It is not ski in/ski out, as claimed on some websites. The walk to the lift station is a few hundred yards uphill and can be challenging in snow and ice.
There is no housekeeping, let alone daily, again as claimed on some websites. You have to get clean towels at reception and the rooms are not cleaned or serviced during your stay. With people leaving and arriving daily the corridors are often strewn with dirty laundry, which isn't ideal in a relatively small area..
Our room, with en-suite shower/bath and toilet was small, which is fairly typical of ski resorts, but there was no storage. No cupboards or drawers, at all, just 5 coat hangers in an open space, and only half a toilet roll in the bathroom. The toilet roll is shockingly flimsy and cheap, disintegrating as soon as it comes into contact with anything remotely moist (although this may be common in Japan rather than a hotel specific issue).
There was nowhere to put wet ski gear on return from skiing. The ski storage room has no heat and does not even have heated rods to put ski boots on, so if you return with wet boots then that is what you have to look forward to in the morning.
The beds, and pillows were rock hard, like sleeping on cement. Bedding was stained.
The food is a mixture, some decent, some less so, but always let down by most of it being cold, even if you arrived dead on time for breakfast or your evening meal. The food is buffet style and is laid out in open plates, so immediately loses any heat. Surely a simple fix to put it out in catering style containers with lids?
Some positives:
The staff were all really excellent – relentlessly cheerful, helpful and hard working. They were happy to help resolve any problems and provided padded mattress toppers to help with the concrete bed issue. One staff member even took my wife to hospital after a fall, which was much appreciated and went well beyond what you would normally expect in terms of customer service. At the end of our stay we were driven to the station, again much appreciated.
The miso soup and rice got my wife's approval, and the dim sum and freshly cooked to order shrimp tempura on a couple of nights were excellent, as were the mini croissants at breakfast.
The onsen was very good, the toiletries in the bathroom were of a good quality. The beds are really spacious.
I would expect to pay a premium for a hotel so close to a lift station, and with its own onsen, but the overall quality of accommodation on offer does not justify a charge of £250 per night.

The hotel is neat and clean and well located although the walk up/down the hill on an icy night can be challenging. Without a doubt the greatest asset of this hotel are the staff. All of the usual superlatives can be used. Helpful, happy, charming, efficient and any other positive you can think of.

I booked through Japan Powder (excellent tour company to book with btw!), I was after affordable hotel with good location and they recommended hotel Chalet. The rooms a extremely clean and tidy , worn out furnishing but this didn't really matter. The bed was a bit too hard too sleep however it is advertised as japanese bed which generally means hard mattress (apparently good for u back). I received every day new hot water thermo and green tea with biscuit which was excellent. After exhausting day it was really nice to come back and find hot water for tea. The bed got done every second day but the rubbish and hot water was done daily. The breakfast was eggs with ham or sausages, yogurt, bread and small bowl of salad with tea or coffee. One morning I req Japanese breakfast which was nice (rice, fried salmon, prickles, miso soup and rice, mental note that u cannot have coffee with this option unless perhaps req one day prior. The location is excellent , next to Gorya ski lifts which connects to Hakuba 47 as well. As a nightlife there isn't anything to do however I often found myself at Aqua Alpine Hotel for dinner and wine (wine list there is amazing and prices a affordable). Highly recommended ! Overall I was really happy with the accommodation and the staff was really nice and helpful. Ski gear I was able to leave downstairs where it would be dry by the morning. I would recommend this accommodation to anyone who is looking for affordable hotel with good location.

We took a family ski vacation over the New Year holiday and stayed at this hotel. The staff members were friendly and helpful. The location is just a few minutes walk from the Hakuba Goryu Ski Area and there are several casual restaurants ski rental shops close to the hotel. There is a ski locker area in the hotel which is nice to have. Our room was clean and good for a family, but guests should be aware that the shower/bath is the common hotel onsen bath room. Our room did not have a shower and the toilet was in a space so small that we found it more comfortable to use the hallway restrooms. This was fine for us but guests should be aware of this arrangement. The breakfast was light but fine for us. I would stay here again although not at peak season as the pricing was quite high.

We arranged our accommodation through Booking.com after finding Abest on the internet.
Looked good. But soon discovered they had nobody on the phones that could speak English. Arranging the visit, getting directions, trying to get a pick up from the bus stop, calling for assistance from the train station and getting directions from the hotel was all impossible.
We were a family of 5. 2 teenagers and a 5 year old.
When we arrived we found the front stairs were covered in snow. We had to dig our way up the stairs. Nobody around to assist or receive us.
Eventually the hotel manager appeared but could speak no English. We resorted to using google interpreter on his computer.
He could tell us very little about access the slopes, the ski schools and equipment. We soon realized that he could offer no support and that there never be any.
We didn’t check in but instead found better accommodation where we felt we could get the support we needed

Nice location, close to the chair lifts. The staff are friendly and helpful. The beds are comfortable but the toilets are small. The best thing about this hotel is that it has their own onsen and you can go down as many times as you want, definitely a plus after a full day of skiing.

Being first time skiers and first time in Hakuba, we were very grateful for "Japan Powder" who recommended this hotel. Literally 5 minute walk up a gentle hill to reach base station at Hakuba Goryu ski resort (Escal Plaza) and straight onto lifts or catch gondola for amazing views of Hakuba valley. There is shuttle bus to Iimori as well as Hakuba 47, although finding shuttle bus to Hakuba or Kamishiro train station or Hakuba Goryu bus stop proved unsuccessful. Hakuba Goryu doesn't have much of a nightlife that the other resorts may have, but we appreciated the quiet ambience. The family suite on 4th floor slept 5 and was a double room and amazingly spacious for Japanese standards. Great indoor onsen and spa; unfortunately outdoor onsen was closed because of excessive snow but looked terrific. Staff were very friendly and helpful. The unexpected plus was that we did not know that the tariff (listed on Booking.com as including "half-board" whatever that means) included breakfast and dinner (only pay for drinks), and was of extremely high quality. Breakfast was smorgasbord,Western-style or Japanese-style depending on the day. Evening meal was exceptional, with delicate multi-course Japanese cuisine not out of place from fine dining options. The chef personally accommodated for our daughter with sesame allergy, and we felt at times that we had a personal chef at our call ! We could not believe the quality of the dinner meals in particular, and why more people weren't in the restaurant especially as evening meal options in Hakuba Goryu itself seemed fairly limited. Don't bother going out elsewhere for dinner whilst staying here! There was also daily "happy hour" where drinks (coffee; tea; wine) and fruit were free to guests.

We had a great week staying at Hotel Abest. It is a mid-sized family-run hotel at the top of Wadano. The rooms were quite spacious and comfortable. Bathrooms were pretty small, through. The highlight was the Onsen which was a great way to relax after a day skiing. It was great to sit there in the outdoor and indoor hot tubs looking out onto the snow.
The staff were always friendly and happy. Breakfast was a hearty continental spread. Yuika’s friendly laugh was a highlight at breakfast time!
The hotel ran a morning and afternoon minivan shuttle to the ski field at Happo-One about 2 mins drive away - or about 7 mins if you want to walk. Also, the shuttle to Hakuba 47 resort leaves from their driveway, too.
Highly recommended. Thanks.

This hotel is the best location in Hakuba region. It is close to Ski resort and shopping area. The staff are friendly helpful and nice food. Although they speak little english but they tried their best to serve their guests with their honest hospitality. This is the best family hotel in Hakuba. There is ski locker too and sauna.

Stayed here last week 1/1/2013 and had an amazing experience. The people are very welcoming, the chalet is 5min walk to the chair lifts on hakuba goryu. The owners son will serve you each morning for breakfast and is a really accommodating, he is very happy to strike up a conversation and we often found we could speak to him about anything. The Japanese breakfast is home cooked from family recipes, the whole hotel is brilliant. It has a really nice onsen down stairs, and very comfortable rooms.
