Opposite the beach where you can sit and watch the sunset. Sounds idyllic. The hotel is very central and great for exploring the region. The rooms are comfortable although they don't have ensuites with toilets only. Can be quite a walk to the baths and dining room after a long days walk. The food and service are excellent with no complaints.

Opposite a sandy beach, on very quiet side-road which leads to remarkably empty rocky coastline. The sandy beach is ringed with concrete in the Japanese way, but is great for a refreshing dip. Hotel is fine, neither better nor worse than would be expected for the money. We did not eat there, more is the pity, but had take-out sushi on the beach. Wifi only in the lobby, which pissed off the teenagers in a minor way.

Arafune Resort is a small sized hotel in the very quiet town of Tawara, 30 minutes by bus to the west of Katsuura. The attraction here is the beautiful coastal walk to the east of the hotel along the Arafune coast where you will see fishermen diving for lobster and abalone. The walk along a paved road right along the sea front offers great views over the spectacular coast and ends after 4km where there is a walking track up through the camellia forest looping back into town. The hotel itself is run by Ms Watanabe who takes great pride in the hotel and her guests comfort. We had a magical and huge tatami room looking out to sea with a private bathroom and toilet. Dinner was a buffet with many traditional Japanese delicacies where we were encouraged to go back for 2nd helpings. There are 2 huge baths in the onsen for the traditional soaking before the evening meal. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful, and transferred us to the Koza railway station for our train to Kansai. We stayed here at the end of a Kumano Kodo 6 day hike, you can book through the Tanabe tourist office on the website, http://www.tb-kumano.jp/en/lodging/…

I've now stayed here three times - most recently with 8 friends travelling from Australia. First, I love the coast in this region and found a great 3-4hr loop to walk along the coast and then through camellia and azalea forest. Secondly, the people here are so helpful and friendly and seem genuinely pleased to see and serve guests. The food is spectacular - lobster on a BBQ!! There is a wonderful vegetable garden out back. My lot even enjoyed the shopping in the lobby! If you have a bit of time and want a really great regional Japanese experience, I highly recommend this place. We travelled by train.

My parents and husband and I stayed one night at Arafune Resort on our way from Yunomine Onsen to Tanabe via the coast road. In nicer weather (we were there on a rainy day in March) it would definitely be worth stopping for a couple of nights. The hotel is on the beachfront, near an old fishing village that we didn't get time to explore but wish we had. We did have time to enjoy the hotel's baths, which were lovely, and to laze around in the hotel-provided yukatas. The food was plentiful and delicious, and the hotel staff seemed keen to ensure that we enjoyed our meals. The rooms were basic but clean and comfortable. They had a small bathroom with sink, shower and toilet. (We were in western-style rooms, which were the cheapest and looked over the kitchen garden and mountain at the back of the hotel.) Overall, I would recommend this hotel to people looking for a stopover point, a hotel near Kushimoto and Nachi, or a brief beachside break…

A converted town hall doesn't sound like much of a hotel, but this is a beauty! With rooms looking over a sandy beach, small harbour and fabulous rocky coast that is crawling with crayfish. Comfortable room on 3rd floor with ensuite Western style. This is called an Oceanfront Community Resort and apart from fishing, seems to be the main game in the small settlement of Kii-Tahara, not far out of Kushimoto and right at the southern tip of Kii Peninsula. Very helpful staff and we did some good shopping in the lobby! Good clean bath. Dinner was a smorgasbord (or Japanese equivalent) of good wholesome and tastey dishes probably sourcing vegetables from their large veg garden and of course the sushimi from the huge tuna and yellowtail catch along this coast.

Good: Supremely quiet. Some of the freshest seafood I have ever had: e.g live ear-abalone served on a small clay stove at the table. The ryokan style room was small, but of fair quality. Sea-side: I could see and hear the ocean from my window. Lovely small(tiny)-town charm and friendliness. Bad: Boring: small number of visitors, fewer number of exciting activities. And the OK: The baths are pretty average in size and atmosphere.
