The Bears Den Mountain Lodge was purpose built to provide quality Western style accommodation in 2007. We continue to work hard at making the Den a wonderful and welcoming place for guests to find their mountain bliss. All guest rooms have a large en-suite with separate full size shower, Sealy Posturepedic King size beds and 5-Star linen. Rooms are rented out individually or joined in privacy for families or groups of travellers. We are situated in beautiful Goryu Village. A short stroll to restaurants and bars in the Village and only 300 Meters from Goryu/Hakuba 47 Ski Resort, take the forest trail at the end of the day to ski–in to our front door. Hakuba offers endless terrain of jagged peaks, epic amounts of snow, plenty of sunny days, long seasons and few people! We hope we can share our local knowledge, good times, and your best mountain story ever. Everyone is welcome!

There are so many wonderful things to say about our stay at Bears Den - I don’t know how I will fit them all in one review!

From the moment we arrived at Bears Den, it felt like home. Lesley, the amazing owner and host was so welcoming and friendly and made us feel right at home immediately. We were traveling with our daughter who was only 7mths at the time and Lesley was so accommodating of our needs - nothing was too much hassle. She even brought to my room, some of her own home cooked meal (an amazing veggie curry!) when I was stuck in there with my wakeful baby and had missed dinner one night! She creates such a unique environment at her lodge where everyone feels like family and we met some lovely people while we were there.

The Den is in an excellent location, walking distance to one of the slopes. The lodge itself is immaculately presented. Everything is fresh and clean and so very comfortable. The rooms are beautiful, with a lovely private bathroom and the lodge has everything you need, including lots of space upstairs to relax, a laundry, drying room and outdoor onsen. Lesley cooks a really yummy breakfast each morning and she is always happy to drive guests to the slopes as well as call for dinner reservations etc. She really goes above and beyond.

I really can’t stress how amazing our experience at the Bears Den was - I recommend it to all of our friends. We would have loved to stay there again this year, however it was already fully booked due to the busy Chinese New Year :( Lesley and I keep in touch from time to time and she’s still the warmest, friendliest person I remember her to be. Do yourself a favour and stay at Bears Den next time you’re in Hakuba! You will not be disappointed!

This was our second trip to Hakuba, and while the snow and boarding are fantastic, the main reason we returned was to stay at Bears Den. Lesley is an amazing host and the lodge is the perfect place to unwind after a day on the slopes. Tucked down a dead-end street and surrounded by forest it's a quiet and magical place when it's snowing. There's a little track out the back that you can ski/board down from the bottom if Goryu as well, so it's virtually ski-in. The upstairs open plan area is great for relaxing by the fireplace with a Sapporo or a sake and is also where Lesley serves her fabulous breakfasts (included in the accommodation charge). Lesley is also more than happy to drop guests at the ski lift, bus stop, etc., book dinner for you, arrange the Black Cat luggage transfer and I could go on. We will be back again.

We stayed at the Bear’s Den on a family ski trip to Hakuba and we loved it. Lesley, the lodge owner and manager, was really welcoming and incredibly helpful; she picked us up from the local train station, booked local restaurants, arranged ski passes, and cooked us breakfast every morning (including a special one-off request of pancakes for the kids).

The lodge is warm, inviting and really well kept. The layout strikes a nice balance between private and communal areas, so you can socialise with the other guests while at the same time as enjoying your own personal space. The location is excellent; only a short walk to the Goryu/Hakuba 47 Ski Resorts as well as a number of local restaurants.

We really enjoyed our stay and would definitely recommend staying at the Bear’s Den if you plan on visiting Hakuba.

We stayed here during the ski season, great location close to the slopes and although there is no onsen at the lodge there are plenty of onsens closeby. The rooms were very clean and roomy and the room was made up each day by the time we got back in the afternoon. There is a bar upstairs where you can hangout and have a drink and enjoy the wonderful views over the mountains. Every morning you will get breakfast including eggs and toast if you want it or cereal with coffee. After you will be taken to the ski lifts and the hosts had information regarding rental gear, restaurants nearby etc.

On the downside, note that dinner was not served everyday contrary to what we understood from the website. On a couple of nights our host said he would be going out that night so there would be no dinner. This was not a big deal since there are restaurants within 10-15 min walk away but a little annoying when you find out last minute you need to fend for yourself. However, on a couple of nights when the our host went out for dinner he also closed the bar, switched off all but one of the lights. So as it was only 7pm we just finished up our glasses of wine and wondered down to the bar down the road. This didn't ruin our stay but we really appreciate the hospitality we received at other Japanese hotels in the area. The service here just isn't up to par.

Still, would recommend hakuba to anyone as you are almost guaranteed some good snowfall. However if visiting Japan for the first time, would recommend staying at a Japanese b&b style minshuku or ryokan for some Japanese hospitality. For over AUD 300 per night we didn't think the bears den was value for money.

Very nice cosy place with great service and amenities run by lovely Perth lady.
Nice brekky and lovely family like atmosphere where you meet new people apre' ski by the fire place after a chill in the onsen.
This place, a stone throw away from the ski fields with great slopes between Hakuba Goryu and Happo One. Night life is limited but plenty enough- absolutely loved the place and people around.
A must go destination, don't delay, book now! 😉 👍👍👍👍👍

If you’re coming to Hakuba, you won’t beat the Bears Den for location, hospitality and homeliness! Whether you’re a couple, family of group of families the Bears Den more than comfortably accommodates up to 13 and is about the best Western style accomodation you’ll find on any of the Hakuba slopes. Located just a short stroll to the Goryu slopes, not that it matters as Leslie, your amazing hostess, who nothing is too much trouble for, will drop you to the village of your choice each day. The cooked breakfasts each morning, being able to ski in almost to the front door each day, the fireplace and the magic hot tub at the end of each day all made for the perfect Japan ski holiday for our family. Look no further than the Bears Den!

Bears Den is an exceptional place. Lesley has the ability to create a home away from home. From the cooked breakfasts, the hot tub out the back, the value for money size of the rooms, the quality beds and the great atmosphere, Bears Den is the place to be. It is such good value for the quality of everything that is provided.

It's location is great to the ski slopes. Lesley will drop you off and you can ski right back to the door or it is a easy walk. There are lots of great places to eat within easy walking distance. Not to be missed is the onsen within walking distance to ease your tired bones.

We loved it so much we have already booked for next Feb 2020.

For many years I have stayed at Bears Den, I think it will be 9 next Feb 2020 ! Staying on my own, with Family or a group of Melbourne friends - each time Lesley has provided a special Ski holiday in an ideal location in Goryu. I last reviewed in 2015 and cannot wait until next yr when our group will book out the lodge for the week. The property is expertly maintained in a superb condition - everything works with a high quality fit out.
All you require is within easy walking distance with excellent local cuisine, onsen's and skiing of course ! The central dining room lounge area with it famous Jimmy Possum Aussie table and open fire are a buzz after a hard day on the slopes with drinks, nibbles and laughter. But the peace and the serenity of Bears Den location are never overlooked, so plenty of chill time with a book and glass of red.
Thank you Lesley for so many fantastic memories. See you Feb 2020.

Bears den is our home away from home. The accommodation is always immaculately clean, the beds are soooo comfortable and with great quality linen! We love the hot tub, and the way Lesley creates a family atmosphere with all guests staying at the Den together. We have met some great people and remain friends with many from all over Australia and the world! We will always return to bears den

It's hard to be any more glowing about Bears Den. Even before you've arrived Lesley will have been in touch to give you tips, arrange pick-up, etc.

The lodge is stunning - built out of dark wood, with a fantastic upstairs living and dining area, with obligatory fire.

Rooms are small but very comfortable and there's an outdoor hot tub to soak in after a hard day on the slopes.

The lodge is walking distance to the bottom lift station at Goryu, but you won't have to walk as Lesley or one of her friendly staff will usually drive you anywhere you need to go. In the afternoon, provided there's enough snow (and there was heaps when we were there and that was only at New Year), you can ski/board down a little trail that comes out the back of the lodge.

A hearty cooked breakfast is provided every day, and we had a local chef come in twice during our stay to cook us dinner (additional cost). On other nights, Lesley would recommend and book one of the many great local eating spots. The crew also took us to an amazing light show in the nearby forest and then to a sushi train restaurant one night.

The fridge is always stacked full of Japanese beers, and an honesty system operates for your tab. Lesley also orders in some excellent WA wines, which are available to buy.

There are only about 5 guest bedrooms in the lodge, so it always feels intimate and you get to know the other guests really well. If you are an Aussie, especially one from WA, you will feel right at home here. You will hear Triple J playing upstairs most of the time!

Bears Den would be an amazing place to stay in its own right; throw in the superb snow, Japanese food and hospitality and it becomes a highly memorable holiday. Cannot recommend highly enough.
