The house is not far from Onsen Hotel. Room is big enough for 4 people. Dinner is a good test , love it. Futon is fine, comfort and warm make me sleep well. I afraid to fire so didn't open heater all night but can sleep. Breakfast is good too. So I recommend for this hostel .

To be honest, Gensaku isn't our first choice for a night's stay in a Gassho-style house. But it turns out not bad. The food was great and the host (the middle-aged lady and the old lady) were both friendly. I can really feel their hardship with just the two of them running the whole place and cooking every course from scratch. But please note the followings: - The shared bathroom is open till 9 pm only and you can't take a shower in the morning. - Soundproofing is literally non-existent in these houses, meaning you'd hear your neighbour snore and the host family walking around upstairs. If you're a light sleeper, bring earplugs. - Our room is right by a road with motor traffic. It's quiet at night, but we were waken by traffic noises in the morning at around 5:30 am... - If you want to know more about the history of the house and their way of life, you'll be disappointed. The hosts were so busy and worn out that they have no intention to talk to us except the bare minimum required... (I do speak some Japanese.) But I don't think it only happens exclusively in Gensaku. I suppose most Gassho minshuku are under-staffed.

Booked Gensaku via a local tour agent and did not regret doing a one night stay. One can thoroughly enjoy the quietness and beauty of the town once all the noisy tourists left after 4.30pm. Finally able to pose at each of the snow made structure without queueing and even did my first snow slide down a slope !! The package include dinner and breakfast and sleeping in authentic jap style mattress. Toilets and showering is shared and can only shower between 4.30pm to 9pm. No morning shower!! Only cash payment.

A very old but neat home with a homey friendly service. Delicious dinner was made of local ingredients that they gathered in the area and rice that they grew in their filed. Room is simple but comfortable when you consider it is centuries old house. Staying at inns allows you to see the real Shirakawa village from the romantic evening to the magical morning without being bothered by bus loads of day trippers that you see during the day.

Stay here for 1 night and just way too excited for this trip! Getting a chance to reserve thru Shirakawa-go tourist association is a cutting edge! Me and my mum did have a good experience here. The house was renovated a bit, get a good bath area and washroom. Dinner and breakfast were served at the dining room. Although the portion is not too big, we do cherish all the food the old lady prepared for us. If I need to point one bad thing, our neighbour is quite noisy with their kids screaming and yelling at night, that took some time to calm down and sleep. Overall highly recommend travellers to stay overnight to experience more if you do not have a busy schedule.

Stayed here with my wife in June 2016. Very friendly hosts who can communicate in basic English. Facilities in the hut were as expected and adequate for our needs. It's located in the main area so walking to nearby shops and view points was easy. The dinner and breakfast were awesome! Plenty of variety and every dish was tasty. Would love to come back again.
