This property is one a kind that appreciates Japanese culture and has kept its ways of behaviour and being intact. Soul soothing & visually beautiful, this property will truly win your heart.
As soon as you enter you see lush zones of zen gardens and zen elements. The little details of patterns on the pebbles won my heart. Spacious & luxurious bedrooms with grand bathrooms and an outdoor hot spring pool to enjoy with nature! Every room opens up to a zen space, what they call as zen gardens, again a unique part of Japanese culture.
Minimalistic & modern interiors with a touch of Japanese style & designs. They even offer a complimentary kimono set ( for both male & female ) for you to try on & experience their traditional couture.
Communicating with the staff might be a challenge if you do not know Japanese language, Google translate app was a saviour for us. Otherwise staff is extremely humble & helpful.
It felt very private and quiet, the staff are very respectful and leave you to enjoy the space on your own.
The thing that impressed me the most was the huge quantity and quality of food for the kaiseki dinner and breakfast. (The most food i've had for any ryokan i've been to). I think all in all this place definitely justifies the price paid for their facilities and the food they provide. It was an experience to remember!

Food was also authentic and well prepared and there is a lot of it,
The staff are very helpful. This was our first really taste of outstanding service and quality in Japan.
The property is beautiful and service was very nice.
The staff are wonderful and showed us complete respect and courtesy during our stay.

After checking in we elected to explore the area and have some dinner. However, the ryokan is in a fairly isolated area when it comes to amenities so be prepared to walk for some time or catch a bus to get to anything interesting. There are two convenience stores within 10 minutes walk at least (see later), but the ryokan is situated on a busy road with audible traffic noise.
After enjoying a fantastic dinner at a local restaurant (see our review for Sanrouken) we returned to our room where we gave it a closer inspection, and by which I mean pulling back the covers of the bed to get in, only to notice an overabundance of hair (clearly not ours) and even a squashed bug on the sheets. Under the sheets the matress cover was also stained from use. As it was after 8:30 our calls to the front desk were answered by the security guard and after going through the challenges of communicating our request for clean sheets, the security guard was able to fetch an attendant to change the sheets. At this point we did give the room a legitimate closer inspection only to find the bathroom quite dirty with grime in corners of the counter top.
The next day we were served breakfast in our "room". Please do not let this gimmick positively influence your decision to stay here. It is disruptive to your rest and relaxation, plus there is zero flexibility in the timing (they start setting up at 7:45 a.m.). The breakfast itself was passable, but nothing special.
At this point we elected to stay in our room to rest as we had done a lot of travelling the day before. Before 10:30 we were walked in on twice, without notice, by housekeeping. This situation was frankly unforgivable and embarrassing, not to mention there was no way we could've avoided it on our part as there are no signs to hang asking for privacy. At this point we left the room for approximately 3 hours only to return and find housekeeping still in the process of cleaning and tidying. This was incredibly frustrating given how our room and privacy was invaded earlier. On top of that the sink was still not cleaned to our satisfaction and had to point out the grime to staff.
This brings me to the biggest disappointment of our stay, probably of our entire trip: the "kaseki" dinner. Firstly, I am genuinely sorry for those who have written reviews and believed this ryokan provided an authentic dining and culinary experience, as our dinner could not have been any further from that. The courses were poorly executed and timed both in presentation, quality and flavour. One course consisted of about 150ml of chicken soup that tasted like it was from a can. Practically every piece of fish served, whether sashimi or grilled, tasted bland or not fresh (odd flavours, bad texture, extremely fishy). The tempura was bland, very heavy and greasy. Then a chicken (again) hot pot was served as one course, then rice and egg were added to our leftovers and called a different course. Dessert was ice cream (probably from the nearby family mart) and a strawberry sliced in half. I feel like we basically set 32,400 yen (16,200 per person) on fire to eat here - and we could've cooked something tastier over the flames of the nearby Sanrouken anyway.
Also, remember the convenience store I mentioned earlier? Use it for your beverages as there is a hefty premium on all drinks here - not unsurprising these days but disappointing for a ryokan in this price range. Especially considering our last ryokan stay included beverage costs.
Immediately after dinner we were presented with the bill for our two night stay as we were leaving early the next morning (as mentioned earlier, zero flexibility in the breakfast time, so we had elected to forgo it). This was the straw that broke the camel's back. We expressed our displeasure at the dinner quality to our host who was very apologetic and polite. She returned shortly and explained that there was nothing she could do as it was her bosses decision. At this point we asked to speak to her boss directly and when he was available to speak to us he apologized profusely and offered a partial discount on the dinner. Given our immense displeasure at the meal and the other issues we faced during our brief stay we thought no less than comping the dinner would be acceptable, which he did acquiesce to.
For agreeing to compensate us for the dinner I will offer an extra star for this review. With that said, it is still very hard to recommend this ryokan. If you find yourself in the area I recommend that you weigh your options when it comes to price, amenities and location as there almost certainly are other accommodations which offer better value for your money than Onsenji.
We paid a fortune for a presidential suite for 2 adults+2children. They made us pay for the 2 children on top of the price of the room. So beware of that. We decided to try the "authentic "dinner which costs 16 000 yen per person. At that price we expected to have a scrumptious meal. Instead of that, we got bad food. The beef of the japanese Sukiyaki was greasy, all the dishes were tasteless. 2 unexperienced ladies took care of the service which was very approximative.
Breakfast was not good either and they come to your room to wake you up 15 min before breakfast. If you re willing to rest and sleep it s impossible as the latest to get breakfast is 8:30.
I came with my family there and we felt trapped: rigid schedules, a lot of money wasted. No family space in the ryokan other than your room and the dining room. They pretend they don t understand English when you have a request but they suddenly can speak when it s about making you pay the bill. Never again
"If you can afford the price of one of the 4 suites, it will be more comfortable with Western chairs and sofas."Read full review
