Detailed Reviews
We had a great experience at Double Black, I was very impressed with the team at the hotel given that the property had been shut for two years because of COVID. Restarting this type of property is never easy and the team has done a nice job.
For early 2023 the restaurant is not the same "high end" as before (understandable coming from a shut down), but the dinner options are decent comfort food. The breakfast is basic but nice with a good selection of either eggs / bacon /toast / yoghurts / cereals / espresso coffees / fruit / juices.
The staff are first rate and will do anything possible to take great care of you, with smiles all the time, happy to move you in the vans to closeby resorts or restaurants. They suggested several great local restaurants and made the reservations, we didn't have a bad meal.
Later in the evening the bar was always busy and the bartender is VERY good at making great mixed cocktails.
Staff is super friendly and the hotel is very comfortable and clean. It's a bit rough around the edges because of the 2 year shut down, so that's the only reason why I didn't give it 5 stars, but other than that, it's one of the best places to stay in Hakuba for sure.

Having discovered Double Black we returned for second meal and wished we had found the restaurant earlier during our stay in Hakuba. The dining area is comfortable and just what you are looking for after a day of skiiing. The menu offers a good range of choices, entrees, mains, sides and desserts - charcuterie through to fish, poultry, beef, venison, vegetarian. There are specials which ensure you have further choice. Every course we tried was delicious - balanced and creative combination of flavours, quality ingredients and well presented-the food here is a cut above. The staff are helpful, friendly and attentive. The international wine list is good and prices are fair. We would absolutely recommend eating here.

Had 7 great nights here. While the snow conditions weren’t great the hotel and staff were excellent. First it’s location in the Wadano Forest was wonderful, beautiful and peaceful, unlike other parts of Hakuba. Next the rooms were a decent size by Japanese standards and so never felt too squeezed. The Lounge/bar area has a nice feel and is a good place to laze around when not riding. They even have onsen you can book at certain times for private family sessions which is highly recommended after a days skiing. The one downside is neither skiing or dining options are within realistic walking distance. However the staff run you around to the local resort and to restaurants and shops so all good. Dinner at the hotel was excellent and we ate there 3 times. There are also two good bistros, one pub style the other Asian fusion, at the nearby Wadano Gateway hotel which is an easy walk so covered us for the week.
Perhaps the best thing was the staff. Matt and his crew were the best, nothing was too much of a problem for them they even offered to run some friends of ours, who were hanging out with us, back to their hotel one evening when their cab didn’t show up. 10/10 DB.

We just returned from 11 nights at Double Black which had been recommended by a friend last year. We were disappointed. Apparently there is a new owner. There are numerous young staff who are all very pleasant but this is basic accom.
The breakfast is inedible. One of our party described as prison food.Heated up baked beans, raw pikelets and raw hash browns. Dinner is not much better. Raw schnitzel. One of the young staff said there is no chef but they take in turns to cook breakfast.
This place needs to lift its game and get a chef , not young ski bums heating up food.
On another instance my daughter and her boyfriend came home at 10pm. They had been locked out of their room as keys are to be left at front desk. No key left out and no management answering emergency phone number. We ended up climbing into the office and finding the master key.

Went for the Christmas dinner (7 of us). Very disappointing. The table was not set, had to ask for the complimentary bubbles, had to ask for the wine that was ordered, mismatched & dirty glassware, no printed menu, given a piece of paper which was obviously the kitchen guide. The food served was not as per the menu, soup was spilled out of the bowls, three of the four courses were below standard. Nothing Christmassy with the settings. When we eventually got a reply to emails expressing our disappointment (3 weeks later) we were basically told there had been no others 'complaints' so it was our issue, not the venue.

This hotel has a personell that makes the whole stay worthwhile. A special thanks to One of the season workers called Kay for excellent customer service. The hotel manager on the other hand left an impression of someone being superior everyone which was not a pleasent experience.
Now for paying 300 USD per night do not expect this place to be something fancy. It gives you an impression of a simple hotel or a hostel from Europe. To their defence I dont think any hotel in Hakuba at this price range gives you the exclusive feel. What this hotel has though is 1) Excellent staff 2) Deascent breakfast 3) A dry room for your ski gears 4) An Onsen on the first floor which is a must when you need to relax after a hard day on the slopes. Overall a Good hotel but very expensive.

Remarkably beautiful boutique hotel. It has got nice and very good amenities. Rooms were clean, spacious and with comfortable bed, great for resting especially this winter season. Staff were very attentive to our needs and helpful. This hotel was designed to blend traditional Japanese with the Canadian warmth and style. We dropped to Happo-one for a great ski as it is located a minute away. Our next stop was to stroll and do snowboarding on nearby resorts.Loving this ski hotel plus it has free shuttle to the Slopes. And we did have a walk to a Hakuba Mini Train Park.Would love to come back.Recommended for everyone.

Pretty standard rooms for Japanese ski fields, but well above average service. Unfortunately the restaurant and onsen were not operating during our stay but the staff were very friendly and most helpful. Booked a restaurant for us each night and provided transport to ski fields, restaurants, onsen, shops, everything!

The bed was super comfortable. Rooms are small but neat and tidy. Nice view out onto the snow. The location is about a 10 minute ski down from the closet lift. Lots of restaurants and bars around but the in house meals are best value for money. Good wine list so its easy to relax after a day skiing.
Room is shower only but there is an onsen downstairs which is open daily

I had a great stay at Double Black. I came here with my family and had a blast. Breakfast was great and coffees were delicious. Dinner was amazing and I recommend the scotch fillet. Our bartender Abbey was always looking after us. Our kids loved the staff and everyone at Double Black was always going above and beyond. I want to thank Matt and Sehrish, as I had a medical issue they helped sort out. The reception team was the best I had ever come across in Japan. The rooms were warm and the onsens made a great way to end every day of skiing. Definitely booking next year.

Hi,
Here are some options available to you:
1) Take a bus from the Happo Bus Terminal all the way to Tokyo (Shinjuku) which takes approximately 5 hours & costs between 5,200 - 7,600 yen.
2) Take a bus from the Happo Bus Terminal to Nagano Station, take a Shinkansen to Tokyo Station & then a JR Train to Shinjuku Station.
The quickest option is the Bus, Shinkansen and JR Train combination, whilst the easiest option is the Bus directly from the Happo Bus Terminal to Shinjuku.
