The guesthouse is about 20 minutes walk from heritage area. The house is clean and warm enough. The bed is comfortable. The owner is friendly and able to communicate with English speaking guest. There is a restaurant and convenience store nearby. I enjoyed my stay in Ant Hut.

Ant Hut is (or at least, was) the only hostel around, which is very useful, since hotels and guesthouses are very expensive. It’s a simple home, and I stayed in the 6 bed dorm. They don’t have heating, but the bed and blankets were incredibly comfy. I didn’t feel cold at all. They offer also pick up transportation from the bus station. Before going, buy some food, since there is nothing to be eaten there.

The guesthouse is located is close enough to the historical village of Shirakawago and Gokayama if you want a budget guesthouse comparing to those within the historical village. It is sufficient with a bed and bathroom with very much a youth hostel set up. The facilities are clean and the owners and the keeper are very nice.

Despite the small space, it has a rather well-thought-out layout. Each level of bunk beds is high enough for sitting up right comfortably, with a lot of space for personal storage, and equipped with a reading lamp and a power socket. The small space might present a problem when the guesthouse is rather full. There were only a few guests when we were there so the space (lack of) wasn't an issue. However, the host was elusive. Met him when we arrived, settled our stay, gave us the info of a walking tour, and then saw him again for a short while when he came back to set the table for the following morning. He didn't stay there. It would have been very helpful if he had told us where to find food. When we arrived, it was around lunch time. After settling in, we went out almost 2pm and realised most of the eateries were closed. Still managed to find a ramen restaurant for lunch before it closed. That wasn't all. Dinner was even more challenging -- even that ramen restaurant was closed! While we were prepared to have our dinner in the convenient store, a local directed us to a sake bar that served simple but good food. I guess any food tasted good in such situation.

This guest house does not look much from the outside and its is very small just 12 beds in 2 rooms but it is very friendly and sociable. The dorms are warm and comfortable, with curtains and a large space for your luggage. The lounge/kitchen area is very sociable and a great place to meet other travellers. It is about 20 minutes walk from the bus stop, the tourist information there can give you a map with the guest house location. Not many places to eat at night so eat early or bring food. Very friendly staff and clean. There are also bikes for rent.

Although the rooms are very small and many bunks are crowded in, it works well. Each bunk has curtains and the whole place is very clean and well organised. The owner is friendly and helpful. It took 20 minutes to walk from the bus station and it was easy to fund

The owner of this guesthouse and the staff are so sweet, helpful, welcoming and warm. I spent a night here and had a really good time. This place is small and home like but gets pretty social if one wants it to be. They close the common are by 11 but nevertheless, it was an amazing experience staying at this guesthouse.

Without any information they lock the door from outside during the night! No sign for these. I felt like in jail when I realized these. In case of Fire earthquake all people are lockt in. Try to stay somewhere else.

The dorm is located away from the main attraction of the village and probably not walkable. We were picked up by the host and it was 10 min drive. The hostel is nice and clean, and we were given clear instructions about the use of the place, The beds are large; however there were no lockers. The closest restaurant was 10-15 min walk from the hostel. One big drawback is that the hostel has one bathroom for approx 10 beds, so it could get busy in the morning. The only reason I stayed in the place as there was no other accommodation left in the main village. I would stay here only if I do not find accommodation in the main village.

We contacted this place via Airbnb and stayed one night. The owner is a Sri Lankan who is married to a Japanese wife and is living next to this guest house. The location is far from the center of Shirakawa-go and here is tips for you to get to this place easily. 1) Location/Transporation. When you book/ride a bus to Shirakawa-go from Takayama city or from Toyama/Kanazawa, get off at the bus stop called "Hatogaya", two stops before Shirakawa-go bus stop or the next stop called "Ogimachi". If you are not sure, tell the driver that you want to get off at Shirakawa-go Yakuba (Town office). Ant Hut is 10m from "Hatogaya" bus stop. IF you get off at Shirakawa-go Bus Stop, call Ant Hut to see if they can come pick you up because the distance is about 2.6km and with a suitcase, it will take you 30min. Make sure to check the distance and what you carry before making a reservation at Ant Hut. We walked to the observatory/view point from Ant Hut and by fast speed walk, it took us 20min and by normal speed it took 30min each way...just one single round trip between this guest house and center area is doable, but multiple trips make you tired. 2) About the heater. As other wrote, we visited in the middle of February and only one big heater in the living/kitchen shared space was provided. Each dormitory doesn't have a heater/air conditioner and the owner shut off the heater at 11pm. The bedding wasn't too bad and we could sleep well, but if you are from warm countries, you may have hard time sleeping. There are two hot-water bottles (bag)/foot warmer called "Yutanpo (湯たんぽ)in a red cotton bag near the washing machine that you can use in the bed. When you make a hot water, use a white instantaneous kettle. The Infrared Heater use is not recommended. We didn't use a shower as we were going to a hot spring spa the next day, but the hot water at the sink located at the entrance door worked well. 3) Kitchen/Stores/Restaurant. A refrigerator is available for guest's use, but no other complimentary was not provided such as instant coffee, green tea, green tea bags, suger, salt and pepper etc. The breakfast was included and two small bread with a couple of kinds of jam and coffee. If you are hungry and get something to eat or drink, there is a small local store in front of Hatogaya bus stop which opens until 8pm (I believe) and Daily convenience store which opens until 11pm (1km away). We went to a restaurant called TENKARA, where you can enjoy Hida Beef Yakiniku. The price range were 500yen-3000yen. They have an English menu. It was pretty good. 3) Amenities. The towel is rented out or sold for 300yen each and is only one size (regular face towel: 30cmx70cm) a bath towel is not available. I think it is pricey as at most guest houses a towel fee for this sizel is 50yen-100yen. The shampoo, conditioner, shower gel are available. About the bedding. The comforter, fleece blanket and a fluffy sheet were provided, there is no fitted sheet, flat sheet or comforter cover were NOT available which were very different from regular guest houses... Not sure if Wifi was available or not as we had our own pocket wifi. 4) The owners. The owner spoke Japanese and English fluently and no problem communicating with him. His parents in law also stopped by and greeted the guests (They only speak Japanese). In the morning before we finished the breakfast they offered a ride to Shirakawa-go Bus Stop, but we were not ready nor had we finished the breakfast, we had to declined the offer and walked to the center part of Shirakawa-go. They kind enough to deliver our suitcases to the Shirakawa-go bus stop right according to our bus departure time. They don't speak English, but try to use Google translation and ask them to help you deliver your luggage as again, the distance from Ant Hut to Shirakawa-go Bus stop is 2.6km and you don't want to carry them around while you walk around those beautiful old houses. Lastly, I would recommend that you choose other guest houses due to its location, incompleteness of the facility/kitchen/amenities. The owner and his parents in law were kind and helpful.
