The hot spring resort we stayed this time was in the south of the Volcano, the Minami Aso village. “Minami” means “the south” in Japanese. Since we figured we had a car, therefore it doesn’t matter to go somewhere 20-30 minutes away from the human crowd and enjoy some peace and quiet. That’s how we discovered the resort and were so excited about it~

That’s how we found our resort. For a much cheaper price, the resort was an amazing experience. The resort is divided into the old wing and new wing. Every guest has their own individual room and a small outdoor hotspring area. Each area is thoughtfully designed and has a view of the beautiful mountain range, with cows wandering outside on the lawn.

Regarding the food, it was not top-notched as I have tasted better in the past, in another hot spring, however, it is common in Kyushu to have cuisine of horses. We visited Aso in March and to me, it was the perfect temperature to soak in the hot spring outdoor and rejuvenate...

The private bath was lovely and would have been intimate but the temperature varied quite a bit. In the evening it could have been hotter, and in the morning it was blazing hot, which turned out to be a good thing as we had no warm or hot water in the adjacent shower area in the morning. Luckily there were small buckets which we used to scoop hot water out of the bath. The room was a pretty good size and clean. It was a bit stuffy but luckily you can get fresh air by opening the sliding doors, which have insect mesh. The dinner was a bit disappointing, sort of a do it yourself BBQ and it was the first and last time we ate horse sashimi (not too odd a taste but chewy). But to be fair believe there are a number of options at different price points and we did pick the lowest priced one. The breakfast was quite good, however. Try the "onsen eggs"! More
