After 5 days walking around and exploring a very busy, crowded Rome it was a delight to arrive in Subiaco, approx 90 mins drive from the city. Enveloped by the countryside it is, as one should well expect, a simple place; the clue being in the name Monastero! There are several reviews rather complaining about the rooms, food & general... A group of 3 of us took a short weekend in Subiaco from Rome. We weren't expecting much, but we were disappointed even then. Our rooms were pretty Spartan, but that was ok. We went for a hike in the rain and came back needing a hot shower and some dry clothes. When I turned on the shower, water sprayed... More

Stayed 2 nights. Peaceful with gorgeous view from our room. Simply furnished but clean and comfortable. Don't expect fluffy towels and TV. Happy to say the food has improved. Outstanding red wine! breakfast was ordinary. A worthwhile stop to see the monasteries..

We stayed one night en route from Naples to Assisi, arriving by car. (It would not be very easy to reach by public transport.) When I read about it, I thought it looked a beautiful location, up in the hills and thought it would have a very special, peaceful atmosphere. The location was indeed beautiful but the peace was compromised... More
