There are so many positives to staying in this ryokan: it has recently been renovated, is immaculately clean, and well decorated; the on-site onsen is well-equipped and the perfect way to end the day on the mountain; the food in the restaurant is excellent Japanese fare (breakfast and dinner); but most of all Kono-san (the owner/manager) and his team treated... We stayed in room 203 for 2 nights and 301 for the last night (as they did not have 203 available). Overall the place did not disappoint. It was clean and homey and yet provided everything you would expect of a typical big ryokan. Breakfast was elaborate and fantastic with different dishes each day (although pls note it is a... More

This was our second stay at Kawaichiya and both times we have enjoyed great traditional rooms, Japanese breakfast, the luxury of the onsen on site, and best of all, the warm welcome and support from Kono-san and rest of staff. I think the location is great - a short walk up the hill to the ski lifts...a great amble home... More

First few nights in a tatami family room, while last few were in the other wing of the building (Twin room). Traditional Japanese tatami room with attached toilet and bath (301). This is a good size room for 4. There is lift in this building. The room has a fridge, safe, heater and TV set with Japanese channels. Modern Twin... More

This was our 2nd trip to NozawaOnsen and the 3rd accomodation we have stayed in at Nozawaonsen. We spent 3 nights at this Ryokan and there is a lot to recommend it provided you have the right room and you are OK with not having a bathroom and only using the ryokan Onsen for bathing/showering purposes. I struggled in reviewing... More

We decided on 4 nights at the Kawaichiya Ryokan after extensive research online and via reviews here in TA. The deciding factors for us were the value for money stay which included breakfast as well as the photos of the onsen in the property itself. We were definitely not disappointed in both aspects. Our family of 2 adults and 2... More

This is my second stay at this popular Ryokan. Even tho it's slighly off the Main Street, ( only 6 mins) and further from the ski area, it's what's being offered that makes this ryokan hugely popular with locals and tourists. They have their very own Onsen, which is essential after a days skiing. Breakfast is very traditional being Kaiseki... More

I stayed in Kawaichiya Ryokan for my snowboarding trip to Nozawa Onsen Ski Resort, and I really love this place. It was just renovated recently and has a well designed lobby and restaurant space which dinner and breakfast are served. Dinner was insanely amazing. A room is very traditional Japanese tatami style and very cozy little quiet place. There is... More

This ryokan is great. With a large party including kids of various ages we all enjoyed the onsens and breakfasts. Room 311 is accessed from the lobby via a lift, so no long corridor access for this room, it also has a lovely sunroom. Not that many westerners at this inn (yet). It's a bit of a walk to the... 2 adults and 2 teenagers 13 and 16 years. Stayed in Japanese style room which seemed like ends of the earth- up quite a few stairs but it was a nice walk along the way- lovely traditional ryokan- walk past the carp in the pond and the onsen- there was always something you'd see that you hadn't sent the day... “Our room (311) faced South over the quiet street and out across the snow covered roofs. You could see the olympic ski jumps across the town. There was a small and comfortable reading nook by the large windows. The main room had footons and large fluffy doonas that you packed away each day leaving a nice space to lounge around in, read and watch telly (on the floor with nice little back support seats). The sliding paper doors and timber finish gave it an authentic Japanese feel. The entry vestibule with toilet and shower coming off it was spacious and you've got to love those Japanese toilets with the warm water bidet!! Al very quite too, you couldn't hear when someone was in the shower. Awesome.”
