while I was out briefly "some one" went in and stole $300us, and 10000baht from my room. The staff refused any liability, even though no one else was around at the time of the theft. They were also really rude and unhelpful. No not stay here.

Since it had been over 20 years since last visit to Koh Samui we were a bit apprehensive and feared that all charm was long gone, but Free House and Bhoput beach turned out to be the perfect place to acclimatize and get into the mood of our Thai islandhopping-adventure post- and pre-flight. From the moment we were dropped off with the taxi from the airport, the ever-present lovely Roong and the rest of the staff were there to play with the kids, chat, whip up the most amazing dishes (duck breast in tamarind sauce, anyone?) at very reasonable prices even for Thailand and in general being welcoming, helpful and great.
We ended up staying an extra week, but had to move from the family option, a double bungalow with fans and a door between the bedrooms and upgrade to one aircon bungalow with a double and a single mattress placed next to each other. Very cozy if you're in a camping or back-packing state of mind. Obviously this is not the place for people craving valet-service and an on-site spa, but the bungalows are clean and quiet, no noise from airplanes, clubs or bars,a rarity at Samui, nice and basic. Warm shower, tolerable mattresses, good wardrobes, safe, a hammock on the porch, all facing a small pathway leading up the restaurant.
The restaurant was packed every night thanks to the super chef, and while the adults were enjoying the sunset and a glass of wine, the kids could safely play on the golden beach. Sand like demerara sugar and still water at this time of the year made swimming and lounging in the water easy. Lunch was bought from the grilled corn-guy who walks the beach with his portable grill and cuts an ice cold pineapple to perfect pieces, and the Wat Po-trained grandma who sits at the platform just below the restaurant delivered the best Thai massage on the island in the afternoon.
Restlessness was easily cured with a little walk down the beach to Fisherman Village for retail therapy and ice cream in the charming old chinese wooden houses which gets even more child-friendly every Friday with markeds in the street and no cars. When we tore ourselves away and left for Koh Phangan (Thong Naipan taxiboat from Mae Nam harbour, a five minutes taxi trip from Free House and the best way to reach Haad Rin and the eastern beaches of Phangan) it was with a heavy heart and full stomachs. We will definitely return, after 7 weeks on the road in the area, Free House still rules with regards to good people, great food and an oh so needed right now classic thai massage.

The staff in the reservation is not nice to customer.
And I ask her some question like "can I rent a hair dryer?"
She always answer me with bad face.
And the guest stay the lobby to use the wifi ,the staff just close the light without to tell them.
The room is cheap, but the staff is not nice to guest.

Possibly the rudest staff we have yet encountered. We always pay at check out, this is the norm to us. The guy at the bar said ok. After coming back from a day out, 'Tip' demanded us to pay now, no please or thank you..just damn right rude. Wouldn't have been an issue if she would had asked nicely.
After going to the lounge to get some wifi, more staff members just grunting 'menu' 'drinks' again no please or thank yous.
We needed to check out at 6:30 in order to get out boat, and asked Tip if someone would be at reception at this time for check out. She just nodded her head and couldn't look less interested if she tried.
Wifi is also turned off around 9:30pm which is annoying.
Bungalows are nothing special, small and basic, however the bathroom was covered in lizard poo and full of Mosquitos. We got eaten alive staying there! Mosquito net isn't very effective.
Beach outside is dirty and they don't take good care of it.
Would not recommend..much better places to stay on the island.

Me and my partner stayed here as a one night stopover as we were flying from koh samui early the next morning and this was a good price not far from airport. It is right at the end of bophut beach so be warned as it is a very large area. When we arrived at 1pm we were told our bungalow was not ready and had to wait about an hour for it to become ready. Meanwhile we had some lunch (average quality and i would say overpriced) We also booked with the lady at the reception for a taxi at 4.30 the next morning and paid 500baht (which we think now is too much). THe Bungalows are clean and modern and not bad for the price we paid. However when it came to 4.20 we were at the reception where the lady was nowhere to be seen only 4 drunken thai men who were useless at helping us. It got to 10 to 5 and the taxi still hadnt arrived and no sign of the woman we asked one of the men several times who spoke english where our taxi or the woman was but he was useless and no help at all. As it approached 5 o clock (we had to be at the airport by 5.15) i warned the man i would call the police as not only was our taxi not there but th woman had taken our 500 baht from us for it. He got extremely aggressive and up in my face shouting at me complaining about tourists luckily my partner stepped in as we we scared he was going to hit me! In the end we were taken to the airport by a half asleep taxi driver. Word of warning stay here but dont expect good value food or pleasant people!!
