I really enjoyed our stay at Fukuchiin. The tatami rooms were comfortable and authentic with tea always available. The grounds were fantastic, particularly the very peaceful and picturesque gardens surrounding the entire place. Everything was made of wood and had that nice creaking sound that develops over many, many years. The morning prayers and chanting was a superb experience and...

To sum up our experience: No spirituality whatsoever, worst possible service, mediocre food at best, zero heating in halls and public areas, and the dinkiest plastic-like room without any outside view. In more detail: I arrived with my partner very sick and had to stay an extra night, which gave us a chance to understand this place. Firstly, though they...

We stayed one night at this temple, and we loved it. You must pay attention and be respectful for the check in and the check out times (good!), and remember you're in a temple. What an experience!!! We booked the only room with a private bathroom, we had wifi and a spectacular view over the inner garden. We had lot...

I stayed at this beautiful ryokan before Christmas and had a lovely experience. One of the highlights was the unfaultable service provided by staff who had very good English. The rooms were tatami style and very spacious with complimentary sweets and tea on arrival. The rooms could not be locked from outside so all valuables had to be stored in...

I had originally planned to stay only two nights at Koyasan and was scrambling to book an additional night; many of the other temples I contacted were already booked as this was over Christmas, so when I learned that Koyasan had an onsen shukubo, I decided to splurge (it easily cost $60/night more than the previous temple I stayed at)....

For me staying at the Fukuchiin this was a highlight of my visit to Japan. Koya-san is a Buddhist site in Japan with many temples and gorgeous zen gardens. This ryokan had outstanding zen gardens and an onsen with natural spring waters. The room had a toilet but not a private bath, and you sleep on a tatami on the...

To be honest I found this accommodation quite uninspiring, while the gardens are beautiful the inside is rather gloomy. We had a room with a private toilet which was nice enough but I was glad I was only staying one night. The Vegetarian food (? vegan) was fairly bland & the breakfast similar to the dinner. We attended the morning...

If you are traveling in Japan for short amount of days and want to be sure to experience an onsen , futon, tatami mats, vegan meal, Buddhist prayer and stay over in koyasan, then this does all of that and you can check it off your list. That said, -vegan meal in temple- If you will be in Kyoto ,...

My overnight stay at Fukuchi-in was a really enjoyable experience. My room was quiet and comfortable, and the elaborate evening meal was amazing! But what I enjoyed most about Fukuchi-in were the beautiful, well-maintained gardens surrounding the temple. Created by the late modern master Mirei Shigemori, they are one of his last garden installments. and a lovely work of art....

This is a very friendly temple with very beautiful grounds. The buildings are surrounded by gardens (both wet gardens and dry gardens). The common rooms have very interesting collections of items (one room had rock specimens, another had traditional arms and armor). The outdoor baths are a little small (room for three maybe four people), but open all the time...
