This is a friendly, warm, inviting onsen ryokan. There are three outdoor "rotenburo", all of them beautiful, plus an indoor bath as well. The food was creative and unusual -- we had some dishes we have never seen before -- but they were all tasteful and interesting and the highest quality. Everything in the ryokan had a traditional, earthy, pleasant...

The Shima Onsen area is a great destination to decompress from the sensory overload in the energetic greater Tokyo area. Kashiwaya Ryokan is an excellent example of an intimate ryokan run by an attentive staff dedicated to promoting a classic ryokan experience. The private in-room onsen bath (aka furo) and access to private outdoor furo were significant factors in our...

The staff were all really kind and helpful from the moment we stepped into place and when checking out the next day. The place emitted a very authentic and traditional feel from the provided yukatas, the interior design, and ofcourse the baths. The food was delicious, and would highly recommend adding the beef, and (for those willing to explore) the...

Chosen because it catered to meat eating and vegan alike. The food at dinner and breakfast was superb and portions were huge - don't snack before dinner! The room design also lovely. The three private hot baths are also really nice. You can't book these but we didn't have an issue getting one 3 times in an overnight stay -...

My boyfriend and I wanted to go to a private onsen together while in Japan and so we thought the best value place would be Kashiwaya Ryoken and we were right! This was definitely the highlight of our trip! Three beautiful private onsens, wonderful staff and amazing meals! Highly, highly recommend Kashiwaya Ryoken to anyone! We definitely will come back...

We visited in January with thick snow blanketing the ground. The view from our traditional tatami room was really beautiful. Having worn backs and knees, being senoirs, we opted for a western bed, and the host very thoughtfully provided chairs as well. We had our own private bath (glorious!) and, in addition, we were able to experience the private outdoor...

I had an amazing time at Kashiwaya Ryokan. As a solo female traveler (with tattoos), I really wanted to experience a ryokan and Japanese onsen, but was concerned that I wouldn't be accepted into any onsen. After much research online, I found Kashiwaya Ryokan, and they were more than welcoming to me! They treated me with respect during the entire...

The staff was very nice and the meals were delicious and with big portions. We asked for vegetarian meals (without fish flakes), and the manager was very thoughtful, caring about the quality, nutrition, presentation, and tasting of the substitutions. They were the best meals we tried in Japan, and we felt very comfortable with their dedication. Excellent!!

My sister and I stayed here for a night in the snowing winter. Took bus from Tokyo station and arrived 3.5 hours later. It was before the usual check in 3pm, but the host kindly received us and led us to our room after a short wait. Our room was large, clean and with great view over the river. We...

I'm actually still here while I'm writing this review. The hospitality here is amazing. They provide free rental bikes and the town is an easy bike from kashiwaya ryokan. I recommend going into town because it's surreal especially when it's snowing. There's so much food and they taste so good! I recommend the extra dish of fish and beef. I...
